" Man Utd close in on Ronaldinho deal"

Ronaldinho is on his way to Old Trafford

Manchester United are close to finalising a £9m deal for Brazil star Ronaldinho.
Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon was in France on Wednesday to conclude the deal with Paris St Germain officials.

The 23-year-old is in Brazil discussing the move with his family, but is thought to have provisionally agreed a five-year contract worth £3.2m a year.

The arrival of Ronaldinho, who will be the first Brazilian to play for the club, is likely to seal the departure of David Beckham.

Kenyon confirmed on Tuesday that he had entered negotiations with Barcelona over a £30m deal for the England captain.

And United are hoping that the Catalan club´s interest in Beckham will spark a bidding war with fierce rivals Real Madrid, who could hijack the move.

Sir Alex Ferguson, currently on holiday in southern France, was told about Wednesday´s events in Paris and would like the matter settled quickly.

PSG officials were reported as saying on Wednesday that it was " 99.9% certain Ronaldinho will leave for Manchester".

However, the French club are still clinging to the hope that their most-prized player will stay.

The Parisian side are believed to be trying to sign Portuguese striker Pauleta from Bordeaux in a bid to make the club more appealing to Ronaldinho.

And coach Vahid Halilhodzic has insisted Ronaldinho should see out the remainder of his contract, which ends in 2006.

Ronaldinho´s agent Roberto Assis, who is also his brother, told French newspaper L´Equipe on Thursday: " PSG are making efforts to keep Ronaldinho."

The capture of Ronaldinho, one of the world´s most high-profile players, would mark the end of a year-long pursuit by Ferguson.

The United manager is looking to the Brazil playmaker to provide the missing ingredient that will bring Champions League glory back to Old Trafford.

And if the move goes through, it will ease some of the disquiet among United fans, who are increasingly resigned to the idea of losing Beckham.

Red Ron: United land Brazil ace for £9m
Manchester United landed Ronaldinho for £9million last night - and signalled David Beckham´s exit from Old Trafford. United chief executive Peter Kenyon was in Paris yesterday to agree the Ronaldinho fee with Paris St Germain. And Beckham´s departure was virtually sealed as Real Madrid attempted to hijack Barcelona´s bid for the England skipper. Real president Florentino Perez tried last night to contact Beckham on holiday in America to express their interest. Perez insisted last month Real did not want Beckham - now he most definitely does.

Samba star on mission
Samba football is on its way to Old Trafford - just when David Seaman thought it was safe to head up to Manchester. Ronaldinho, the man with the flowing dark locks who famously lobbed England´s keeper during last summer´s World Cup quarter-final, will parade his skills in a Red shirt next season. Nothing could be sweeter for United fans - especially as the Brazilian dazzler signed on the same day arch-rivals City finally landed Seaman. And they will hope Ronaldinho, 23, can heap more misery on the ex-Arsenal star.

They´re forcing me out: Becks fearing axe from United
A year ago David Beckham hugged Alex Ferguson as his future at Old Trafford was sealed with a new contract. Now the pair hardly speak and it is clear that Manchester United want to sell their star name and cash in. Beckham believes he is being forced out of Manchester United. The star will be in turmoil on his American holiday as news leaks through to him that Manchester United have had meetings about his sale. SunSport reported yesterday how chief executive Peter Kenyon met with a representative of Barcelona´s president-elect Joan Laporta on Tuesday to discuss terms of a possible deal. SunSport can reveal that Beckham, 28, will now have make-or-break talks with his advisors on his return from holiday to decide if it is worth trying to stay at the club.

Beckham ready for the off
David Beckham has said for the first time he has probably played his last game for Manchester United. Beckham´s acceptance of the inevitable came as Paris St Germain agreed to sell their Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho to Old Trafford for £10million. An official announcement confirming the Ronaldinho deal is expected within the next 48 hours, after talks between United chief executive Peter Kenyon and the French club in Paris. Kenyon had admitted he has met with Barcelona officials over Beckham´s proposed sale - and yesterday the player´s advisers went a stage further. Jon Holmes, managing director of the SFX Sports Group, the company which looks after Beckham, gave the strongest hint yet the country´s most high-profile player is set to leave. SFX are effectively Beckham´s public mouthpiece and Holmes declared: " David has said he wants to stay at United. But if the club alter their view - and it needs all parties to alter their view - anything is possible."

It´s Keano the boss
It couldn´t be, it isn´t, it can´t be... it is! Yes, folks, Roy Keane is taking his first steps into management as he tries for a UEFA coaching badge. The Manchester United skipper has worked under the master himself - winning seven Premiership titles with Alex Ferguson in his 10-year career at Old Trafford. But Keane has decided even that is not enough. And this week he enrolled on a 10-day intensive residential course at Warwick University in a bid to get his UEFA B badge. Keano has not exactly got a good track record when it comes to dealing with bosses. Exactly a year ago he hit the headlines when he was booted out of Ireland´s World Cup squad following his infamous bust-up with Mick McCarthy. His other misdemeanours include a running feud with Manchester City´s Alf-Inge Haaland and constant spats with match officials. But now the boot is on the other foot as he is learning coaching techniques on a course which includes former managers.

Skipper ripper
Bryan Robson last night accused Sven Goran Eriksson of demeaning the England captain´s armband. Robson was dubbed Captain Marvel as he led his country valiantly in 65 of his 90 internationals. He was stunned as the England boss employed four different leaders during Tuesday´s friendly against Serbia and Montenegro. Original captain Michael Owen went off at half-time and the armband was passed to Emile Heskey. He was then subbed and threw the armband to Phil Neville. On his exit, Neville gave it to substitute Jamie Carragher. Robson said: " It demeans what the whole meaning of skipper is all about. I think having four captains is demeaning to the armband. I can´t imagine the public particularly like it either. Being captain of your country, as I know, is a fantastic honour but it doesn´t look very good when so many people in one game get to do it." Robson was a footballing hero who led from the front. This was a man you wanted with you in the trenches. These days, as long as you are within range of the pitch, you have a chance of leading your country. David Beckham, for instance, has the job as much for what he represents to the FA commercially as what he contributes as a leader on the field.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Farce has FA foxed
The England captaincy farce that ruined Tuesday´s friendly against Serbia has even left the FA totally foxed. With David Beckham absent, four skippers were on show but no one knows just how many players have actually donned the armband after the first-choice captain was substituted or sent off. And that means the all-time list of who has captained England - for years the subject of schoolboy quizzes - is no longer complete.
