" Solskjaer ready for comeback"

Solskjaer has not played since September
Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to make his return from a long-standing knee injury.
The Norwegian international has not played for United since undergoing an operation in September and had looked set to miss the entire season.

But the 30-year-old has been in training for the last fortnight and should play for United´s reserves against Aston Villa on 5 February.

" Ole is doing fine," manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News.

" But I don´t want to build him up for playing again after so long out and then find the pitch is too hard or risk his return.

" He will get a game when we play Aston Villa at home. He will definitely be okay by then."

Solskjaer has not played for United since September, missing 25 matches in the process.

He faces some tough competition for a place in the first team, following the capture of Louis Saha from Fulham.

Magnier turns up the heat
Manchester United were plunged into fresh turmoil last night when John Magnier demanded enquiries into 13 transfers. Sir Alex Ferguson´s arch-enemy is desperate to uncover details of " astonishing fees" the club pays out to agents. Major shareholders Magnier and JP McManus have stepped up their campaign against the United boss by identifying the individual deals they want scrutinised. They include the British record £29million transfer of Rio Ferdinand, the £28m signing of Juan Sebastian Veron, Diego Forlan´s £7m move and the £12.24m deal for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Irish duo, in an amazing 99-point letter to the Old Trafford club, are also demanding details about the transfers of keeper Massimo Taibi and French international defender Laurent Blanc dating back almost four years.

Forget the horse, this hostile act is way beyond a personal quarrel
There can be no mistaking the intention of John Magnier and JP McManus in submitting their exhaustive list of questions to the board of Manchester United. They are engaged in a hostile act which reaches far beyond any personal quarrel they may have with Alex Ferguson over a racehorse. In the world of high finance, raising such fundamental issue about company and accounting practices would almost certainly be seen as a prelude to kicking out the existing board, or a full-scale takeover.
Alex Brummer, Daily Mail

They can´t nobble Fergie
Horseracing millionaire John Magnier is not only taking on Sir Alex Ferguson - but half the planet as well. Manchester United are without doubt the biggest club in the world and have the largest fan base, which stretches from Boston to Beijing. And who is the idol of most of those supporters? Sir Alex Ferguson. Magnier and his associate JP McManus will be the target of every United fan who believes they are using their majority ownership of the champions to stick the knife into Fergie.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Ruud fan Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy has followed Alex Ferguson in committing himself to Manchester United — just as SunSport predicted. The Dutch master blaster said: “I am delighted to commit my future to the club. I have grown very fond of Manchester United — the fans are amazing.” On Wednesday we revealed boss Ferguson would sign that day and he did. Yesterday we said Dutch master blaster Van Nistelrooy had told the directors he wanted to put pen to paper on his new deal, too. And the 27-year-old strike ace did that yesterday afternoon as he became the highest-paid player at Old Trafford alongside skipper Roy Keane. His five-year contract, backdated to the start of this season, is worth £23.5million — that’s £90,000 a week.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Saha got it wrong
James Beattie has slammed Louis Saha for the way he forced Fulham to sell him to Manchester United. Saha makes his debut against Beattie’s Southampton at Old Trafford tomorrow after throwing a string of high-profile tantrums to engineer a £12.8million transfer. But Beattie said: “I wouldn’t say what he said. You might feel like that but there are certain things you don’t say publicly. Saha’s a very good player and he scored a couple of goals against us for Fulham last month. But there’s always a danger, wherever you move, that you might not get a place in the first team.”
Dave Kidd, The Sun

I´m no diver
Cristiano Ronaldo last night hit back at his growing army of critics and insisted: " I´m no diver or cheat." Manchester United´s gifted teenage midfielder has earned a reputation for diving since his £12.24million move from Sporting Lisbon last summer. But the 18-year-old wonder-kid claims he does not con referees. " I don´t agree," said Ronaldo, when asked about the diving accusations. " They are other people´s opinions. I´m no diver or cheat. If I fall over, it´s because I always get a slight push. I have the tricks to beat players in England and I won´t change my game or style."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

One day I´ll boss United
My lasting memory of Bryan Robson will always be him as Captain Marvel. Leading England and Manchester United from the front with a swashbuckling attitude that became his hallmark. Robson´s eyes are still determined and the attitude just as strong. " I´d like to think that one day I would manage Manchester United," he says without even the faintest hint of a smile. No, he´s deadly serious, because that has always been the Robson way. " I want to be in the Premiership with a big club, one with a lot of tradition. That is my aim before I finish my career."

New Contract Signed
”We’ve had a few derailments along the way. The Rio Ferdinand situation meant that Maurice Watkins was very busy. But, also, the important thing was the details of the contract. When Peter [Kenyon] first raised the subject in America, the thing that concerned me most was if we announce a one-contract, people would wonder if that was my retirement date. I wanted to get rid of that. The rolling contract was the best way to do that.

Fergie´s Future
" It means then that I am in control of the situation. If I feel after one year ‘that’s it’, we can go. There are lots of things to consider when you get to your sixties. One is health, and one is enjoyment. And that’s the thing at the moment, I very much enjoy the game and my health is good. Therefore, there is no problem in that way. But, you never know in two or three years’ time. We are all subject to that. The roll-on contract suits me fine.”

Distressing Week
”I’ve found it distressing, really. My son has had a terrible time. They’ve stolen his mail, gone through his bin bags, hiding in bushes. He’s had to call the police in. That’s not nice. It’s all the result of what we read about this transfer stuff. It’s incomprehensible that I would abuse my position at the club. I’ve been here 17-and-a-half years and nobody has ever raised a doubt about it. All of a sudden because of a private matter regarding a racehorse, all this has come out. It’s not easy to take.”

Fans´ Support Means A Lot
”Manchester United is a fantastic football club. It’s run well and the supporters and myself have had a great bond for years now. I’ve depended on them – at times like this you do depend on them. It’s a great club, and that is why the fans are reacting.”

Ruud’s Contract
”It gives us the long-term view; the signing of Louis Saha on a five-year contract, and Ruud will be here for the next few years. All the ages of players in the squad are good. So, the long-term view is terrific. We are all delighted because there is this concern when you read the newspapers: this and that club are interested in Ruud. That puts all that to bed now.”

Ruud and Louis Partnership
”I think there is potential there, there is no question about that. We are going to work on it. The good thing is that Louis has had a full week with us. He’s done well.”

Louis To Play On Saturday
”Put your mortgage on it!”

Assessing Southampton
”They are persistent. Over the years the Southampton games have always been entertaining. There have only been two draws in the last 20 games. So, I think they will keep to their pattern of having a go. It will be an open match. There always seems to be goals in these games, it should be an interesting match.”

Surprise At Strachan Stepping Down
”I was surprised but, I’ve read his reasons and I think you have to respect them. He promised his family he would leave after two and a half years – I think you have to respect that. He obviously feels it’s very important to his family.”

Injury Concerns
”Giggs and Neville are still doubtful. I won’t be risking them unless they are 100%. Gary in particular has done a decent bit of training this week, Ryan not so much. I could put them on the bench but it’s unlikely.”

Nicky Butt’s Future
”There are only two days left [in the transfer window]. I had a chat with the lad yesterday. I know his concerns and his frustrations. I share them, actually. It’s not easy with the service he has given us. He’s been here since he was a 13-year-old lad. His service has been fantastic. He’s been one of these great warriors you get now and again at a club. If he’s here next week, I think everyone at the club would be happy.”

Winter Break A Good Idea
”Well, it’s only 29 years I’ve been talking about it! I think the FA must have known that the 30 years coming up, that they didn’t wanted to get to that. It would have been a landmark! But, I’m delighted. It’s the right thing, no question about it. Not just for the players but for the coaches also. It will add that bit of freshness because December in our country is quite an exhausting month; the number of games, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day fixtures. The games are always cramped together. I think a two-week break will do the players and the coaches the power of good.”

c´est pas si mal finalement
