Luc who Fergie wants
Sir Alex Ferguson wants Brazilian World Cup-winning star Lucio to strengthen his defence and boost the chances of Champions League glory. The Manchester United boss confirmed yesterday that he is looking for an experienced defender because of the serious ligament damage to Wes Brown. He said: " We have some good young defenders, but I´ll be looking for experience in the summer, especially with Wes being out." Brazilian centre-back Lucio was in the £20million bracket a year ago, but agents have alerted United that he is available for a fraction of that price now. Lucio´s club, Bayer Leverkusen, only just avoided relegation from the Bundesliga this season and are desperate to cut their wage bill.

Fergie, Wenger in Roma battle
Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are set to slug it out over Monaco´s £5million-rated keeper Flavio Roma. Sport of the World has learned that Fergie was in the Stade de France last weekend to watch Roma help Monaco beat Sochaux 4-1 in the French League Cup final. And on Tuesday, he sent United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton to watch Roma play against Guingamp in the French First Division. Arsenal, who had a £4m bid for Roma knocked back during the January transfer window, also had a representative at the Guingamp match. Roma said: " I am aware that both Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in me. I know they have been following me for several months, although so far I haven´t had any direct contact with either of them. To play for Arsenal or United would be a dream."

Becks needs Italian job
Rui Costa believes it is time for David Beckham to up sticks and try a new footballing experience in Italy. The Portuguese star left Benfica to play in Italy nine years ago. The midfielder has not regretted a day of it, having played for both Fiorentina and now AC Milan, who he represents in tomorrow´s European Cup final against Juventus. Costa believes Beckham would thrive in Serie A. He said: " A lot of players are used to only one way of playing and could not adapt to Italian football. But Beckham could do it very easily. He has such a sure touch and great ability to pass over long and short range - he would be perfect for Italian football. He also has a lot of experience, which is a key thing when you are moving from one big club to another one." AC Milan have been trying without success to tempt Beckham to the San Siro for the last three years.

Shadow of Beckham over Italy shoot-out
There are reasons why Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Juventus will win tomorrow night´s European Cup final at Old Trafford - and why he would want them to win. Should mighty AC Milan conquer Marcello Lippi´s side, the word in Italy is that city rivals Inter would react by launching an audacious bid for David Beckham.

Sam snub for David
Sam Hammam reckons David Beckham is too soft for his Cardiff revolution. The outspoken supremo believes Beckham´s pop star image and his fancy Alice bands have no place in Wales. He said: " Beckham won´t be coming to Wales, we don´t like that sort down here."

Rio on a loser
Rio Ferdinand trudged off the England training pitch yesterday leaving Sven Goran Eriksson with the defensive nightmare he dreaded. England´s coach faces a gamble on the novice partnership of Gareth Southgate and Matthew Upson in central defence for the crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia at Middlesbrough on June 11. Ferdinand, who was hoping to win his 33rd cap at the Riverside, moved yesterday from the gymnasium in La Manga to one of the football pitches to test the knee injury which only came to light after England´s 2-1 victory against South Africa in Durban last Thursday. Although there was no official word from the FA that the Manchester United defender will not be fit for the Slovakia game, his body language after training suggested he knows he will not make it.

Sam gets shirty
Sam Hammam´s crusade to squeeze the whole of Wales into a Cardiff shirt took a giant step forward with the play-off win over QPR. " It troubles me to see Welsh children walking around in the shirts of clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal," he said. " I won´t stop until they´re wearing Cardiff shirts."

It´s no-go Davies
Simon Davies has promised boss Glenn Hoddle he is staying at Spurs. Welsh midfielder Davies, 23, who has attracted the attention of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: " I see my long-term future at Tottenham until they tell me otherwise."

United cast-off May struggles to get new club
David May leaves Manchester United this summer knowing he faces a tough task to find a new club. The 32-year-old defender will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires after a nine-year stay which has brought him five major winners´ medals - including the Champions League - even though he has rarely been a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson´s side. He said: " Dropping down the divisions wouldn´t bother me but it will be dog-eat-dog out there this summer because a lot of players will be in the same boat. I just hope potential players remember I have played at the highest level."

Martin´s a winner after all
Elation or despair, you´re never in the slightest doubt which emotion is flooding the senses of Martin O´Neill. He´s probably still shaking that head in disbelief this morning, striving to come to terms with the reality of life without a trophy on the green-and-white side of Glasgow. But the season when he won nothing could turn out to be the season that brought him everything. It offers him the chance to put himself even more firmly in line as No 1 candidate as Alex Ferguson´s successor at Manchester United. In his first season O´Neill steered Celtic to a Treble. In his second he won back-to-back titles for the first time in years. This time he has won nothing. And there lies the challenge now facing the heir to the Old Trafford throne. He came south of Hadrian´s Wall to put both Blackburn and Liverpool out of the UEFA Cup. If the Old Trafford hierarchy required confirmation O´Neill could handle the demands of Europe, he offered them irrefutable evidence. And he knows exactly what is required now. He has to do what Ferguson has just done: produce a triumphant team again from a dressing room occupied by players feeling sorry for themselves. Fergie showed how under-achieving multi-millionaires can be shaken from complacency and cajoled back to the work-ethic.

Don´t quit now Incey
Sir Jack Hayward marched on to the pitch after Wolves´ play-off triumph and begged Paul Ince to stay. The veteran skipper´s contract ends this summer. But the chairman, whose side beat Sheffield United 3-0 in yesterday´s Division One final, believes 35-year-old Ince´s experience and commitment will be vital in the Premiership. Hayward said: " I have too much enthusiasm for this club. When you´re born 300 yards from the ground, you´re a Molineux boy. That´s why I asked Incey to stay. He said he´d think about it. Yes, I went overboard with the money I´ve spent but this has repaid all that. Dave Jones inspires the team. Now all we have to do is beat Manchester United 6-0 and then win the championship." Full-back Denis Irwin, 37, also faces an uncertain future. He admits even the prospect of a return to Old Trafford may not persuade him to play on. He said: " It´s a young man´s game now. I´ve always been a runner and I´m not sure if I can run any more."
Andrew Dillon, The Sun
Vieira wants fiver
Patrick Vieira wants a new five-year deal at Arsenal - and has vowed never to play for Manchester United. The Gunners skipper, 26, has just one year left on his current deal and will continue negotiations during the summer. But the French midfield star declared: " I really want to stay at Arsenal." Vieira, signed for £3.5million from AC Milan in 1996, has been a target for both United and Real Madrid. He added: " When I have to leave Arsenal I will go abroad. I don´t see myself in Manchester."

" Ronaldinho hint"
Rumoured United target Ronaldinho has dropped a huge hint about his future.
The Brazilian superstar has suggested that this weekend´s French Cup Final will be his last game for Paris St Germain, whom he joined in July 2001, and United are said to have already requested talks with the Stade de France club.
" I can´t wait for the cup final especially as I feel really good at the moment," said Ronaldinho, in the build-up to the match against Auxerre which Sir Alex is expected to attend.
" I have been happy here and Paris has been an experience I´ll never forget."
Francis Graille, the new president of PSG, has revealed that United have shown an interest in the 23-year-old forward - but has refused talks until after the Cup Final.
Ruud begs Fergie to match Robson
Ruud van Nistelrooy wants Alex Ferguson to do a Bobby Robson. Manchester United boss Fergie, 61 – who landed his eighth Premiership title this season – signed a three-year contract in 2002 after doing a U-turn over retirement plans. But he is nine years younger than Newcastle chief Robson – and van Nistelrooy insists Ferguson should keep working too.

Charlton: adapt or we’ll fail
Bobby Charlton has conceded Manchester United may never conquer Europe again unless they change their whole approach. Charlton, a winner with United in 1968, will be the most frustrated man in town tonight when Juventus and AC Milan meet at Old Trafford in the European Cup final. United beat Juve in the tournament this season yet crashed out to Real Madrid in the last eight despite putting FIVE goals past them over the two legs. Now Sir Bobby reckons Alex Ferguson’s men must drop the gung-ho approach and adopt a more defensive style if they are to repeat their 1999 win.

We don´t want Beckham
AC Milan are the latest European giant to deliver a stinging snub to David Beckham. The England skipper was linked to Real Madrid until the Spanish club insisted they had no interest in signing him. Italian big guns Milan have also been monitoring his position at Manchester United and were rumoured to have leapt to the head of the queue. Milan star Rui Costa exclusively told SunSport yesterday that Becks should give it a go in Italy. But on the eve of their all-Italian European Cup final against Juventus - at United´s own Old Trafford stadium - AC officially turned their back on Becks. Their manager Carlo Ancelotti made sweeping changes last year after finishing fourth in Serie A - and those have paid off with their march to tonight´s final. Now he does not intend to make too many more in the summer.

Fergie: We must defend like Italians
The accent of the Old Trafford evening will be very Italian - but it is time for Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson to look and learn. When Juventus and AC Milan walk out tonight the United boss and his players must identify their own shortcomings, rather than think about what might have been. There is surely no chance of the Champions League final coming remotely close to the last European game at Old Trafford in terms of excitement, attacking football and sheer exhilaration. United´s exit at the hands of Real Madrid was a glorious night as the two sides threw everything at each other. But football is about winning as well as style. Madrid were too good for United, but picked off by the coldly clinical and calculating Juventus in the semis. And for all the thrills Fergie´s team are capable of producing, he knows that Juve and Milan already have the defensive solidity he must install in his own troops. Ferguson said: " I honestly believe that we are very close now to where we want to be in the Champions League."

Wenger turns down Real job
Arsene Wenger has rejected the advance of Real Madrid and committed himself to Arsenal for at least the next two years. The Arsenal manager admitted meeting Madrid officials in Paris last week but said he had no intention of walking out. ´I met everyone on Friday,´ Wenger told L´Equipe. ´But I´ve got two years left on my contract at Arsenal and I´ll see that out.´

Goal-shy Paul, man of mystery
Paul Scholes is well aware he has an anniversary looming - and it is not one he will be celebrating wildly. When England play Slovakia on June 11 in the Euro 2004 qualifier they have to win, Scholes will be looking back on two years of international football in which he has failed to score a single goal. In all, he has played 55 matches for his country, which makes him the most capped player in the squad preparing for England´s final two games of the season, and he has scored 13 goals, second only in this party to Michael Owen.

Theatre workshop
Old Trafford received a timely name change yesterday when the stadium Manchester United call their theatre of dreams was described as the Theatre of Football by the organisers of this evening´s Champions League final. It was probably something that was lost in translation when Uefa produced the official programmes and posters for the all-Italian contest between Juventus and AC Milan, but for Sir Alex Ferguson and everyone at the host club, it somehow seemed appropriate. For Manchester United´s manager, tonight´s game represents a lesson in European football that will be played out in the luxury of his own backyard.

Fergie in Boro raid
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to make a final move to sign Gareth Southgate from Middlesbrough. The Manchester United manager wants to add an experienced defender to his squad as he launches a concerted effort to win the Champions League. Ferguson almost signed Southgate when he was at Aston Villa but the player was not interested in the one-year contract offer. Now Ferguson believes a two-year deal will tempt the England centre-half, who has recently spoken of his frustration at not playing European football.

Milan move for Becks
Silvio Berlusconi, Italy´s prime minister and the nation´s richest man, has authorised a move by his club AC Milan, for David Beckham. The England captain will not be at Old Trafford tonight to see Milan play Juventus in the European Cup final. Instead Beckham, wife Victoria and their two sons, are on a family holiday in the United States. He has been made aware of two firm approaches for his services - one from Milan and another from a multi-millionaire bidding to take control of Barcelona. United are ready to cash in on any offers of more than £30million.

Milan don´t want Becks
AC Milan have played down a £30million move for David Beckham as they prepare to take on Juventus in tonight´s Champions League final at Old Trafford. Milan have been linked with Beckham since Real Madrid insisted they would not be making a summer bid for the England captain. But coach Carlo Ancelotti said: " I admire the technical ability of a number of Manchester United players, but we have great players here and this Milan side will stay together. Milan doesn´t need to be rebuilt and there will be no big changes."
