" Man Utd to review transfers"

Manchester United are to conduct an internal review of their recent transfer dealings, the club have told the Stock Exchange.
Monday´s announcement comes in the wake of uncertainty over the future of manager Sir Alex Ferguson following a dispute with the club´s biggest shareholders.

United are also set to make a statement about Ferguson´s contract, which has been in negotiation for months.

Magnier is said to be unhappy about the club´s transfer dealings, which will now be looked at again by United´s board.

The statement to the Stock Exchange read: " The board of Manchester United will conduct a thorough internal review of the recent transfer dealings."

But the club insisted their transfer policies were " the most rigorous in football".

Reacting to suggestions in the press of any transfer wrongdoings, the statement added that United had " received no documentary evidence from any party to support these allegations".

United said they would also disclose more detailed information on all future signings - which happened over the recent purchase of Louis Saha.

And the club will ask the Premier League to issue new guidelines for dealing with agents.

Fergie deserves backing
Manchester United still have a chance of extending the services of the man who has turned them into the mightiest football club on earth. The negotiations and delays have gone on for months and still we wait for confirmation that Alex Ferguson has signed the new contract that binds him to Old Trafford until 2007. It was going to happen last week, the week before, sometime soon. Now, we’re told the parties are poised — just waiting for the papers to be vetted by lawyers. In the meantime, Ferguson is being hung out to dry, shot at from all sides as the muck is raked around his legal dispute over fees being earned by the breeding prowess of his former racehorse Rock of Gibraltar.

It´s a fight to the death
Manchester United chiefs fear John Magnier will fight to the death to bring down boss Alex Ferguson. One senior club director said: “Magnier looks like he will stop at nothing. This has gone beyond business.” Majority shareholder Magnier is ready to call for a crisis summit at Old Trafford — but the board are convinced his war on Ferguson will only end when one of the men is forced to back down. United yesterday announced they are to conduct an internal inquiry into all of Ferguson’s recent transfers to prove they have nothing to hide. But that will not prevent Magnier calling for an Emergency General Meeting as he wants an independent inquiry into the transfer deals.

Players say lay off Alex
Manchester United face a player revolt if Alex Ferguson comes under any more pressure at the club. Senior stars — including Roy Keane and Gary Neville — are not prepared to stand by and watch Fergie forced out. To date, the players have kept out of the row currently enveloping Old Trafford and just focused on their football. But if major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus turn up the heat further on the gaffer they will step in. One footballer’s agent said: “The players believe that, so far, there’s just a lot of mud-slinging going on."

A bloody mess
Sir Alex Ferguson last night accepted a 12-month extension to his Manchester United deal after losing out in the power struggle with Irish tycoon John Magnier.Fergie had been holding out for a new three-year offer but the Old Trafford board caved in to Magnier´s demand that he only be offered a 12-month rolling contract, saving shareholders up to £20million. The pressure intensified on Ferguson yesterday when United announced they would hold a " thorough internal review" of all their recent transfer deals. A United source said: " It´s all a bloody mess. No one comes out of this very well."

The wheels come off for Fergie
They might have bought some time but the troubles are far from over for Sir Alex Ferguson or the Manchester United board. Fergie has had to accept he no longer wields the most power at Old Trafford as he prepares to sign a 12-month extension to his contract rather than the three years he coveted. That figure is now clearly Irish racing tycoon John Magnier, the chief shareholder who has proved his stake in the club means he has the ultimate say in what goes. Fergie has at least been temporarily appeased with a new £4million-a-year contract that will settle fans´ fearing their worst-case scenario of the manager leaving the club. But the fear for United chief executive David Gill and the plc chairman Sir Roy Gardner is that the battle at Old Trafford is turning into a nightmare of monumental proportions

Fans ask duo to make grievances public

Manchester United fans have warned John Magnier and JP McManus to put up or shut up as the row with manager Sir Alex Ferguson intensifies.

Despite confirmation on Monday that the Old Trafford club were to launch a " thorough internal review" into all their recent transfer dealings, it does not appear it will be enough to ease the concerns of the Irish business tycoons, who between them own over a quarter of the club.

United supporters have been astonished at the letters leaked to the Sunday Times last weekend which called on chairman Sir Roy Gardner to suspend negotiations over Sir Alex Ferguson´s new contract until their grievances were investigated.

The fans who travelled to Northampton on Sunday left no doubt as to where their loyalties on the matter lie, and the influential Independent Manchester United Supporters Association have now added their voice to the row.

" We keep hearing that John Magnier and JP McManus are powerful businessmen who are not to be trifled with," said IMUSA chairman Jules Spencer.

" We may ´only´ be supporters but, as Rupert Murdoch found out when he tried to buy our club, we will not be messed about either.

" We have a powerful voice and it should not be ignored.

" United fans made their feelings clear at Northampton on Sunday and will continue to do so until this matter is resolved.

" When we want questions answering we ask them. All we are getting at the moment is a personal vendetta and a dirty tricks campaign whose sole purpose appears to be dragging the names of Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson through the mud. It is not acceptable.

" If Magnier or McManus have issues they want to raise, they should be brave enough to raise them in public, not through the media. Otherwise, they should leave our club alone.

" As far as we are aware, neither man has any real connection to United and the longer this situation drags on, the more fans will want to ensure they have nothing to do with our club.

" Our message to them, or indeed any potential suitors, is ´United are not for sale´."
