Blues boss Claudio Ranieri sees the highly-rated 21-year-old as a long-term replacement for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and has tried to persuade Parma to part with him. Ranieri wants to re-form Adriano´s brilliant Parma partnership with red-hot Romanian Adrian Mutu. But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen too and is prepared to allow Inter to open talks with Ryan Giggs to ease them out of the race. Inter part-own Adriano and intend to buy the striker outright at the end of the season for £8m. Interview AP: la FIFA souhaite une sanction contre Ferdinand

BRUXELLES ( AP) - Michel D´Hooghe, le chef de la lutte antidopage à la FIFA, a estimé mardi que l´international anglais Rio Ferdinand doit être puni pour avoir fait faux-bond à un contrôle antidopage le mois dernier et indiqué que la fédération internationale se saisira du cas si la fédération anglaise prenait une sanction trop indulgente.

" Ce cas est sérieux et il doit être puni", a déclaré D´Hooghe, le " patron" de la commission médicale de la Fédération internationale de football, lors d´une interview téléphonique accordée à l´Associated Press.

Le défenseur de Manchester United a passé trois heures lundi devant une commission de la Fédération anglaise à expliquer pourquoi il n´avait pas satisfait à ce contrôle antidopage inopiné. Il a indiqué avoir oublié de s´y rendre.

Selon les règles édictées par l´Agence mondiale antidopage ( AMA), Ferdinand pourrait être banni deux ans, mais D´Hooghe a rappelé que cette réglementation AMA ne fait pas force de loi pour la FIFA.

" Nous étudions les affaires au cas par cas et la sanction peut être inférieure ou supérieure à deux ans", a-t-il dit. " La FIFA va maintenant attendre et voir si une sanction convenable est prononcée". Il n´a pas été indiqué clairement quand la FA rendra sa décision.

Selon la réglementation antidopage de la FA, refuser un test ou ne pas livrer d´échantillon d´urine est considéré comme une infraction. Ferdinand peut être accusé de deux choses: absence au contrôle ou absence volontaire au contrôle. La seconde accusation, plus grave, pourrait conduire à deux ans de suspension; la première pourrait se solder par une suspension plus courte et une amende.

D´Hooghe a refusé d´indiquer ce que risque Ferdinand. " Nous allons laisser les Anglais effectuer leur travail", a-t-il dit. " Si tout est correct, nous n´aurons rien à faire".

D´Hooghe se rendra à Doha au Qatar mercredi pour suivre le congrès de la FIFA le week-end prochain., et indiqué que le cas Ferdinand sera abordé lors d´une réunion du comité exécutif.

La FIFA qui entend pouvoir appliquer des peines disctinctes selon les cas, estime que la réglementation antidopage éditée par l´AMA n´est qu´indicative. AP

Rio Ferdinand was last night warned he will face a minimum THREE- MONTH drugs ban after FIFA stepped into the defender´s battle with the Football Association. FIFA´s anti-doping chief Michel D´Hooghe insisted they are ready to over- rule the FA if they do not come down hard enough on Ferdinand after he missed a random drugs test. And Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is also ready to risk the wrath of FIFA by picking Ferdinand for Saturday´s Premiership clash with Leeds - even though the FA may keep him waiting another fortnight before deciding whether to charge him. D´Hooghe said: " The case is serious and he certainly has to be punished. FIFA will now wait and assess whether a serious sanction is forthcoming, one which fits the infringement. We´ll let the English do their work first. If everything is correct we won´t have to do anything." FIFA recommend a three-month ban for missing a drugs test and D´Hooghe made it clear that the FA must suspend Ferdinand - or they will. The maximum penalty is a two-year ban but a shorter suspension of three months - which will satisfy FIFA - is more likely should Ferdinand be found guilty.

Under Wenger, they have been brandished a staggering 52 red cards in seven years and now face losing half their team through suspension. Arsenal are top in three of those five classes — including respect towards referees and the behaviour of club officials.
