VASQUEZ ADMITS UNITED APPROACH
It has been revealed that Manchester United wanted to bring in current Real Valladolid coach Fernando Vasquez as Sir Alex Ferguson´s number two when Carlos Queiroz left Old Trafford last summer.
Queiroz departed United to become manager of Real Madrid after one season in which he helped United regain the Premiership title.
Vasquez has now confirmed that he was contacted by the Red Devils to become the Portuguese coach´s possible successor, but ultimately opted to take over Valladolid.
" It´s true that Manchester United called me," stated the 48-year-old.
" They asked me for some information and told me I was on a list of candidates to enter into the coaching staff to replace Queiroz.
" Manchester United are a big club that work very well with players.
" It was a very attractive job."
Vasquez has gathered extensive experience coaching Oviedo, Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano, and now Valladolid, in the Spanish top-flight - as well as Lalin, Racing Club de Ferrol, Lugo and Compostela in the lower leagues - and is a highly-respected coach in Spain.
He has repeatedly worked miracles on very limited resources, and is renowned for being a student of the tactical side of the game.
United have failed to make a big-name appointment to step into Queiroz´s shoes, and instead promoted internally by bringing in Mike Phelan to assist Ferguson.
