"Ruud plays down his wonder goal "

Ruud van Nistelrooy has played down his incredible solo goal against Fulham on Saturday, claiming he´s scored better ones in the past!

Sir Alex Ferguson has said his run from inside his own half and clever finish make it one of the best goals in United history, but Ruud insists there are more to come.

"Yes, I´ve scored better!" he told MUTV after the match.

"It was one of my best - I just got the ball and dribbled and dribbled and got my way through and was lucky enough to finish it too. I knew that I was in front of a few but I saw spaces and went for them. You don´t think what you´re doing," he said by way of explanation to us mere mortals.

A combination of factors helped Ruud to complete his hat-trick at a sunsoaked Old Trafford, and he wishes every match could be like that.

"It was an amazing day - the weather was great, the atmosphere was fantastic, the pitch was great - what more could you want? We played fine and won 3-0, it was just one of those days when you´re delighted to play football," he said.

United eventually came out of their shells in the second half of the Fulham match to wrap up victory, and Ruud reckons the Reds will have to be at the top of their game for the remainder of the season.

"I thought that after the break we were going backwards too much and they had a good spell. I was happy to get the second and that killed the game," he said.

"We realise that we have a difficult programme. We´ve got to go to Newcastle and Arsenal, and we´ve got Liverpool here so we´ve got the toughest programme. But if we´re at our best we can do it.

"It will be a hell of a three weeks - but the best three weeks of the season."

"Supervan"

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Ruud van Nistelrooy as the ultimate goalscoring machine after the Dutchman´s hat-trick took Manchester Utd to the top of the Premiership for the first time in a year. United´s defeat of Fulham put the Reds a point clear of faltering Arsenal and cranked up the pressure on the Gunners ahead of their clash with Everton at Highbury today. It took van Nistelrooy´s goal tally for the season to 32 and he´s now scored 68 in 92 United appearances. But it was the Dutchman´s second goal, that had Fergie in raptures. He said: "I thought it was one of the best goals in the history of this club. Ruud is a marvellous striker. He is so accurate. You won´t see a better goal that his second one - full of courage, determination, drive and speed."

"Red van man in top gear"

They reside at the Theatre of Dreams, but Manchester United are dealing in reality these days as Arsenal start to regret their own flights of fantasy. Ruud van Nistelrooy´s hat-trick apart, this wasn´t United operating in top form. Instead, it was a perfect demonstration of why Fergie is happy to let Arsene Wenger get caught up in his quest to produce total football while United concentrate themselves on carrying off the title spoils. Efficient rather than exciting, pragmatic rather than pulsating. This was United grinding out the result they knew would carry them back to the top of the Premiership for the first time in a year and, subsequently, cranking the pressure right up on the misfiring Gunners. And if Arsenal lose for a third successive time when they face Everton at Highbury today, this could just prove to be the defining weekend of the title race.

"It´s Becks for Real"

David Beckham could be on his way to Real Madrid at the end of the season. That´s the view of Manchester United´s Spanish goalkeeper Ricardo. The keeper said yesterday on Spanish radio, "David would be the icing on the cake for Madrid. The other day he asked me what the lifestyle is like compared to England and various other little details. He also asked me, ´Ricardo, is it true that there are fantastic shops in Madrid?´"

"Duff the new Ryan"

Ryan Giggs will leave Manchester United this summer, and Damien Duff has been targeted as his replacement. United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has decided he will listen to offers for the Welsh winger. And Sport of the World can reveal he has earmarked Duff, 24, as his £10 million replacement even though the Blackburn star snubbed United six months ago.

"Stubbs: Moyes is a champion"

He may be as blue as the Everton shirt he treasures, but when Alan Stubbs talks about David Moyes putting Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson in the shade it´s hard not to accuse him of Goodison bias. Wenger stands on the threshold of history as Arsenal chase a second successive Double, while Fergie may be destined for the ultimate Champions League homecoming with United. But while the fans of Highbury and Old Trafford wouldn´t expect anything less, the renaissance of Everton under Moyes this season has been perhaps more spectacular then anything on show in north London or south Manchester.
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

"Giggs so much happier leading from the front"

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United´s return to the summit of English football after an absence of nearly a year could prove vital as the title race enters the crucial run-in. Although the elation of reclaiming top spot will be brief if Arsenal beat Everton at Highbury today, Giggs believes their rivals´ inconsistency of late could hand United a psychological boost as the title race hits the home turn. "The most important thing is to concentrate on your own performances and not worry about other teams´ results which you have no control over," said Giggs. "But in my experience it´s how you handle indifferent results and disappointments, and how teams chasing you react to them. In that respect, we´ve been there before and if Arsenal slip up we will take advantage."

Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

"Zidane: Bring on United"

Zinedine Zidane is relishing the prospect of taking on Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. But the French star refuses to write off United´s chances of reaching the last four at the Spanish side´s expense. Excitement at the draw has spread through the Real ranks, but Zidane says Madrid will have to be at their best to overcome United and claims they already have a psychological advantage going into the two-legged tie. "The excitement of facing Manchester United is there, but at the same time it´s a game we cannot afford to lose. Ideally, it was the final most people wanted but prior to the draw everyone was excited at the prospect of playing them. On our day we are capable of beating anyone but I still feel they have a slight advantage playing the first leg at the Bernabeu Stadium."
Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

One of United´s greatest goals, beams Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson last night hailed "one of the greatest goals in Manchester United´s history" as Ruud van Nistelrooy´s hat-trick took the Reds to the top of the Premiership. The goal-hungry Dutchman devoured Fulham with a treble to take his season´s tally to 32 - and then lapped up the praise for his stunning solo second strike after 68 minutes. Van Nistelrooy beat half the Fulham team with a powerful run from the half-way line before steering the ball beyond Maik Taylor to send Old Trafford - and Ferguson - into raptures. "Ruud is a marvellous striker and he´s so accurate," bubbled Fergie. "His second will be a talking point - you won´t see a better goal than that this weekend."

"John plays Dads United!"

Cold Feet´s John Thomson and soccer star Paul Scholes were dads united when they bumped into each other last week. Manchester United ace Scholes, loaded down with shopping, met Thomson and fiancee Sam Sharp as they pushed their baby Olivia. And moody Thomson, 33, who played Man U fan Pete Gifford in the ITV drama, looked on as dad-of-two Scholes and his blonde wife Clare couldn´t resist playing with four-month-old Olivia. Self-confessed booze addict Thomson carried a can of soft drink rather than his preferred lager as they met in Manchester city centre.

=>la reaction de Sir Alex........

"Fergie´s View: Fulham reaction "

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke to the press after the Premiership clash with Fulham.

This is what the boss had to say…

Great game
"It was an interesting game. Fulham are a very good football side but I think equally so we played some fantastic football ourselves. Good composure in the first half we were patient and we took our time. In the second half once we got the second goal we became a bit courageous which is understandable in some ways and surrendered the ball in a bit of territory to Fulham. The important thing was we never lost a goal and that was very good.’

Van Nistelrooy’s performance
"What a fantastic goal I don’t think you will see a better one today - a marvellous goal. He has been very fresh from a week’s training and I think the ones who weren’t in Spain showed that today."

Top of the table
"That’s where you want to be coming to the most important part of the season. I hope we can stay there. I think that we have a good chance. The players´ character is helping, you saw that today with a good determination and resilience about them, so hopefully its going to be exciting times."

Pressure on Arsenal
"I think there is pressure on everyone at the top. Newcastle, you have got to remember, they are on that inside rail and you have got to be careful of them. But I think the most important thing for us is to keep on doing our job and I think we are doing that well now."

Important matches
"You want to be the best side in the country, to play in these games and whoever wins the championship has to be the best. We´re not favourites but we have a good chance. We´re showing that in our performances and I think that’s where the tell tale signs are. Teams´ performances at this time of the year are paramount and I am pleased with my own players."

Injuries
"Wes Brown and John O’Shea have both been feeling their hamstring today but we took a risk with Wes Brown today because I wouldn’t have played him. My intention was to play Roy Keane at centre back - he had trained all week but he felt it yesterday and we couldn´t really take the risk on him today."

Wes out for England?
"Well I will have to speak to Sven and it will be their decision."

"Never more United " ( !!!!)
David Beckham has slammed rumours of a player rift splitting Manchester United. An off-field love triangle which saw Ryan Giggs and Dave Gardner, who is Beckham´s best pal, swap ex-girlfriends threatened the friendship of all three. It was alleged Beckham and Phil Neville had snubbed the Welsh winger. But Becks, speaking after Saturday´s 3-0 trouncing of Fulham, declared: "What happens outside the game doesn´t affect what we think of each other. What people have to try to remember is that most of us have been together for 10 years. We know each other inside out. Rumours never upset us."
Neil Custis, The Sun

=>plus serieux...mais tjrs le "sun"!
"Old way is the best"
Every club struggling for success should realise it does not come overnight as proved by Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. When Fergie took over Manchester United were a massive club but were drifting without any sense of purpose or direction. He laid the foundations with the youth team, which became a conveyor belt of top talent. They were the bricks of future success, not the sand some have attempted to build on. Leeds had a set of youngsters coming through but those crown jewels have been sold to bail them out of the financial mire. Just imagine if United had cashed in by selling David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs early in their development - where would they be now? United have built steadily and relied on home-grown products, although their success since then has allowed them to be one of the biggest players in the transfer market. How Leeds must wish they had followed that lead as they have gone from Champions League to champions, flirting with relegation.
Tony Gale, The Sun

Man Utd 3 Fulham 0
Alex Ferguson believes it is all in Manchester United´s own hands. Close. In fact it is in the feet of Ruud van Nistelrooy as to what the Reds´ ultimate destiny will be this season. Without him United are a great team with no cutting edge. With him they have the ability to achieve an incredible double this season of title and European Cup. In the next month we will know whether Van Nistelrooy is a good striker or a true god of the game. In that time he will shoot it out against Michael Owen ( Apr 5), Alan Shearer ( Apr 12), Thierry Henry ( Apr 15) and Raul ( Apr 8/23) - arguably four of the top 10 strikers in the world. Van Nistelrooy said: "It will be a hell of a three weeks - but the best three weeks of the season." But what should give Van Nistelrooy the edge over the aforementioned hotshots? Ability certainly puts him alongside them all. But it is the Dutchman´s overwhelming desire to win a major trophy with United that could give him the edge.
Neil Custis, The Sun

=>Vieira papers over the cracks
When your nerves nerves are shredded, you need a real man to stand up and be counted. Thankfully for Arsenal, Patrick Vieira is such a man and it was the skipper who banished the mood of impending misery at Highbury to prove the Gunners do have what it takes. The pressure that Manchester United have been slowly applying seemed to be having its effect once again after another moment of Wayne Rooney magic, at the end of a week that saw Arsenal crack at Blackburn and in Valencia. Arsenal´s tendency to over-elaborate looked set to cost them dear again as they failed to add to the much-derided Pascal Cygan´s first goal for the club.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Ruud’s awakening
Sir Alex Ferguson has for years placed his faith in the spirit of the collective, but the Manchester United manager is not blind to the value of individual genius. The most notable example, of course, is that revered French forward Eric Cantona, but there have been others, such as Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and, at one stage, Ryan Giggs. As the contest for the Premiership title for 2003 approaches a gripping conclusion, Ferguson can rest assured that he has another outstanding star.
Ian Ladyman, Daily Mail

Ruud provides Cantona spark
Ruud van Nistelrooy answered club captain Roy Keane’s call for a player the magic touch, while providing his manager with further proof of his development as a striker. Keane admitted a few weeks ago that Manchester United were lacking someone with Eric Cantona’s ability to change a game with a single touch of brilliance – but van Nistelrooy showed he can be that player with a goal that was as unexpected as it was crucial.
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Van in the middle – Ruud still has an eye for the goals
By any standard, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s scoring to Manchester United is remarkable. The rampaging Dutchman took his total for this season to 32 with the hat-trick that created a scoreline which was harsh on Fulham. With seven league matches to play, plus the quarter finals of the Champions League, the Van Man is on course to better his 35-goal total in his first season.
Bill Thornton, Daily Star
