" Robben points the finger"

PSV Eindhoven striker Arjen Robben has blamed both clubs for failing to land a move to Manchester United during the transfer window.
The 20-year-old´s father and agent, Hans Robben, said his son " would have loved" a move.

He said: " I´m surprised both clubs couldn´t come to an agreement.

" I don´t know if PSV asked too much or if United simply didn´t offer enough. What I do know is that the difference was too big."

Manchester United reportedly offered £4.8million for Robben, some way short of PSV´s £10.3m valuation.

PSV president Harry van Raaij accused United of underhand dealing after they invited Robben for a tour of Old Trafford and their training complex, although van Raaij admitted United had made a formal declaration of their interest.

Robben senior told the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper: " When we spoke to Manchester United earlier this year I was under the impression they wanted Arjen very much. I don´t know if they are playing a game.

" It is a shame because Arjen would have loved to join Manchester United."

Robben moved to PSV in 2001 from FC Groningen for almost £3.4million and is contracted with the current Eredivisie champions until 2007

Irish tycoons lift Man Utd stake

Irish businessmen John Magnier and JP McManus have bought a further tranche of shares in Manchester United football club, the BBC understands.
They have acquired a 4% stake from Dutch media tycoon John de Mol.

The deal would mean that the two´s investment company, Cubic Expression, would hold more than 29% of the shares in the English Premiership club.

But it would still be less than the 29.9% threshold above which an offer to buy out the club would have to be made.

BBC business editor Jeff Randall said: " It is my understanding from my City sources that the Irish investors have bought a very sizeable stake in Manchester United, taking their total ownership up to about 29%."

This is as near as you can get to parking your tanks on somebody´s lawn

" It has not yet been confirmed by those Irish Investors, but my sources on this are very sure that this is what has happened."

He said: " There has been a large volume of share trading in Manchester United."

He added: " If this is correct, and I must emphasise that I´ve not yet had this confirmed by the Irish investors, this will take their shareholding up to more than 29%, and that´s the maximum any investor can hold in any publicly quoted company without making a full bid for that company."

Steve Bruce has admitted he is still hoping to bring Nicky Butt to Birmingham City before the start of next season.

The Birmingham City boss had a £5.5m offer for the England midfielder accepted by United during the January transfer window.

However, Butt decided to delay his decision on whether to move to St. Andrews until the end of the current campaign.

Bruce said: " It is not dead and we will re-visit the situation again in the summer. We will ask the question again and see what happens. Unfortunately, these transfer windows push you into a corner and I felt that Nick was pushed into corner.

" He wanted more time which you can understand. He has been at that club since he was a kid. The longer it went towards the end of the window the worse it got for us," he added.

Butt handed in a transfer request last month following a lack of first team starts this season.
