Manchester United are set to make their fifth summer signing after tabling a £6m offer for Ajax full-back Hatem Trabelsi.

United have added Tim Howard, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson, subject to a work permit, and David Bellion to their squad during the transfer window.

And BBC Sport understands that United are now waiting for 26-year-old Tunisian international Trabelsi to agree personal terms before heading to Old Trafford.

Trabelsi looked impressive in Ajax´s 3-0 win over Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly on Sunday and would provide the defensive cover that Sir Alex Ferguson is seeking.

The United manager admitted at the weekend that shoring up his defence had become a priority following injuries to Wes Brown and Gary Neville, who strained a hamstring during their tour of the United States.

" If you look throughout the squad the one area where we´re probably short is in the back four positions, because of Wes Brown´s injury," said Ferguson.

" I don´t really have a lot of alternatives there. I could put Roy Keane in there. I could use Phil Neville.

" I could possibly put Kleberson back, and Eric Djemba-Djemba played at right-back a couple of times for Nantes.

" We couldn´t afford another injury and it is an area I would like to strengthen.

" It is what I worry about the most and, hopefully, I can do something about it."

Trabelsi is a dynamic full-back and his ability to deliver crosses would go some way to filling the void left by David Beckham on the right flank.

He has enjoyed two very successful seasons with Ajax since moving from Tunisian side Sportif Sfaxien in 2001.

His impressive form during last season´s Champions League led to him being linked with a move to Arsenal.

And United´s cross town rivals Manchester City also wanted to bring Trabelsi to the Premiership but could not meet Ajax´s asking price.

United would hope to conclude a deal for Trabelsi before the Champions League registration deadline on 5 August.

The 20-year-old striker has long been touted as a potential target for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

And the link re-surfaced again, with claims that United will attempt to push through a deal when they return from their tour of America.

Defoe stunned West Ham by handing in a transfer request the day after they were relegated from the Premiership.

But the Hammers insist they want Defoe to stay - although the England under-21 striker would be desperate to clinch a move if United made a firm approach.

Defoe is the latest player to be linked with an Upton Park exit, after the departures of Lee Bowyer, Les Ferdinand, Trevor Sinclair, Gary Breen and Freddie Kanoute.

Après avoir recruté Tim Howard, Eric Djemba, Kleberson et David Bellion, Manchester United pourrait encore renforcer son effectif en s´attachant, entre autres, les services du défenseur de l´Ajax Amsterdam, Hatem Trabelsi.

Les dirigeants mancuniens, qui ont d´ores et déjà fait un offre à Hatem Trabelsi, attendent désormais son accord sur les termes de son contrat ( Le montant de l´indemnité de transfert serait de 6 millions de livres, ndlr).
En raison des blessures de Wes Brown et Gary Neville, sir Alex Ferguson veut renforcer sa défense. " Si vous regardez notre équipe, il n´y a qu´un seul secteur de jeu où nous sommes un peu courts, la défense ( ...) Nous ne pouvons nous permettre d´avoir un nouveau blessé et c´est forcément un secteur du jeu que nous devons renforcer", explique le manager des Red Devils.

L´international tunisien était arrivé à Amsterdam en 2001 en provenance du Club Sfaxien. Il a depuis impressionné autant dans le championnat néerlandais qu´en Ligue des champions. Manchester United espère conclure son transfert avant le 5 août, deadline fixée par l´UEFA pour inscrire les joueurs en C1.

Par ailleurs, les Red Devils seraient également sur la piste de l´attaquant néerlandais de l´Ajax, Rafael van der Vaart, pur produit du club batave. Alex Ferguson aimerait, en effet, l´associer à son compatriote Ruud Van Nistelrooy à la pointe de l´attaque mancunienne. Mais, attention, Liverpool est également sur les rangs pour s´attacher ses services.

Enfin, dernier dossier en attente à Manchester, celui de Juan Sebastian Veron. Peter Kenyon a assuré qu´il donnerait une réponse aux dirigeants de Chelsea avant mercredi : " Nous avons bien reçu une offre officielle de Chelsea pour Veron et nous l´étudions. Nous devrions donner notre réponse d´ici mercredi."

Manchester United and Liverpool will lead the £15m transfer chase for Ajax´s Rafael van der Vaart if he quits Holland.

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is a long-time admirer of the 20-year-old forward, who was outstanding for Ajax as they won the Amsterdam tournament.

Houllier sang the young Dutchman´s praises after his performance in the goalless draw against Liverpool on Friday - and his name is still on Anfield´s shopping list.

Liverpool were interested in a deal for Van der Vaart in the summer of 2002, but decided against an immediate move.

Houllier will renew his interest if Ajax relax their current hard-line stance that Van der Vaart is not for sale at any price.

But BBC Sport understands Manchester United have now also made their interest known and will make every attempt to pair him with fellow countryman Ruud van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford.

United had spies in Amsterdam on Sunday to watch Ajax defender Hatem Trabelsi - but they were also running the rule over the impressive Van der Vaart.

He is expected to become a target for Europe´s elite group of clubs, but it is believed the Premiership is his most likely destination.

Van der Vaart is a product of the Ajax youth system, joining the club at the age of 10 and working his way through the ranks.

He is now a regular member of Dick Advocaat´s Holland squad and has already won seven caps.

Ajax are insisting Van der Vaart is not for sale - which means Houllier and Ferguson may have to wait until next summer to land the player regarded as one of Europe´s brightest talents.

But both clubs are waiting for the first indication of Ajax´s willingess to do a deal and will then launch a Premiership battle for Van der Vaart.
