United going for goals in tricky trip to FC Porto

Sir Alex Ferguson has stressed the importance of scoring in away legs as Manchester United prepare for their Champions League tie at FC Porto.

United have been eliminated in the knockout stages of European football´s premier club competition twice in the last six years due to their inability to keep clean sheets at Old Trafford having secured a goalless draw on their travels.

And ahead of the last-16 first leg tie at Porto´s new Estadio de Dragao, Ferguson has reiterated that his team will be looking for goals.

" It´s important that we try to score," said the United boss.

" We have had one or two 0-0s in the past and it´s not a comfortable situation to be in.

" You never feel as though you have achieved a result that makes you happy.

" That´s why our main job will be to try and score and hope that gets us a result."

Ferguson will become the first man to manage a team in 100 Champions League games in the clash in northern Portugal.

However, his chances of celebrating victory have lessened due to defensive problems, with Rio Ferdinand suspended and Mikael Silvestre out injured.

" No-one likes to lose their best players," added Ferguson.

" But we know it´s part of the modern game, that´s why we have strong squads.

" We have very good players who will fill in, so we will cope."

Ferguson will have Louis Saha available to make his European debut for United, and he will hope the Frenchman is up for the challenge of inflicting defeat on a team who have won 16 of their 17 home games in all competitions this term. Only Real Madrid have triumphed at Porto so far this season and Ferguson knows it will be tough.

" The tournament accelerates when it gets to the knockout stage," he said.

" I first came to Porto with Aberdeen in 1984 and they have been winning championships ever since.

" We beat them in the quarter-finals seven years ago but they have a stronger side now than they had then.

" This one is more aggressive and has a far higher workrate, so we have to respect them.

" They are an attacking side and they will want to win their home game, so we expect them to come at us at some point."

Today´s newspapers, tomorrow´s fish and chip paper... in this feature, we round up the United stories in England´s famously reusable tabloids...

O´Shea gets the axe
Alex Ferguson is set to axe John O’Shea as he reshuffles his creaky defence to face Porto. The Manchester United boss may recall Wes Brown to play alongside Gary Neville at the centre of defence in their crunch Champions League clash tonight. In another drastic change to his line-up Phil Neville will be moved back from midfield to right-back with Quinton Fortune staying at left-back.

United on all-out attack
Alex Ferguson will go for all-out attack in Porto. With the defence in disarray, the Manchester United boss has decided to try to simply outscore the opposition in tonight’s Champions League tie. He will ditch the normal cautious European approach and play Louis Saha to give him a double-barrelled frontline. And Ferguson believes that, even if they do leak goals, Saha and Van Nistelrooy can blow Porto away in their second round first-leg clash. Ferguson said: “Louis has done well for us and it is a case of making my mind up which is the best way to play him against Porto. He has shown a lot of great things.

We´ll be back
Ruud van Nistelrooy last night warned title rivals Arsenal that Manchester United are not going to give up their Premiership crown without a fight. And the Dutchman reminded the rest of Europe that United are at their best when faced with adversity. " One of the greatest strengths of our team is our ability to bounce back from results that haven´t gone our way," said Van Nistelrooy. " We know what we have to do and we have the players in our squad to do it."

Fergie puts up weak defence for his stars
Sir Alex Ferguson´s grim mood upon arrival here yesterday said everything about the mounting problems the Manchester United boss is facing both in the Premiership and Europe. " I´m not getting into that," was the United boss´s curt reply to questions on his side´s current malaise and why he failed to add another defender to his squad during the January transfer window. Yet Fergie´s irritation and refusal to answer key questions over why United have suddenly found themselves struggling at a time when they usually step up a gear served to underline the current crisis of confidence at Old Trafford.

Scholes to pay the cost
Porto midfielder Costinha insists he will snuff out Manchester United´s Paul Scholes in tonight´s Champions League clash - just as he did when Portugal faced England last week. Costinha marked Scholes out of the game in last week´s friendly and he´s ready for a repeat performance. He said: " I stopped Scholes and I can do it again. " Scholes is a very good player but I did what the Portugal coach ( Luis Felipe) Scolari told me to do - I closed down his space and will look to do the same again with Porto.

Hair we go with Rio´s ban appeal
Rio Ferdinand may give a hair sample when the FA sit in mid-March to hear the appeal against his eight-month ban. But the FA claim the hair test, which can reveal if someone has taken drugs in the last six months, is irrelevant because the Manchester United player has not been accused of taking drugs but of failing to attend the test.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Fulham bliss for sick Chris
An almighty rollicking from Chris Coleman provided the spark for Fulham to set up a quarter-final showdown with Manchester United. Even though Coleman was laid up in bed last night, assistant Steve Kean revealed how the manager´s stern words following defeat at Wolves on Saturday had breathed new life into the side. After goals from Brian McBride, Barry Hayles and Luis Boa Morte clinched victory, Kean said: " The boys were told in no uncertain terms that their performances of late had not been up to the required standards. We were quite strong with them and forced them to train for longer than normal and you saw the rewards of that tonight."

" Glazer buys more Man Utd shares"

Will Malcolm Glazer launch a bid for the club?
Sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer has bought more shares in football club Manchester United, raising his stake to 16.69%.
A statement to the London Stock Exchange said the 75-year-old bought one million shares at 265 pence each, increasing his holding from 16.31%.

Irish duo John Magnier and JP McManus have a stake of 28.9% in the English champions, whose shares have risen recently amid takeover talk.

Manchester United shares were trading up 1.1% at 266p on Wednesday morning.

Last week City watchdog The Takeover Panel said it would be keeping a close eye on trading in Manchester United shares ahead of a possible takeover bid.

The statement followed comments by US entrepreneur Mr Glazer, owner of former Super Bowl champions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who said he may make a bid for United.

The club was officially placed in an " offer period", which will last until Mr Glazer either makes or bid or decides against making an offer.

During this offer period Manchester United will have to inform its shareholders of new developments, and there are tighter rules on the disclosure of dealings by major shareholders

=>A la limite je préfére que ce soit Glazer plutôt que McManus et son acolyte ^^

Pas mal d´absents à Porto...

Porto will miss the striking power of Derlei, who is probably out for the rest of the season, and Cesar Peixoto and Marco Ferreira are also injured.

Sergio Conceicao and Maciel Cunha are both ineligible, providing chances for Carlos Alberto and Edgaras Jankauskas, and Costinha is suspended.

Bonne nouvelle, Silvestre bientôt de retour...

=>Mikael Silvestre could be set for a quicker return than anticipated, after responding positively to treatment on the ankle injury he sustained in Manchester United´s draw against Leeds.

Reliable sources in France state that the original suggestion that Silvestre would be missing for three weeks is now looking pessimistic.

In fact, the France international could return in as little as ten days, after an MRI scan revealed no damage to his ligaments or bone in the joint.
