Becks: I had to say yes to Real
David Beckham last night said he simply could not refuse to join Real Madrid. Beckham, 28, left Manchester United in a £25million, four-year deal that will earn him £120,000 a week. And the England skipper insisted: " I recognise this is an amazing opportunity for me at this stage in my career and a unique and exciting experience for my family."

It takes a special talent to leave Sir Bobby Charlton open-mouthed in amazement but the Manchester United-daft youngster from East London managed it. The kid was an 11-year-old David Beckham and he had just achieved the highest points total at Charlton´s Soccer Skills Tournament. His prize was a trip to Spain, to train with the nation´s champion youth team - Barcelona. How ironic that, some 17 years later, he would snub the chance to return, in favour of joining their deadliest rivals.

Real Madrid admit they do not yet know where they are going to play David Beckham - or if he will even get into the team. Bernabeu bigwigs were crowing last night after clinching the England skipper´s signature and insisted: The best just got better. But Jorge Valdano, the club´s director of sport, declared: " We are delighted with David´s arrival. It´s a strategic signing. He enhances our brand name. However I´m sure that Figo will always play next season so the question now is, where does Beckham play?" And Becks would have been horrified to hear manager Vicente Del Bosque confirm: " It is far too soon to try and say where Beckham will play. We will have to wait and see."

The world hasn´t ended
It was the third minute of injury-time and David Beckham was preparing to take a free-kick in front of the Stretford End. It was ominously close to the spot from which he had struck home the equaliser that had flown past the Greek goalkeeper and earned England automatic qualification for the 2002 World Cup. Two seasons on and the Champions League semi- final between Manchester United and Real Madrid was deadlocked. Goalless at the Bernabeu a fortnight earlier, both defences had still to be breached at Old Trafford. Beckham, sporting his new Don King hairstyle, wiped his hands on the famous white shirt, did that little half turn of his and ran towards the ball. It curled in a familiar arc round the United wall, away from the stranded Fabien Barthez and into the net. Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo and Figo all gave chase but Beckham was away, going hell for leather towards the halfway line. He stopped in front of Alex Ferguson in the United dug-out, whipped off his jersey and 500 million TV viewers were treated to a close-up of the message on his T-shirt. You ****.

Tosh: Bern ´em up Becks
David Beckham has made the greatest decision of his life by agreeing to join Real Madrid, according to John Toshack. Tosh, who twice managed the Spanish giants, insists Becks will quickly forget the heartbreak of leaving his beloved Old Trafford when he discovers what life is all about at the Bernabeu. And the Welshman insisted: " If you get the opportunity to join Real, nobody in their right mind says no. It is debatable which is the biggest club in the world - but it is hardly a retrograde step to leave United for Real. Manchester United will move swiftly to fill the void left by David Beckham by completing the £10million signing of Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho. With the funds from the sale of Beckham now in place, Sir Alex Ferguson will also step up his efforts to land Leeds striker Harry Kewell and goalkeeper Paul Robinson, plus Auxerre defender Phillipe Mexes. Beckham became a Real Madrid player last night after United finally agreed an £25million deal to take him to the Bernabeu Stadium. Beckham´s move has now cleared the way for United to complete the signing of Ronaldinho, who sank England with his goal in last summer´s World Cup quarter-finals. Fergie is also ready to snatch Kewell, whose move to Arsenal has run into trouble over the Australian´s £70,000-a-week pay demands.

Real players hit out at Becks
David Beckham looks to be walking into a hostile and suspicious atmosphere at Real Madrid. Far from being regarded as the most exotic addition so far to the superstar line-up at the Bernabeu, it appears the Real players doubt the Englishman´s ability. Heart-throb Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas - a favourite with the club´s women fans - has already openly questioned whether Beckham is more style than substance. And other team-mates have also asked where Beckham will fit into the team, given the highly-regarded Portugal international Luis Figo occupies the position where the new boy is most effective, wide on the right.

Manchester United lost a fine player last night. Their fans lost a hero. The Premiership lost an icon. But most importantly of all, a group of young millionaire players at Old Trafford lost one of their best friends. When Sir Alex Ferguson sold David Beckham to Real Madrid last night, he broke up a band of brothers. Forget the idea of Beckham as a strutting individual who cared nothing for less glamorous team-mates. That impression is utterly false. The reality is Beckham was part of a tight-knit group of pals who stuck together through everything and who revelled in each other´s company.

Laporta hits the wall
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had to admit defeat in his bid to sign David Beckham last night. " Beckham´s representatives presented an unscalable wall,´´ said Laporta. " We were given the news since this evening.´´ Laporta, whose successful election campaign was based around a promise to sign the England captain, had earlier given him until the end of the week to agree to join. But Beckham - and his agents SFX - made it clear he will not talk to Laporta, who yesterday made one last plea fruitless plea. Before missing out to Real Madrid, Laporta tried to lure Beckham by vowing to make him central to the club´s plans to recapture their glories of old.
