Man Utd face defensive crisis
Mikael Silvestre suffered two heavy knocks against Stoke
Manchester United are battling to find four fit defenders to play in Saturday´s Premiership opener against Bolton.
Mikael Silvestre suffered an injury scare in Wednesday´s friendly against Stoke - leaving Sir Alex Ferguson with only one fully-fit defender.
Wes Brown is a long-term casualty and Gary Neville will definitely miss out with a hamstring injury.
Phil Neville suffered an injury in Sunday´s Community Shield which has left him struggling to be fit.
John O´Shea was left on the bench against Arsenal in Cardiff as a precaution although he should shake off a minor knock.
Even experimental left-back Quinton Fortune is carrying an injury.
That leaves Rio Ferdinand as the only definite starter for Ferguson, who may have to move Roy Keane to the centre of his defence against Bolton.
The options are John O´Shea at right-back and Phil Neville on the left
Sir Alex Ferguson
Silvestre lasted 70 minutes of Wednesday´s 3-1 defeat to Stoke in United´s final pre-season outing at the Britannia Stadium and was eventually withdrawn as a precaution after taking two heavy knocks during the game.
The first one in particular needed lengthy treatment after Silvestre appeared to turn an ankle and Ferguson was left banking on his walking wounded to recover for Saturday.
" Quinton´s got a niggly groin injury and Gary has a hamstring," said Ferguson.
" The options are John O´Shea at right-back and Phil Neville on the left."
Ferguson is also likely to hand a starting role to American goalkeeper Tim Howard on Saturday after Fabien Barthez failed to impress against Stoke.
Barthez was handed one last chance to salvage his first-team place after losing his spot to Roy Carroll at the end of last season.
The eccentric Frenchman made a decent one-handed save to deny Carl Asaba in the first half but was exposed when Marc Goodfellow´s shot cannoned off the crossbar and into the net off the back of Barthez´s head.
But Ferguson was impressed with new signing Eric Djemba-Djemba, who improved his chances of starting against Bolton with a competent performance.
" Eric did well - I thought he was our best player," Ferguson said.
" He passed with a great authority throughout the game which was good to see."
Stoke pile pressure on Barthez
Fabien Barthez failed to impress at the Britannia Stadium as Stoke sent Manchester United spinning to defeat in their final pre-season warm-up.
Barthez, under pressure to retain his place in goal ahead of new signing Tim Howard, endured another torrid time as Stoke´s Mark Goodfellow grabbed a brace.
Diego Forlan had levelled Goodfellow´s opening effort with a superb 25-yard strike when the Stoke man picked up possession again fully 30 yards from Barthez´s goal.
Spotting the Frenchman off his line, the Stoke midfielder lofted his shot towards goal.
And as Barthez arced backwards trying to keep it out, he was struck by the ball as it cannoned off the bar and could do nothing to prevent it crossing the line.
If that was not bad enough, Barthez was beaten by Chris Iwelumo´s rasping near post effort, before he eventually made way for Ricardo late in the second half.
Barthez was also in goal in United´s only other pre-season defeat - last week´s 3-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon.
I thought he was our best player. He passed with a great authority throughout the game which was good to see
Sir Alex Ferguson on Eric Djemba-Djemba
Apart from deciding who will start for United in goal against Bolton, manager Sir Alex Ferguson´s will also be concerned over the fitness of Mikael Silvestre, who needed lengthy treatment on his ankle
With Gary Neville and Quinton Fortune already doubtful for the Trotters´ visit, Ferguson can ill-afford to lose any more defenders.
Eric Djemba-Djemba was handed a late caution for a clumsy challenge on Wayne Thomas, but Ferguson was pleased with his new recruit.
" Eric did well," he said. " I thought he was our best player.
" He passed with a great authority throughout the game which was good to see."
Stoke boss Tony Pulis refused to get carried away by the win, which was achieved in front of over 21,000 fans.
" The crowd we got just proves the potential we have here if we did get things going," he said.
" In terms of league points it counts for nothing but it should help our confidence and some of these lads have done things they will remember for the rest of their lives.
" Marc Goodfellow especially did well. He has everything you need to be a good player, it is just a matter of putting all those pieces together."
Fletch international boost
Highly-promising United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been called up to Scotland´s full squad for next week´s international against Norway.
It is the first time Fletch has been named in the full squad, but was one of 24 players named by manager Berti Vogts.
Fletcher has been hugely impressive since making his first team United debut against Deportivo in the Champions League last season.
The 19-year-old is the latest product to emerge from United´s youth ranks to break onto the fringes of the first team.
This season promises to be big for Fletcher, who is a well-liked member of United´s squad. Despite facing stiff opposition for a midfield spot at United, international experience can onyl help his plight.
Fletcher´s widely-reported injury problems earlier in his career delayed his impact at Old Trafford. Darren shot up in height, which led to injury problems - notably a persistent metatarsal injury.
Now 6ft, and beginning to fill out, Fletcher is looking to realise the potential that saw him rated as one of the hottest prospects in British football when he came south of the border as a 16-year-old.
Fletcher played in United´s friendly against Stoke on Wednesday night in what was a lacklustre team performance from the Reds. Fletcher was one of the few bright spots at the Britannia Stadium.
His strength is his range of passing, but against Stoke he proved has the grit to put in tackles and track back. In the second half Fletcher was United´s most competent performer.
And that makes his inclusion in Scotland´s squad all the more justified.
Reds announce squad numbers
Manchester United´s 2003/04 squad numbers have been announced, and still the number nine shirt remains vacant.
The absence of a number nine perhaps indicates the immense role Ruud van Nistelrooy plays for United. Ruud recently said: “The ideal striker is a combination between a number nine and a number ten; a goalscorer and a playmaker,” and playing the lone striker role, van Nistelrooy has certainly gone some way to achieving that impressive feat.
Ruud’s ability to play up front on his own perhaps vindicates United’s lack of desire to fill the number nine shirt, which has remained vacant since Andy Cole’s departure in December 2001.
Another notable change is that Wes Brown has taken the number six shirt - a huge confidence boost for the 23-year-old defender who looks like being Rio Ferdinand´s long-term partner at the heart of United´s defence.
Wes is currently on the sidelines as a result of the latest in a string of desperately disappointing injury setbacks. Wes underwent knee surgery over the summer after picking up the knee ligament injury on the final day of last season at Goodison Park.
News that he will give up his number 24 shirt for the more prominent " 6", worn by the likes of Gary Pallister and Jaap Stam in recent years. United have traditionally followed the " 5" and " 6" central defensive partnership so it appears Ferguson has earmarked Rio and Wes as his defensive duo.
The number 24 goes to another highly-promising prospect emerging through the ranks at Old Trafford. 19-year-old Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher takes Wes´ old shirt number.
Cristiano Ronaldo, as reported first on ManUtd.com, will take up the number seven shirt, worn by the likes of George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and the shirt´s predecessor, David Beckham.
