Mak attack
Roy Makaay has emerged as a top Manchester United target as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to spend the £30million windfall he expects to receive from the sale of David Beckham. The Deportivo la Coruna star is available for around £10million, and MEN Sport believes he is a back-up in case the purchase of Ronaldinho falls through.
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

The Fergie factor
Manchester United have sparked Britain´s soccer sale of the century for one reason alone . .. because boss Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced it is in the club´s interest to cash in on the England skipper. It can be revealed that while there has be a deterioration of the working relationship of Becks and his manager, what really antagonised the Reds´ hierarchy was an apparent indication from the player´s advisers that he would not sign a new contract.
Peter Spencer, Manchester Evening News

They haven´t spoken to David for two months . .. I can´t believe they would do this to him
David Beckham´s father said today that the rift between his son and Sir Alex Ferguson was so wide the pair had not spoken properly for two months. " I can´t believe that the club is doing this to him," he said. " It´s ridiculous that all this happens to him just because Ferguson doesn´t like him any more. David doesn´t want to go. What Fergie has done for David over the years has been marvellous, helping his career develop, but now it´s terrible what´s going on."
Peter Spencer, Manchester Evening News

Barn with a rich harvest
If David Beckham does up sticks and go to Spain, his move is likely to mean one more exclusive des res coming onto the Cheshire market. He would no longer have need of a North West base, and " Beckham´s barn", the £1.3million conversion in Nether Alderley he and Victoria moved into last year would be surplus to requirements.

Father Ted: Stay in Manchester, my son
Ted Beckham says his son should resist the efforts of ‘a certain person ( who) wants him to go’ and stay in Manchester. Beckham senior was disappointed that United accepted a bid from Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta for his superstar son. But despite a move abroad looking increasingly likely for the England captain, father Ted has urged him to stay with the club that has helped turn him from a wide-eyed kid into a global brand name. “I don’t want him to go,” he said. “I shall tell him not to go there. I want him to stay at Manchester United.”
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

Antic blows cold on Becks deal
Barcelona coach Raddy Antic believes David Beckham would be a great ‘marketing tool’, but is less sure what the England captain would offer on the pitch for the Catalan giants. Beckham could move to the Nou Camp after yesterday’s news that Manchester United had accepted a bid from Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta. But Antic, whose own future is largely dependent on the election, has moved to distance himself from the bid for the 28-year-old. " He is a player with a capacity for doing good things and bad things," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

Laporta rival´s Ruud intentions
A second Barcelona presidential candidate has turned his jealous eye towards Manchester, with Josep Martinez Rovira promising to bring Ruud van Nistelrooy to the Nou Camp should he be elected. United have accepted a bid for David Beckham from Rovira’s rival Joan Laporta, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that Ruud van Nistelrooy is not for sale at any price. However Rovira is confident that he can bring the Dutch international to Spain to team-up with international strike partner Patrick Kluivert. " If I am successful, we will have the best number nine in the world," he said at a press conference. " That is none other than Ruud van Nistelrooy."
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

Go . .. or rot
David Beckham has been told to join Barcelona or rot on the Manchester United bench. Beckham was stunned last night to find the Premiership champions had accepted a bid from the Spaniards´ presidential favourite Joan Laporta. The bid is for a basic £24million, rising to £30m based on Barca´s success while Beckham is there. But SFX, the player´s representatives, said in a statement: " David is very disappointed and surprised to learn of this and feels he is being used as a political pawn in the Barcelona presidential elections."
Neil Custis, The Sun

We´ll make you Barca mad
The man masterminding Joan Laporta´s swoop for David Beckham last night promised: Give us 24 hours and we´ll make him Barcelona-crazy! Midfielder Becks, 28, and his advisors have reservations about a move from Manchester United to the Nou Camp. But Sandro Rosell, who has been negotiating a deal with Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon, is confident he can change the England skipper´s mind. Businessman Rosell, who helped make the 1992 Barcelona Olympics such a success, declared: " If he comes to speak to us and we show him the city, the people, the club, our plans, the beach and the beautiful mountains then it will take no more than 24 hours to convince him that Barcelona is the place to live and play football."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Time´s right to cash in
Manchester United´s declaration that they are ready to sell David Beckham makes, on the surface, a lot of sense. The only surprise is that almost nine out of 10 Sun readers believe he should stay at Old Trafford. We can only presume they are voting with their hearts and not their heads. But that is the way Beckham grabs you. At the same time, it would be fascinating to discover the outcome of another poll, one that asks: Who should go - Becks or Alex Ferguson? That really would test loyalty. For the last two seasons, I have advocated the offloading of the England skipper if United want to recapture the European Cup. The lack of pace down the right, the vulnerability of the same flank to opposition attacks and the ease with which Beckham has been closed down by the top continental sides. There are more than enough reasons for Ferguson to decide the time has come to cash in on Barcelona´s £24million offer.
Steven Howard, The Sun

Real Madrid bid for Becks
Real Madrid last night sparked the biggest transfer battle in football history with a secret £25million bid for David Beckham. Real made their move after United´s decision to accept Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta´s £22m offer for the England captain, provided he wins Sunday´s election. Daily Mirror Sport can reveal Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club´s sporting director Jorge Valdano met yesterday to finalise the details of their swoop. Beckham has dismissed Barca´s interest and told his advisers that Real are the club he wants to join.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

This is the team Beckham really wants
The Nou Camp may have been the scene of the greatest moment in David Beckham´s illustrious career, but he has decided it is the No Camp when it comes to deciding where his future lies. Beckham has fond memories of the balmy May night in 1999 when he and his Manchester United team-mates won the Champions League final in dramatic style to complete an unprecedented Treble. But although United have publicly accepted Barcelona´s £22million bid for Beckham, the England skipper has made it clear to those close to him there is only one club he will join - Real Madrid.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Becks fury at £25m Barca deal
David Beckham reacted furiously last night after Manchester United agreed to sell him to Spanish club Barcelona for £25m. The England skipper feels he has been ‘sold like a slave’ by the club while he is in America. The Premiership champions announced on their club website that they have accepted a bid from Barcelona’s presidential election candidate Joan Laporta.

Fergie gets his own Beck
David Beckham’s Manchester United career was ended last night by a terse statement on the club website. What a disgraceful way to treat a loyal servant, let alone the England captain. Sir Alex Ferguson appears to have finally got his ultimate revenge on a player who dared to become bigger than the manager himself. No other club in the world would treat the captain of their country in such a way. But it is a sign United and Fergie’s warped mentality that they are forcing Beckham out of the door.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Dad’s plea: Don’t go, son
Ted Beckham has urged his son to stay at Manchester United – and fired a thinly-disguised broadside at boss Sir Alex Ferguson. “I don’t want him to go just because a certain person wants him to go,” admitted Becks snr last night, in what could be interpreted as a blast at Fergie.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Irwin warns pal about a switch to Barcelona
Denis Irwin told David Beckham last night to be wary about a move to Barcelona. Former Manchester United star Irwin said: “I’m not sure if they are the right club for him. They aren’t in the Champions League and they’re even struggling to qualify for next season’s Uefa Cup.”
Sports staff, The Sun

McGrath: Fergie lost patience with his celebrity lifestyle
Former Manchester United star Paul McGrath believes David Beckham has brought about his own downfall at Old Trafford by allowing his celebrity lifestyle to affect his form on the pitch. United have admitted they are ready to sell Beckham by accepting Barcelona´s £22m bid for the England skipper. McGrath claims Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has lost patience with him. " David Beckham is now a very big celebrity and Sir Alex Ferguson maybe feels the off-field activities have interfered."
Steve Rogers, Daily Mirror

Lineker: Laporta using our Becks as his vote winner
Gary Lineker last night told David Beckham he would be taking the biggest gamble of his career by joining Barcelona. Lineker endured a nightmare when he joined Barcelona after the 1986 World Cup and fears Beckham could be heading for a similar fate. Lineker said: " I think it´s a bit of a farce until Joan Laporta wins the election. There are too many ifs and buts. It will be hard for David, but at least he has the right sort of people to advise him. The deal is a long way off and still needs a lot of thought."
John Cross, Daily Mirror

Scholes wants goals
Paul Scholes is desperate to score against Slovakia tonight to repay Sven Goran Eriksson for sticking by him during the worst goal drought of his England career. It is two years since Scholes last scored for his country and the Manchester United midfielder admitted he wants to thank Eriksson with a goal at the Riverside. " It´s been a long time since I scored for England," said Scholes. " I do think about it a lot because in my mind I am a goalscorer."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

I won´t be treated like a pawn
Manchester United and David Beckham were at war last night after the club announced they had sold him to Barcelona, subject to several contractual strings. Beckham, still on his working break to the United States, saying he had been used as a " political pawn" in the Barcelona presidential race. And he said he had no plans to meet Joan Laporta, the man who hopes to be elected president of Barcelona on Sunday night on the back of his promise to sign the England captain.
Harry Harris - " The man who broke the story", it wasn´t on ManUtd.com at 15:15 yesterday then?

Why Ferguson knows best
Arguably Sir Alex Ferguson´s greatest quality is his refusal to allow sentiment to cloud his cold-eyed judgement on any football matters. It is what marks him down as so different from Sir Matt Busby, whose indulgence in the players that first brought the European Cup to Manchester United in 1968 helped send George Best off the rails and was a huge factor in the club suffering the ignominy of relegation six years later.
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Just forget it
David Beckham last night told Manchester United that he will not be railroaded into moving to Barcelona. The England captain’s public humiliation at the hands of the Premiership champions was compounded yesterday when United announced that they had accepted an offer from Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta, understood to be worth an initial £22million. By revealing they have struck a deal with a man who will not know until an election on Sunday if he has even won control at the Nou Camp, United have widened further the rift between themselves and Beckham.
Ian Ladyman, Daily Mail

Final humiliation for the England captain
When David Beckham eventually sits down with his advisers he will be looking at options that are as straightforward as a stroll through the Hampton Court maze. Manchester United’s desperate attempt to trigger an auction will merely serve to harden the determination of his consultants to make life difficult for the Old Trafford hierarchy. SFX, the company who handle Beckham, have made it quite clear they have no intention of talking with Barcelona’s Joan Laporta, the presidential candidate who thinks acceptance of his offer by United chief executive Peter Kenyon means business can proceed.
Steve Curry, Daily Mail

This loyal servant should let his employers stew
David Beckham may have little chance of remaining a Manchester United player but, increasingly, he has out sympathy. News that the Old Trafford hierarchy have accepted a bid, in principle, from a man who has not yet been appointed president at Barcelona is an extraordinary development in what is becoming a most unpleasant business. If Beckham and his advisers harboured any hope of negotiating a new contract that would keep the England captain at the club he joined as a boy, the club he has supported his entire life, he may as well forget it now.
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

Ruthless Fergie
There is no sugar-coated way to say this. David Beckham isn’t leaving Manchester United because the wannabee president of an ailing Spanish club has made a bid for his services. Beckham is leaving United because Alex Ferguson wants him out. It’s as simple as that. For Beckham is the latest in a long list of players at Old Trafford to make a fatal mistake. He started to believe his own publicity. He was praised and flattered into believing that he was bigger and more important than his club and his manager. And Ferguson has ruthlessly ensured that the price Beckham will pay for blunder is his Old Trafford career. Let’s make no bones about it. Fergie’s finger-prints are daubed all over United’s decision to accept the offer from Laporta, whi is quite shamelessly using Beckham in his bid to become the next president of Barcelona Football Club.
Paul Hince, Manchester Evening News

The Real deal
Spanish newspapers agreed on one thing today – David Beckham is heading for Real Madrid. As expected, there was widespread coverage of yesterday’s significant events. But even though Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta says he has reached an agreement, the four biggest daily Spanish papers feel he is fighting a losing battle.
Dominic King, Manchester Evening News

Barca move is not cut and dry
David Beckham’s future is still up in the air this morning after 24 hours of high drama involving the England captain. Manchester United have conditionally accepted a bid for the 28-year-old midfielder from Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta and his backers. However, Beckham’s management company SFX responded by claiming the player and his representatives have no plans to meet Laporta or his associates.
Sports staff, Manchester Evening News

Sale has legends’ backing
Former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin believes the club’s admission that they are prepared to sell David Beckham was always on the cards. Irwin, who left United a year ago to join Wolves, told MUTV: “David is United through and through, he’s been around the club a long time and he won’t want to be pushed out of the club. But the manager probably wants to rebuild his squad during the summer and the chairman might say ‘you need to sell players first’ and Sir Alex has had a look around and he feels he can get the most for Becks.”
Sports staff, Manchester Evening News

Real to hijack Beckham deal
Real Madrid will open negotiations with Manchester United about the purchase of David Beckham early next week, after the results of Barcelona´s presidential election are known. The outcome should be clear on Monday and Real will then formally start their attempts to bring Beckham to the Bernabeu. They have already held informal talks with United and the England captain´s advisers and hope to conclude a deal swiftly. Real have been waiting silently in the wings while Joan Laporta, the Barcelona presidential candidate, has been talking to United about Beckham but they are confident of signing the midfielder. They are aware that Beckham has no interest in joining Barcelona, who will not play in the Champions League next season and may not even qualify for the Uefa Cup.
