=>"Ferguson faces rap"

Ferguson could be fined for his comments
Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after he claimed the Champions League draw was fixed.
The United manager has since apologised for casting doubt on the authenticity of the quarter-final draw in which Spanish and Italian clubs were kept apart.

But according to European football´s governing body, that has not made up for what it sees as a breach of regulations.

"With his remarks, Sir Alex cast doubt upon the integrity of the draw for the quarter-finals," a Uefa statement said on Tuesday.

It was a nice draw for the Spanish and Italians, I think they picked it themselves

How Sir Alex described the draw at the time

"According to Uefa disciplinary regulations, member associations, as well as their players, officials and members, should conduct themselves according to the principle of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship.

"A breach of these principles is incurred by anyone whose conduct brings the sport of football, and Uefa in particular, into disrepute."

Ferguson´s case will be dealt with by the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on 1 May, five days before the semi-finals, and is likely to be fined and warned about his future conduct.

After the draw which paired United with Real Madrid, AC Milan with Ajax, Inter Milan with Valencia and Juventus with Barcelona, Ferguson said: "It was a nice draw for the Spanish and Italians, I think they picked it themselves.

"The three Italian teams have avoided each other and so have the three Spanish. How do you think that worked out?

Arsene Wenger: Numerous jibes levelled at French rival
Brian Kidd: Former aide labelled "insecure" in biography
Football League: Reserve teams in League Cup for years
Gordon Strachan: Former player labelled "untrustworthy"
Kevin Keegan: Cracked by Fergie mind games in 1996

"I can tell you, Uefa don´t want us in the final, that´s for sure.

"I don´t know why they have given the final to Old Trafford because they don´t want us to get there."

He apologised for the remarks in a news conference in Madrid on Monday.

And trying to play down Ferguson´s comments, United chief executive Peter Kenyon told BBC Radio Five Live: "With the 10 days we have coming up - games against Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Arsenal - such is the tension that it´s all part of the build-up."

Ferguson has also courted controversy by claiming Real´s Roberto Carlos should have received a lengthy club ban for pushing a referee while playing for Brazil against Portugal last week.

But on Tuesday he said he was standing by that remark.

"At the European Championships three years ago, three Portuguese players were suspended for doing exactly the same thing," he said, referring to Abel Xavier, Nuno Gomes and Paulo Bento.

"I was merely making a point about how powerful Real Madrid are in world football.

"The matter is over now anyway. We don´t mind if he plays because that is what we expected anyway."

Ferguson will not be asked to explain those comments by Uefa since any ban for Carlos would come under the jurisdiction of Fifa.

=>un article tres long mais tres interesant de la BBC sur la meilleur equipe possible ave les effectifs de man utd et du real...

=>"The ultimate eleven"

By Paul Fletcher

Manchester United against Real Madrid in the Champions League is the biggest fixture in European football.

But what would you do if you had to select just one team from both squads with everyone fully fit and raring to go?

It´s tricky and sure to cause controversy, but here goes.

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------
Goalkeeper
Fabian Barthez(1) is a World Cup and European Championships winner with vast experience and real presence.

Barthez has vast experience
The Frenchman is a superb shot-stopper who has recovered from dips in form since moving to Old Trafford and is in the midst of his most consistent season at the club.

Iker Casillas is a hugely talented keeper who broke into the first team at a very early age, but he does not turn 22 until May and Barthez´s vast experience gives him the nod.

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------
Left-back
Much as Mikael Silvestre has impressed this year, Roberto Carlos(2) is widely recognised as the world´s best left-back.

He boasts phenomenal speed, both charging forward and tracking back.

The Brazilian also possesses a fearsome free-kick - the ball seems to accelerate the closer it gets to the goal.

Central defence

Fernando Hierro(3) is for Real Madrid what Laurent Blanc patently isn´t for Manchester United.

At 37, Blanc´s legs are shot and a once-great defender is something of a liability.

Hierro has real presence
Hierro may be 35 but he is still very much a world-class defender who boasts superb distribution and marshals his fellow defenders.

Ivan Helguera is an accomplished football but more naturally suited to midfield than defence and although Wes Brown has had a solid season the second berth goes to Rio Ferdinand(4).

The England defender has made mistakes this season but remains that most rare of commodities - an England defender with real footballing skills.

It is a potent combination and he should complement Hierro superbly.

Right-back

Michel Salgado is superb going forward, pressing the opposition´s left midfielder back into his own half and causing problems for the opposition.

Gary Neville(5) isn´t exactly renown for his goalscoring capabilities but he knows a thing or two about the overlap.

And he is a solid, reliable defender who rarely lets his team-mates down and is not shy of perking up with a word or two should the situation demand it.

606 debate
Who would you pick?

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

Left midfield

Ryan Giggs got the bird from the Old Trafford boo-boys earlier in the season but has silenced his critics with a string of fine performances.

A mazy dribbler, extremely quick of capable of breathtaking moments in big games.

Unfortunately for the Welsh wizard, Real tend to play a certain Zinedine Zidane(6) - and not Steve McManaman - on the left.

The Frenchman is the world´s best footballer - skilful, hard-working, a real eye for goal, an inspiration to his team-mates.......

Central midfield

Claude Makele, Flavio Conceicao or Esteban Matías Cambiasso tend to play in the park for Real.

Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Juan Sebastian Veron or Roy Keane for United.

Scholes(7) and Veron(8) - a fearsome combination
Considering the centre of midfield is such a pivotal area Real tend to deploy their key assets elsewhere but give them freedom to roam through the middle of the park.

Makelele, Conceicao and Cambiasso are all capable but, on paper at least, United have the edge here.

Veron has in many ways been a disappointment for United, especially domestically, but he has been a lynchpin of the team in Europe.

He may be injured for the first-leg in the Bernabeu but he could yet have a key role to play in the return leg.

A couple of seasons ago Keane would have been a definite but the Irish dynamo is not as mobile as he once was.

Scholes, on the other hand, remains a technically gifted attacking midfielder capable of creating scoring opportunities for the dynamic forwards in front of them.

Right midfield

One of the toughest dilemmas of them all - David Beckham(9) or Luis Figo.

Two different players.

Figo a sublime, purposeful dribbler with a superb shot.

Beckham owner of the most gifted right foot of them all, dead-ball specialist and architect of the killer pass.

With so little to choose form counts - and Beckham is better than Figo and has a superb understanding with Neville.

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

Forwards

Lots to choose from here.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Diego Forlan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the one hand.

Raul(10) - sublime genius
Ronaldo, Raul, Guti, Fernando Morientes and Javier Portillo - the wonder kid of Spanish football who can hardly get a game - on the other.

Raul is a sublime striker with a touch and vision that beguiles and mystifies opposition defences. Hence he has scored more Champions League goals than any other player.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been in breathtaking form in this season´s Champions League. Powerful, hard-working and the top scorer in this season´s Champions League.

It is hard to leave the Dutch striker out - but that would mean Ronaldo(11) on the bench.

Fitness is always an issue with the Brazilian - but at the moment he is healthy, full of running and in top form.

Dropping Van Nistelrooy seems harsh but Ronaldo is the goalscorer supreme and must have his place.

Substitutes

Iker Casillas, Wes Brown, Ryan Giggs, Luis Figo, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

NO EXCUSES

Story by editor 8 April 2003

Concentration is the key.

Ferguson said:

"This season we have had a lot of injuries but, now we have almost everyone back, they have absolutely no excuses. My players have learned their lessons now and are far more disciplined and patient. The only thing that will worry me is if we lose concentration. We will suffer if we do that."
The European Cup has been won by Real nine times and Ferguson is determined that this United side put their name back on the roll of honour.

Ferguson added:

"Real Madrid have been the barometer of European football for 40-odd years. They have their name all over this trophy and it is important that we get ours on it again.”

comparatif hierro/ rio ferdinand...

=>Fernando HierroDefenderThe 35-year-old defender is one of the most experienced players in the game, forming the cornerstone of the Madrid rearguard for the last 13 years. The Spanish international is the most capped player in his country´s history, and although his pace may now be in some question, his threat from set-pieces is still a formidable weapon(64% tacles reussis et 83% passes)
6 matchs, 479 mns ( 1 carton jaune)

=>Rio FerdinandDefenderIf ever there was a time to show just why Rio Ferdinand is the most expensive defender in the world, then now is the time to stand up and be counted. The England blocker faces a mammoth test of his defensive acumen on Tuesday, when he bids to nullify the combined threat of Ronaldo and Raul at the Bernabeu ( 78% tacles reussis et 86% passes)

Fergie´s View: Real Madrid Preview

7/4/03 3:37 PM

Sir Alex Ferguson faced the press for the crucial Champions League quarter final clash with Real Madrid in the Bernabeu stadium. This is what the boss had to say...

Bravery
"We have to be brave and enjoy it. Real Madrid have some fantastic players and we have to recognise that. But we have to look at the match-winners of our own. If we go there afraid of the names in their side, we will be afraid all night."

Good preparation
"We were fortunate that we could ease off for the last 20 minutes against Liverpool but now we´re looking forward to what should be a great game.´´

United need an away goal
"I was probably the only man who was disappointed with the 0-0 scoreline three years ago in the quarter final against Real. It is never healthy in big games like that and in the second leg we played with our hearts, not our heads. That is a danger in these type of matches. I would hope the experience we have picked up and the discipline we have in Europe now will help us this time."

Winner takes the European crown?
"It is going to be the biggest game. Whoever wins it has a marvellous chance of winning the cup. Playing Real Madrid in a quarter-final tie just spells out the magic of Europe."

Tough opposition
"Just looking at the number of times they have won the trophy tells you how they view it. They are devoted to winning it and we would like to be adding our name to it a few more times than it is there at the moment. We can only do that if we beat teams like Real Madrid."
