Manchester United laboured to victory over Charlton and were indebted to Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored both goals.
United were not at their best and Sir Alex Ferguson will surely be hoping the Paul Scholes returns to action as soon as possible to inject some much-needed creativity into a midfield bereft of ideas and cohesion.
Much of the lethargy which had been a feature of United´s 1-0 defeat to Southampton lingered at The Valley as the men in black failed to establish any rhythm in the first half.
There were brief flashes of Cristiano Ronaldo´s natural flair that totally exposed Radostin Kishishev in Charlton´s defence.
And the Portuguese starlet went closest to fashioning a goal in what was an otherwise dour 45 minutes.
Phil Neville found Ronaldo on the edge of the Charlton area and he pulled the ball back for Ryan Giggs, who saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by John Fortune.
After the break, Charlton took the game to United and Scott Parker was instrumental in pushing the home side forward.
United lost their own driving force when Roy Keane limped off early into the second half after failing to recover from a first-half challenge with Parker and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came on in his place.
And within minutes of their reshuffle, United took the lead courtesy of the predatory Van Nistelrooy.
Charlton failed to clear a Giggs free-kick on the edge of the area and after the ball had deflected off several player, United´s Dutch striker was on hand to slam home the opener.
The Addicks threatened to steal an equaliser, but their cause was not helped when striker Euell was sent off for a second bookable offence following a crude tackle on Gary Neville.
Van Nistelrooy made sure of the points for the visitors when he converted Giggs´ free-kick late on.

" Man Utd dismiss takeover talks"
Manchester United have played down newspaper reports that they are the subject of a possible £600m takeover.
The Observer newspaper claims three overseas billionaires are each poised to launch a bid to buy the Premiership champions.
But United spokesman Patrick Harveson told BBC Sport: " We have had no approaches and the story is pure speculation."
Reports of big money takeovers of Premiership clubs have increased since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in July.
Since then Aston Villa have been the subject of takeover talks with a billionaire from Venezuela.
The Observer claims the trio of interested parties in United have each sought advice about how much it would cost to buy the Old Trafford club.
The paper does not name any of the three interested parties, but says they are all said to be ´around as rich if not richer than´ Abramovich.
" Ferguson relieved with win"
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to striker Ruud van Nistelrooy after his goals earned them a battling 2-0 win at Charlton.
United bounced back from the Southampton defeat, although it was not all good news with Roy Keane being ruled out of the midweek Champions League game against Panathinaikos.
The Premiership champions were made to work for the three points against a Charlton side reduced to 10 men following Jason Euell´s dismissal and were rescued by two second-half goals from a relentless Van Nistelrooy.
" All we need to do with Ruud is get the ball in the box," Ferguson said on MUTV. " He´s a predator and he´s always moving in the box."
Ferguson was also pleased with young winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who shrugged off some heavy challenges from the home side.
" There were a few tackles on him but he just got up and got on with it," said the manager.
" Once he got his treatment, he wanted to get the ball again - he´s got that courage."
When you come to Charlton you know you have to work hard
Sir Alex Ferguson
Van Nistelrooy scrambled home the opener in the 62nd minute and Charlton´s chances were hampered when Euell was sent off when he earned his second yellow card for clattering into Gary Neville.
The home side battled on but another close-range effort from the Dutchman in the 81st minute ensured the points left with United.
" When you come to Charlton you know you have to work hard and at times we had to dig in but I think we had the better quality," added Ferguson.
" Charlton are very energetic. When they went down to 10 men, their players were chasing everywhere so it was a good result for us."
Keane was taken off midway through the second half and joins Paul Scholes and Kleberson on the sidelines.

=>Mauvaise nouvelle...
Sir Alex Ferguson last night revealed that an operation now looks inevitable for his midfield playmaker. Scholes will see a specialist tomorrow expecting to have his worst fears confirmed. Although Scholes recovered in a quick-fire 17 days after his last hernia op, Manchester United´s own club doctors predict a longer rehabilitation period as it will be the player´s THIRD such operation.

" It turned out that my stepfather, who was a person I was very close to, the person to whom I dedicated Moon Palace, Norman Schiff, a wonderful man who earned his living as a labor lawyer and negotiator. One of his clients was the Esso Seamen´s Union, a company union. So I knew all about these ships and as I was about to leave school I said, " Norman, do you think you can get me a job on a ship?" and he said " I´ll take care of it for you." It´s extremely difficult to get these jobs because you can´t get a job on a ship unless you have seaman´s paper´s, and you can´t get seaman´s papers unless you have a job on a ship. There had to be a way to break through the circle, and he was the one who arranged it for me. So I shipped out. It´s quite amusing, I went through all the exams, I got my papers, and then I had to sit around and wait until a ship from the fleet came into the New York area with an opening, and it was unclear how long this wait was going to be. Manchester United captain Roy Keane is set to miss Tuesday´s Champions League opener against Panathinaikos at Old Trafford.
The midfielder limped out of Saturday´s win at Charlton with an ankle injury.
And Sir Alex Ferguson, with one eye on Sunday´s match with Arsenal, may opt to give Keane more time to recover.
Paul Scholes ( hernia) and Kleberson ( dislocated shoulder) are also sidelined, while teenage midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to make his European debut for United.
