United battled the pouring Manchester rain to continue their defence of the FA Youth Cup crown with an impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Brian McClair´s young charges beat a strong City side, the team widely tipped to win this season´s competition, to book a place in the fifth round of the competition - a step closer to a tenth Youth Cup title.
16-year-old Lee Martin, recently signed from Wimbledon, and Youth Team captain Paul McShane were outstanding for United.
However, it was City who started the stronger of the two teams. Blues forward Stephen Ireland had the first real opportunity of the match, pouncing on a lapse in concentration in the United defence, but his shot drifted harmlessly over Tom Heaton´s goal.
Lee Martin, who comes to Old Trafford held in high regard, signalled his intent in the opening exchanges, bursting through the City defence almost nicking the ball away from the last defender Nedum Onuoha, but the powerful centre-half muscled the Reds midfielder off the ball.
United poured forward with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake latching on to a long ball forward from goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The United striker cut inside and forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel in the City goal.
Lee Martin impressed for United early on with plenty of running and good passing. It was his incisive ball forward that found Blake on the right side of the penalty area. Blake chipped the ball over the advancing Schmeichel for Ramon Calliste to tap home on 21 minutes.
Martin had a reasonable shout for a penalty four minutes later when he did brilliantly to keep the ball in play on the byline, and went down under Onuoha´s challenge. The referee waved play on.
City weren´t without chances of their own. Ian Bennett twice went close from long-range, while a Karl Bermingham header forced a fine save from Heaton.
United nearly extended the lead seconds later - Adam Eckersley hit the bar with a curling free kick 20 yards from goal.
The City fans behind the United goal thought their team had an equaliser, when another Bermingham header had to be cleared off the line by Mark Howard.
Reds captain Paul McShane was called into action a minute before half-time when he superbly blocked the lively Bermingham´s shot on goal.
City started the second half as they began the first, with plenty of possession and arguably looking the stronger of the two sides. But, as with the first half, United slowly edged their way back in to game.
Lee Martin continued to impress after the break with surging runs forward. Unfortunately for the 5,547-strong crowd, the impressive 16-year-old was forced off with cramp after 75 minutes - an indication perhaps of just how energetic his performance was in midfeld for the Reds.
Reds substitute Callum Flanagan sealed the win with a little over ten minutes remaining when he ran through on goal and capitalised on a mix-up between Nathan D´Laryea and Kasper Schmeichel to nod past the City keeper and send United through

Saha On The Brink
Louis Saga is on the verge of landing his dream move to Manchester United. As SunSport revealed yesterday, United have upped their bid to £9.8million for the Fulham striker. And that appears to have cracked Fulham’s resolve to keep the want-away French striker. Saha, 25, said last night: “I’m very happy now that we are about to conclude the deal. My dream of playing for United is close to being reality but first I have to complete a medical."
The Butt Race
Middlesbrough are hot on the trail of Nicky Butt — but Alex Ferguson will try to lure Gareth Southgate as part of the deal. Manchester United yesterday granted longserving midfielder Butt his transfer request. SunSport exclusively revealed the England man had asked for a move to secure regular first-team action. But, late last night, it emerged Butt’s switch to the Riverside could involve Boro centre-back Southgate, 33, moving to Old Trafford. United see him as the perfect replacement for Rio Ferdinand, who faces an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test. Spurs are also keen on snapping up United schemer Butt — but Boro boss Steve McClaren appears to hold all the aces. Butt, 29, would jump at the chance of linking up again with McClaren, who has coached him at United and with England.
Fulham have denied that a new bid from Manchester United for French striker Louis Saha has been tabled today ( Wednesday).
The Cottagers rejected a reported £8m bid earlier this month but, although Ferguson has indicated no new offer will be made, the United boss is still searching for a striker as support for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
A Fulham spokesman told the BBC: " There has been no fresh bid, so no bid has been accepted and the player does not have permission to hold talks."
It has been reported in some tabloid newspapers that Saha is due in Manchester today for a medical, but Fulham have strenuously denied these claims.
" Suggestions that he will be have a medical with Manchester United are nonsense," said the Fulham spokesman
We´ve got him
The most acrimonious transfer saga of the season finally ended last night when Manchester United agreed a fee of £9.8million with Fulham for Louis Saha. The French striker will travel to Manchester today for a medical and to finalise personal terms on a four-and-a-half year contract worth around £40,000-a-week, wtice what he was earning at Fulham. The faxed bid, which was almost £2m more than the priginal offer, was enough to pursuade Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed to consult Chris Coleman about releasing the player. Saha, 25, declared his relief that the protracted row over his move was coming to an end and promised to prove to United that he was worth both the money and the hassle. He said: " I´m very happy now that we are about to conclude the deal. My dream of playing for United is close to being reality but first I have to complete a medical. I have wanted to go to United in my mind for a month and now I know that I must prove I can play in the team there. This is a big step up in my career and I know that I will have to show that I´m good enough."

=>Au tour de " L´equipe.fr" d´annoncer sa signature imminente:
