=>"Transfers put Saints in red"
Niemi arrived from Hearts last year
Southampton have announced an annual loss of £500,000 despite reaching the FA Cup final last season.
The Saints, who enjoyed their highest ever Premier League finish last term, confirmed the club had an income of £8.7m for the financial year ending 31 May.
But a combination of transfer fees and wages - plus £2.2m paid in interest - means that Saints made an annual loss.
Boss Gordon Strachan spent over £9m on new recruits, including Antti Niemi, Michael Svensson, David Prutton and Danny Higginbotham.
Southampton also employed a wages system which heavily rewarded success meant bonus payments were high.
Chairman Rupert Lowe also confirmed the losses came in tandem with a hike in annual turnover, which has grown to by almost £10m from the previous year to £48.8m.
Lowe said: " In terms of comparative league turnover, our club now ranks somewhere around 12th in the FA Premier League.
" Sponsorship and hospitality sales levels have never been higher and the Cup run helped to achieve record total sales of merchandise."

Fortune on comeback trail
Quinton Fortune has put himself in line for a Manchester United recall by completing the full 90 minutes in Thursday´s reserve team draw with Sunderland.
Fortune has managed one substitutes´ appearance since aggravating a thigh injury during the opening-day win over Bolton.
The South African, who was operating in central midfield, came through the 2-2 draw without a problem and is pushing for a place in United´s side to tackle Charlton on 13 September.
Daniel Nardiello and Mark Lynch scored United´s goals as they twice came from behind.
The game also featured Sunderland´s Jason McAteer, who is finally back on the comeback trail following a hamstring injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United are appealing to the fans who continue to stand in seated areas at the Club´s matches.
This recurring problem has resulted in reduced ticket allocations before and the United boss is hopeful that common-sense will prevail and those offending supporters will realise the futility of their behaviour.
On 20th August Greenwich Council issued an order in the local magistrates court seeking a reduction in ticket allocation to Manchester United from 3,200 to 2,600 for the Barclaycard Premiership fixture at The Valley on Saturday 13th September.
The order arises from the fact that many United supporters remained standing throughout at last season´s corresponding fixture, blocked gangways and aisles, and damaged a pitch side exit gate despite repeated requests to take their seats.
Charlton Athletic is challenging this order in the courts and a verdict is expected today.
Charlton Athletic chief executive Peter Varney said " The outcome of this case has enormous implications both for my club and Manchester United going forward as it is the first time a Prohibition Order has been issued against a football club in this way. It is clear to me that if this order is successful other orders will follow for other Manchester United away fixtures this season. The presence of away supporters is an integral part of the fantastic atmosphere at Premiership matches and we don´t want to see large empty spaces in the away ends at grounds. It is vital that when Manchester United supporters visit The Valley on 13th September they sit down and most importantly do not block aisles, gangways and exits."
In echoing Peter Varney´s sentiments, Sir Alex Ferguson said: " We fully understand our supporters standing in moments of excitement or when a goal is scored, that is only natural, but we do not and cannot condone continual standing in all-seated areas.
Not only is it dangerous and inconsiderate, it is also against local by-laws which were put in place for the safety and protection of fans visiting football stadiums.
Support at away games is a vital and traditional part of matchdays and none of us, including the players, would like to see that put at risk, but it is only the fans themselves who can ensure that this problem is resolved."

Blague :
ca veux dire pas mal de choses...
