Manchester United flew in PSV Eindhoven´s young superstar Arjen Robben for talks yesterday and are offering him a dream £8million contract. The 19-year-old left-sided striker met Sir Alex Ferguson at the club´s Carrington training HQ during the afternoon as the Old Trafford giants look to close a quick £5m transfer deal. Ferguson rolled out the red carpet for Robben, introducing him to players and potential team-mates like Ruud van Nistelrooy and skipper Roy Keane. And the money men will also put Robben on a huge deal, worth around £30,000 a week for the next five years - putting him in line with his status as one of the best players his country has produced.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes the club are close to signing PSV Eindhoven striker Arjen Robben.
" We are interested in him," Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

" Nothing´s been finalised but we are hoping to do business with PSV."

The 19-year-old Dutch international, who is expected to be in Holland´s Euro 2004 squad, is ineligible for the Champions League having featured for PSV this season.

United, who are keen to sign a striker to support Ruud van Nistelrooy, have also been linked with Fulham´s Louis Saha and Leeds´ Mark Viduka.

Ferguson, who reversed his decision to retire two years ago, also added that he was close to signing a new deal that would keep him at the club until 2007.

" There are no problems whatsoever," he said. " The club are happy with the terms and so am I."

Sir Alex Ferguson singled out Paul Scholes for special praise after his two goals helped Manchester United into the FA Cup fourth round.
The England midfielder scored a sublime second that saw him half-volley Ryan Giggs´ cross past Villa goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen at the near post.

" Paul Scholes is a genius," said Ferguson.

" He just ghosts into those positions and is so difficult to pick up. The second goal was a tremendous finish."

Wes Brown made his long-awaited return from injury in the 2-1 win at Villa Park.

It was Brown´s first full competitive game since May and Ferguson was delighted with the defender´s display.

He added: " Wes Brown had a fantastic 90 minutes.

" That was the plus point. We had to see how he was coping in the second half before I made the substitutions, but I was happy that he was going to be okay."

Arjen Robben is all set to become the new Dutch master - according to old Dutch master Johan Cruyff. Cruyff has hailed Robben´s imminent move to Manchester United as a masterstroke and predicted the young superstar will follow in his footsteps. Cruyff crowned the 19-year-old forward as Holland´s young player of 2003. And he said: " Robben is all set to have a fabulous career. You need to have a lot of qualities to break through at the highest level in world football and he certainly has those. I have no doubts about his future whatsoever."

Manchester United will play against Northampton Town or Rotherham away in the FA Cup fourth round.

The last time United played an FA Cup tie against a club from outside the top two divisions was in January 1995 when Wrexham visited Old Trafford. The Division Two team put up a brave fight in the fourth round but eventually lost 5-2.

Third Division Northampton and First Divison Rotherham drew 1-1 in their third round tie on Saturday. The replay will take place on Tuesday 13 January.

United famously beat Northampton 8-2 in the FA Cup 5th round back in February 1970. George Best was the man of the match that day chipping in with no fewer than six goals in United´s victory at the County Ground.

" There is almost no possibility happneing now because Arjen definitely wants to finish this season at PSV."

But Saha, perhaps now aware that PSV´s Arjen Robben and West Ham´s Jermain Defoe are able alternatives for Sir Alex Ferguson, would not confirm whether or not he would force Fulham´s hand should another bid - expected this week - come in from Old Trafford.
