Manchester United are preparing a £15m double swoop on West Ham by landing Joe Cole as well as Jermain Defoe. SunSport revealed yesterday that United are confident of completing a £10m deal for striker Defoe this week. Now boss Alex Ferguson has made an enquiry about England midfielder Cole ( left) - along with Chelsea. And cash-strapped West Ham would find it impossible to turn down United’s offer. Tim Howard will start the new season as Manchester United´s No.1 goalkeeper, ahead of French World Cup winner Fabien Barthez. Sir Alex Ferguson was so impressed with the form of new signing Howard on United´s pre-season tour of the United States he is ready to plunge the American into action against Arsenal in the Community Shield this weekend. Howard was in inspired form during United´s 3-1 victory over Barcelona here, making a series of crucial saves to ensure Fergie´s side made it four straight wins on the tour. And while the local boy was making good, the man who turned down United, Ronaldinho, was constantly booed by the largely pro-United crowd of almost 68,000. Barthez has been out of favour since the end of last season when Fergie dropped the increasingly erratic Frenchman after deciding he was no longer his first choice.

United are looking for Trabel
Manchester United target Hatem Trabelsi has revealed that he is desperate for a move to Old Trafford. The Tunisian confirmed last night that talks are underway to secure his £6million transfer from Ajax. Negotiations are set to progress this week, and the deal could even be completed by Friday. Trabelsi, 26, a quick, skilful and strong defender in the mould of Frenchman Lilian Thuram, said: " I have heard from the club and from the media that Manchester United are interested in signing me. " I don´t know exactly what stage the deal is at, my agent knows more about that. But of course I would be really delighted to play for a club like Manchester United - you can´t turn down the chance to play for a club that big. I´m not sure how far down the line we are, and really I will just now wait and see what happens." Ajax manager Ronald Koeman admitted that there was interest from United. He said no formal bid had been made but conceded there was little he could do to keep the player if United want him.

Manchester United have warned Chelsea they must increase their offer substantially if they are to have any chance of signing Juan Sebastian Veron. United confirmed they have rejected an initial bid from Chelsea for Veron of around £13million. The Old Trafford board value the midfielder they bought for £28m two seasons ago at £17m and are not prepared to accept less. United are aware they are going to incur a huge loss on Veron, given the deflated state of the transfer market, but are determined to minimise it. It is clear United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to let Veron go, despite his extraordinary claim last week that he knew nothing of the possible move. After United ended their US tour, Fergie was asked whether Veron would be in his squad at the start of the new season. " I´m afraid I cannot answer that," said Fergie, the clearest indication yet that Veron is likely to be playing at StamfordBridge next season. The crunch will come when Fergie selects his side for Sunday´s Community Shield against Arsenal and the opening Premiership game of the season against Bolton on August 16.

Veron must make decision on future move - Fergie

Juan Sebastian Veron will decide in the next 24 hours whether his future lies with Manchester United or Chelsea.

The Argentinian star has been at the centre of speculation for the last three weeks, with his agent saying he will move to Stamford Bridge, despite constant claims from Sir Alex Ferguson that he wants him to stay at Old Trafford.

With United back in Europe following their successful pre-season tour to America, mystery still surrounds the Veron situation.

As they prepare for Wednesday´s friendly against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, chief executive Peter Kenyon has confirmed an official offer from Chelsea has been received, but there is no indication United are ready to accept it.

With the Champions League transfer window for the qualifying stages closing on Wednesday, Ferguson said: " It could be up to Seba to decide whether he wants to stay on with us, or move on. I would have no problems if he says he wants to carry on playing for us."

Veron starred in United´s win over Juventus in New York last week, after also featuring in wins over Celtic and Team America.

But because he remained on the bench as Barcelona were beaten on Sunday, rumours he was heading out of the club began to circulate again.

Whether he goes or stays, Ferguson has made it clear he has no plans to move for another midfielder before the other transfer deadlines come into force at the end of the month.

With David Beckham gone, Veron possibly going and Ronaldinho slipping through his fingers the United boss remains happy with summer signings made for that department which seems to have ruled out possible moves for West Ham´s Joe Cole, and recent rumours he might make an audacious bid for Patrick Vieira.

Summer signings Kleberson and Eric Djemba-Djemba are set to link up with their team-mates this week after taking their summer break, and Fergie added: " I won´t be bringing anyone else into the midfield.

" We´re getting a proven player in Kleberson and one I think could develop into someone truly versatile. I can see him performing in a number of positions for us."
