" Brown boost for Man Utd"

Manchester United defender Wes Brown could be set to return to action in December.

Brown damaged knee ligaments on the final day of last season and has been out since, but he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and could play first-team football by Christmas.

" Wes started doing bits of training with the young players last week," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

" He will be continuing with that as well. He is making quicker progress than we expected.

" We anticipated it would be the new year before we could think about a comeback, but now we hope we can bring that forward.

" I think we will now be looking for a reserve match for him at the beginning of the next month. If all goes well I could have him in the first-team squad for the festive period.

" It is smashing news, and we are all pleased because he´s had a tough time," he told the Manchester Evening News.

Brown´s return is a boost to United as Rio Ferdinand is facing a possible suspension for missing a drugs test and Gary Neville has suffered a recurrence of an Achilles problem.

Alex Ferguson´s long-term future at Manchester United has been thrown into serious doubt. The Old Trafford board are said to be ‘frantic’ that boss Fergie has gone ahead with legal proceedings against United’s major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus over racehorse Rock of Gibraltar. Now they want the issue sorted out before he signs a new four-year contract. The dispute has delayed the signing of the deal which the club had hoped to announce at last week’s AGM. If Ferguson does not get the support he wants from the United board it could see an end to his 17-year reign.

Manchester United were planning a shock loan signing of Mark Viduka just before Peter Reid left Leeds. The Premiership champions were ready to take the controversial striker when the transfer window opened in January following his bust-up with boss Reid. But Reid´s departure looks to have scuppered the deal, although the Aussie ace is understood to have been keen on the move.
