England goalkeeper David James was recently offered a novel way to help his performance development – by training with the Miami Dolphins American football team.
Competitive levels
The West Ham United FC player accepted an invitation from the Dolphins to attend their training camp, which gave him the chance to gain an invaluable insight into the psychological and mental techniques used by NFL athletes to up their performance and competitive levels.
Fitness tested
James´ overall fitness was tested at the session, and he was also involved in kicking, throwing and catching practice with Dolphins squad members, as part of a crash course in three positions – quarterback, wide receiver and kicker.
Great opportunity
" I was delighted to have been invited - it´s a great opportunity to learn about more about the sport, and put myself up against some of the best athletes in the world," James told the Dolphins´ website. " I was a fan in the 1980s and 90s and I can´t wait to see players like Ricky Williams going through their paces, and seeing how I stack up against him."
Way forward
" American Football has always shown the way forward in terms of conditioning and performance and I am keen to apply any tips or insights that I can gain to my career as a professional footballer.
Athleticism and ability
" David is exactly the kind of European sports star who we feel has the all-round athleticism and ability to hold his own in the NFL," said Tony Allen, Director of Game Development for the NFL in Europe.
Search stepped up
" As we step up our search for European athletes who can develop into potential NFL players, we are excited about the Dolphins giving us the opportunity to showcase a sportsman of his physical ability in an NFL environment."
Kicking difficult
On his return from Florida, James said that he had found the kicking part of the session difficult. The keeper said that although he is able to kick a football prodigious distances, there is a different technique to kicking the ball in American football, and that there was also an art to catching the ball.
Positive report
Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt gave a positive report on James´ session. Wannstedt said that with his size and ability, James had the athleticism needed to make a good player. As for James, he hopes to soon be able to watch a top NFL game in person, to remind himself about his own American football baptism, which he says left him buzzing.
