Ferdinand devastated by ban
Manchester United´s Rio Ferdinand is to appeal against his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.
In December, an independent tribunal found the England defender guilty of missing a drugs test in September.

If Ferdinand loses his appeal he will miss the rest of the season, including Euro 2004 in Portugal.

After the tribunal ended, United lawyer and lawyer Maurice Watkins said the punishment was " savage" and that it was inevitable the club would appeal.

As well as being banned for eight months, Ferdinand was fined £50,000 by the Football Association.

It could be the end of February or even the beginning of March before Ferdinand´s appeal is heard, allowing the defender to continue playing for United.

Since the punishment was announced, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stood by the defender, regularly picking the England international for Premiership and FA Cup games.

United are unhappy that when Manchester City defender Christian Negouai committed a similar offence last year, he was only handed a £2,000 fine.

Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson hopes that Chinese starlet Dong Fangzhuo will be ready for English action within the next few years.
The Premiership champions sealed the signing of the 18-year-old Dalian Shide youngster earlier this week.

He is unlikely to be granted a work permit by the English authorities, but United have already arranged for him to link up with their Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp until he qualifies to play in The Premiership or gains EU nationality.

" Whether he is ready for the first team depends on how much progress he makes. We hope it will be a quick progress, maybe two or three years," Ferguson told the Xinhua news agency.

" It takes one year to adjust to a new country and a new language, but I think Dong will adjust and progress quickly.

" The obvious one is to learn the language, especially on the training field and in the games. It is very difficult otherwise.

" Also adjusting to a new culture, you must embrace new cultures and not find fault with them or compare them. If you can absorb a new culture, then that is a huge help.

" We hope he will progress to become a useful centre forward and a benefit to us in the future."

Manchester United have released the following statement regarding Rio Ferdinand´s appeal decision on his eight-month FA ban:

Manchester United announced today that Rio Ferdinand has decided to begin his suspension from January 20th following the findings of the FA’s Disciplinary Commission last month. The decision follows discussions between the Club, the player and his lawyers.

Whilst Rio Ferdinand accepts that he missed an unannounced drugs test, and publicly apologises for that, he continues to maintain that he did not miss the test deliberately and that he did not have any reason to avoid it.

He therefore intends to appeal against the findings and sanctions imposed by the FA’s Disciplinary Commission last month. Accordingly, the 30 page Notice of Appeal is being finalised and will be lodged with the FA on Monday. The Club respects his decision and will continue to support his appeal.
