Reds goalkeeping coach Tony Coton believes United have acquired a cross between Bruce Grobbelaar and Peter Schmeichel in new keeper Tim Howard.

And Coton, who has tracked the 24-year-old USA stopper since he was in America´s Under-20 side, is confident Howard can become better than both his countrymen - Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel - who already play Premiership football.

" In terms of his ability, agility and his quickness, I’d liken him to a very young Bruce Grobbelaar," TC said in a ManUtd.com interview. " Obviously that´s without all the eccentricity and the flamboyant mistakes," he added reassuringly.

The Reds’ goalkeeping coach was first to spot Howard playing in the Pan-American games four years ago in Canada. And, according to Coton, another striking goalkeeping likeness can be made with a United legend.

" He reminds me a lot of Peter Schmeichel,” Tony told us. “I know the fans will be pleased to hear that. I’m not saying he’s ‘The New Peter Schmeichel’ – he’s Tim Howard.”

Such glowing consent of Tim Howard’s abilities mean the American comes to Old Trafford very highly rated indeed.

But Tim Howard isn’t at Old Trafford to fill Schmeichel’s boots. He’s here to create a reputation of his own, and according to the player himself, that will come through hard work.

" If I try to be like Peter Schmeichel I am sure I will fail miserably," Tim said. " I just want to be who I am. I will pick from Peter´s game and his qualities, as I already have tried, and combine them with mine.”

A sentiment very much afforded by Tony Coton. He said: “Tim will be playing on a stage that befits his talent. And once he starts putting in performances for United, the rest of the world will sit up and realise what a talented goalkeeper this boy is.”

Les divers protagonistes du transfert marathon du champion du monde brésilien du Paris SG, Ronaldinho, ont décidé de s´accorder un week-end de trêve avant de reprendre et éventuellement conclure les négociations lundi.

Les dernières négociations avec Manchester United, l´un des deux seuls candidats encore en lice pour l´achat du joueur avec le FC Barcelone, se sont terminées tard dans la soirée de jeudi à vendredi. Elles ont débouché sur l´envoi d´une nouvelle proposition par fax vendredi matin, qui ne semblerait pas devoir faire évoluer sensiblement le dossier.

D´autre part, même si la date butoir qu´il avait fixée à mercredi dernier est largement dépassée, le président du FC Barcelone, Joan Laporta, est resté en contact avec celui du PSG, Francis Graille. Il lui a confirmé ses dernières offres, à hauteur d´environ 30 millions d´euros.

De son côté, Roberto Assis, frère et agent de Ronaldinho, aurait une nouvelle fois confirmé vendredi au PSG que le joueur était aussi bien disposé à évoluer à Manchester qu´à Barcelone.

Ronaldinho, pour sa part, était toujours à Porto Alegre vendredi matin, où il s´informe régulièrement de l´évolution des négociations avant de se replonger dans ses vacances prolongées.

En effet, le Brésilien, attendu le 10 juillet au stage d´avant-saison du PSG à Aix-les-Bains ( Savoie), ne s´y était pas présenté, ce qui lui a valu de voir son contrat suspendu par le club parisien.

Le président du PSG, très attaché à défendre les intérêts de son club, a définitivement renoncé à conserver Ronaldinho dans son effectif, devant l´incapacité du Real Madrid à lui fournir des garanties sur un engagement différé du joueur pour la saison 2004-05, solution initialement proposée par le champion d´Espagne.

Francis Graille se donne donc le week end pour prendre la meilleure décision au regard des intérêts de son club

C´est quoi que Ronaldinho va faire à Barcelona qui n´a meme pas gagner 1 trophée en 4 ans.De plus , Francis Graille est fou s´il accepte l´offre du Barca car c´est sur qu´il n´ont pas les 30 million D´euro car il ont meme pas voulu payer un bonus a Kluivert.

Campo a enfin signé a Bolton, sinon toujours pas de Kleberson, foutu permis de travail !

Je suis sur que Ronnie ne veut pas aller au Barca car il ne voudra pas jouer contre ces amis du real madrid.

" Duff faces tough decisions"

Duff is unlikely to rush into a decision

Damien Duff´s adviser has said that any decision to move from Blackburn to Chelsea will be made for footballing reasons.

But Pat Devlin added that if Manchester United pursued the Republic of Ireland player with the same vigour, Duff would be on his way to Old Trafford.

" Manchester United have been playing around with the Ronaldinho thing a lot," admitted Devlin.

" But if they put the same effort into signing Damien I´m sure he would be on his way to America with them by now.

" They are a fantastic club with a fantastic manager but now we really need to consider all of our options."

After a week of wrangling, Blackburn and Chelsea agreed a fee of £17m on Thursday, paving the way for Duff to negotiate personal terms with the London club.
