"Title race twists still to come"

Reds winger Ryan Giggs says there are plenty more surprises to come in the race for the Premiership crown.

United are currently poised two points behind Arsenal going into the final few furlongs of the title charge, with Newcastle hanging on to their coat tails in third place.

“Nothing much surprises me about the Premiership these days. There will be plenty more twists and turns between now and the end of the season,” Giggs said in an interview with City Life magazine.

Giggs is all too aware of how the tide can change in the unpredictable Premier League – United were in crisis with no chance of silverware only a few months ago.

But, as Giggs points out, the title is up for grabs. “We’re only two points adrift now and it’s all to play for,” Ryan said. “We’ve still got to go to Highbury and St James’ Park, so anything could happen.”

And Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle are by no means out of it. According to Giggs, the Magpies are very much contenders for Premiership honours this season should either Arsenal or United slip up.

“I think it’s still a three-horse race between us, Arsenal and Newcastle but I’m gong to predict the order we’ll all finish,” he said.

"Euro quest the priority, insists Ruud"

Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted that Manchester United have prioritised Champions League glory ahead of the Premiership as he attempts to win his first trophy at the club. The Holland striker unwittingly drew some of the sting from tomorrow´s Premiership showdown with traditional rivals Liverpool when he set out the ambitions of the Old Trafford club. He said: "We want to win everything with United and we are en route to doing that. We can win both tournaments we are playing for and it´s only the best teams who can say that. What happened last season was a sickener for me. I´m not used to the season ending and not picking up a trophy of any kind."
Ian McGarry, Daily Mail

"We have no fear"

Rio Ferdinand insists England have no fears about stepping into the Turkish cauldron awaiting them in October. England play their final Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey and are being warned of a red-hot welcome after Wednesday´s stormy 2-0 win. But Manchester United´s Ferdinand said: "When you are a footballer they are the sort of games you love. We are not worried about the atmosphere or anything they might have in store for us." England could be kicked out of Euro 2004 - if there is any further crowd trouble. Europe´s governing body UEFA have launched a probe into the pitch invasions at the Stadium of Light and are fed up with the FA´s failure to get to grips with the hooligan problem. The Turks have vowed they will get revenge and their kit man made an ominous gesture to the English in the tunnel by drawing his finger across his throat.
Shaun Custis and Mark Irwin, The Sun

"Ruud: I want 150 goals"

Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned Arsenal and Real Madrid that his goals will fire Manchester United to a Premiership and Champions League double. The Dutchman is still trying to heal the scars from last season´s failure to win a trophy. And he knows the only medication that will take away the pain comes in the form of silverware. United face two crucial games in four days against Liverpool at home tomorrow and in Madrid on Tuesday, which will make or break their season. Van Nistelrooy, with two goals in two games for Holland during the international week, is in blistering form and impatient to erase his feeling of failure.
Graham Hunter, The Sun

"I blew Turks kiss after sex slurs"

David Beckham admitted he blew a series of mock kisses to Turkey´s foul-mouthed players in response to taunts about his sexuality. The England skipper was targeted by the Turks throughout Wednesday´s epic 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light but kept his composure in the face of extreme verbal and physical provocation. And as he embraced Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville after converting the injury-time penalty which sealed the win, Turkey defender Umit Davala branded Beckham a homosexual. "One of their players questioned my sexuality so I just blew him a kiss," said Beckham afterwards, with a wry smile. "There was a lot of provocation out there but the England players were amazing. You´re going to get those kind of things happening in a game like that because there was a passionate atmosphere. You´re going to get involved in things, you can´t avoid that.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

"When Saturday NEVER comes"

The traditional Saturday afternoon fixture list may soon be gone forever as part of a new television deal. Sky Sports, favourites once again to win the live Premiership television rights, want to extend their deal to show even more live matches on Sundays, Monday nights and in midweek. It means Saturday fixture lists could be decimated by the new multi-million pound deal which will be thrashed out over the next couple of months. And it has left BBC director general Greg Dyke warning that they may make a drastically reduced offer for the traditional Saturday night highlights package - because there will be fewer games to show. The BBC are going all out to win back Match of the Day after losing out last time to ITV - and, incredibly, Dyke reckons they can pick up the rights for a third of what their rivals paid.
John Cross, Daily Mirror

"Owen is doubtful"

Michael Owen is struggling to be fit in time for tomorrow´s trip to Old Trafford. The Liverpool striker dashed back from England´s game against Turkey for intensive treatment on a back problem he picked up at the Stadium of Light.
Sports staff, Daily Mirror

"O´Shea fears"

John O´Shea admits it has reached win or bust time for Ireland after the 0-0 draw in Albania left them struggling to qualify for Euro 2004. Brian Kerr´s men now trail Group 10 leaders Switzerland by four points. After crashing to defeat in their opening two group games against Russia and Switzerland at the start of the season, Ireland know time is running out on their bid to book their place in Portugal 2004. O´Shea said: "Having beaten Georgia and got a good point in Albania, we´ve given ourselves a chance again, but we have to win our next two games to stay in touch now."

=>HEAD TO HEAD NOTES

Liverpool will square the head-to-head totals at 49 League wins each if they claim maximum points for the third season in succession over United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will be keen to avenge the Worthington Cup Final defeat one month ago.

The Merseysiders have lost just one of their last five top flights visits to United.

United´s last home League win over ´Pool was 2-0 on 24 September, 1998 when Denis Irwin from the spot, and Paul Scholes were on target.

Having won the reverse fixture 1-2 in December, United are in line to complete a first ´double´ in six seasons, second in the Premiership against them and eighth since League conflict commenced 1895.

"MOST SIGNIFICANT STATS"

Liverpool make the short journey to what has become a happy hunting ground. They take on arch rivals Manchester United in search of a sensational third consecutive Premiership win at Old Trafford. While United are vying for their 50th League win over the Merseysiders, should Liverpool pull it off the head-to-head League totals would then be neck and neck at 49 wins a piece.

The seven-times champions get a second successive early opportunity to steal a march on the Premiership summit with this mouth watering Saturday lunchtime showdown against the Worthington Cup winners. This is their third meeting this season and first since the Merseysiders 2-0 victory at the Millennium Stadium, when goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen made it honours even this term.

United beat Fulham in their most recent outing a fortnight ago to go top of the table for the first time in exactly a year. But Arsenal regained the leadership 27 hours later with victory over Everton. Sir Alex Ferguson´s side stand just two points behind the Gunners going into this game, which will end half an hour or so before Arsenal and Aston Villa kick off at Villa Park.

The Red Devils are striving for a fourth successive League win following successes over Leeds ( 2-1 h, 5 Mar), Aston Villa ( 0-1 a, 15 Mar) and Fulham ( 3-0 h, 22 Mar). They´re unbeaten in 11 Premiership games, having won nine and drawn two since losing 3-1 at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day. The Old Trafford club have not lost a League game in front of their home fans since the 0-1 embarrassment by Bolton on 11 September. Subsequently United have won 11 and drawn 2 in the Theatre of Dreams.

The defeat by the Trotters saw the Champions League Quarter-finalists slump to a season-low ninth. They have slowly climbed since with the aid of 13 wins in 17 Premiership encounters, a mere two defeats in 18, and the meanest top flight defence that has leaked just 27 goals in 31 games.

United head the Premiership´s Current Form table, and in Ruud van Nistelrooy boast the top division´s most prolific scorer in League and Cup clashes. The Dutch wizard has scored 32 goals, 15 of which have been in the Premiership, including his hat trick against Fulham in United´s most recent game.

Liverpool are also chasing a fourth top flight maximum on the bounce, in the wake of victories over Bolton ( 2-0 h, 8 Mar), Spurs ( 2-3 a, 16 Mar) and Leeds ( 3-1 h, 23 Mar).

Although ultimately unsuccessful in Europe with the tame defeat by Celtic in the Uefa Cup, Gerard Houlier´s side seem to have overcome their blip in the Premiership. One defeat in nine and the best tally of away wins in the top flight ( 7), have seen Liverpool return to the top five for the first time this year and in contention for that top four Champions League qualifying berth. They stand four points behind Chelsea, who currently hold the spot.

Danny Murphy, who´s set to make his 300th club career start, scored the winner in both of Liverpool´s recent victories at Old Trafford. Team mate Michael Owen needs four more goals to reach a century in the Premiership.

The Red Devils are hoping to complete a fourth ´double´ of the season having already taken six points off West Brom, Southampton and Birmingham. Liverpool are out to avoid being ´doubled´ for the first time in this campaign.

United are embarking on a three-match sequence that will make or break their ambitions for a 15th English League Championship. After this, they go to third placed Newcastle on 12 April and then on the following Wednesday face the what´s set to be the crunch title decider at Arsenal.

Liverpool entertain Fulham on 12 April, before going across the city for the season´s second Merseyside derby with Everton on the following Saturday.

"GIGGS WANTS TO SAY "

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

There are only so many ways he can say this

Giggs is quoted in the Sun as saying:

"I have a long time to go on my contract and I want to end
my career at Old Trafford."

( Red Issue)

"BEAT THE SCOUSERS"

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

And go from there

Phil Neville was looking forward to the game on MUTV:

"In terms of the rivalry between the teams, Liverpool is the
biggest game on the football calendar in England and it
should be another exciting match,

"Apart from our victory in November, our results against
them haven´t been too clever. We must do better tomorrow
because we need three points.

"If we win all our remaining league games we will overhaul
Arsenal and win it. That has to be our aim, so there is no
way we can even afford to draw.´´

=>interview de Rio.........

"RIO IS STILL SETTLING IN " ( Red Issue)

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

United are different than any other team

Rio has had a mixed start to his United career but he still
feels that he is in a settling in period:

"It takes a long time,

"On the pitch you´ve got to get used to playing with your
new team-mates and off it, it´s new surroundings and new
people.

"It´s been stop-start because I have had a few injuries,
which I´ve never suffered from before, but since the turn of
the year I´ve played a number of games in quick succession
which has helped a lot."

Ferdinand has found a difference in expectations at United
compared to other clubs:

"The big difference about being here, compared to West Ham
in particular, is that if you were playing away at Liverpool
or Arsenal you´d be delighted to get a draw.

"Here, we go to win every game and if you come away with a
draw, you take it as two points lost.

"Also, you rarely catch teams on an off-day. They always
come highly motivated and play to the best of their ability.

"They raise their game against us and you have to be able to
deal with it.

"Having said that, I didn´t expect playing for United to be
a bed of roses. I knew I was joining a club where not
winning anything is regarded as a big disappointment."

Looking back at the Worthington Cup Final, Rio feels we were
unlucky not to win:

"Liverpool had a bit of luck that day, although in the first
half we played in front of them too much.

"The second half was more open but they kept fairly solid
and their goalkeeper made the difference. It just wasn´t our
day."

------------------------------------------------

=>une interview de Ruud.......

"RUUD WANTS IT ALL" ( Red Issue)

Story by Editor 4 April 2003

Goals, wins, trophies

Van Nistelrooy, interviewed in the Sun, said:

"I want to win everything possible with United and I think
we are en route to doing that.

"We can win both these tournaments - and it is only the
great teams who can say that.”

He also wants to continue his impressive personal record:

"I want to make history at Old Trafford and, now I´ve scored
more than 50 times with United, I reckon that I will score
100. But what I really want is to get at least 150 goals or
more.

"For a foreign player to score that many times with
Manchester United would be a truly remarkable achievement.

"What happened to us last season was a total sickener for me
because I´m not used to a season finishing without a trophy
- and it felt bad.

"For the moment, Arsenal are the Premiership leaders but I´m
hopeful that the pressure will get to them."

Ruud also feels that we have a good chance of winning the
European Cup this season:

"We won´t discard the chance of winning one trophy because
of the importance of another one - but we must not pass up
the European chance presented to us this season.

"Our great objective is to get to the Champions League
final, play for it at our own magnificent ground and win
it."
