David Beckham will find out the extent of the damage to his wrist on Friday after fracturing it in England´s 2-1 win over South Africa.
The England captain, who broke the scaphoid bone in his right hand after a heavy fall, is expected to travel to Old Trafford on Friday afternoon to allow Manchester United´s medical staff to assess the injury.

Beckham would have missed England´s Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia regardless of the injury because of a suspension.

But the length of his lay-off will become clearer on Friday.

A spokesman for the Football Association said: " David has suffered a fractured scaphoid, which is a bone at the bottom of the thumb leading into the wrist bone.

" He went to hospital after suffering the injury, had an X-ray and it has been confirmed that there is a break.

" As regards the extent of the injury in terms of how long David will need treatment, we are not sure at this stage.

" But David has flown back to England from South Africa and will return to Manchester United for treatment. Hopefully it can settle down quickly and he can have a good summer."

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was anxious about the extent of the injury, which can take anything from six weeks to six months to heal.

The Swede said: " It is bad luck for him in what was his last game of the season.

" Our doctor and the Manchester United doctor are going to speak to each other and see how long it will be before he is fit again. In fact, I´m sure they have probably already spoken to each other.

" I´m sorry for him. I hope he will recover as quickly as possible and can have a normal life over the summer."

Beckham´s latest injury comes just over a year after breaking the metatarsal bone in his foot ahead of the World Cup.

Manchester United have entered talks with New York MetroStars about signing their goalkeeper Tim Howard, the Major League club have confirmed.
The 23-year-old suffers from Tourette´s Syndrome - a neurological disorder that causes nervous tics and uncontrolled verbal outbursts or random swearing.

But Howard has worked hard to control the condition and may now be heading to the Premiership.

" I know there are discussions, but I don´t know how serious they are," New York MetroStars head coach Bob Bradley told BBC GMR.

" A club like Manchester United, competing in the Champions League, needs top players. Tim is a young player who I think we will see move up the ladder quickly."

The deal could still stall over a visa for the goalkeeper.

Howard has yet to play for the United States in a serious international because of the form of Blackburn´s Brad Friedel and Spurs´ Kasey Keller.

Several other goalkeepers have also been linked with summer moves to Old Trafford, including Leeds´ Paul Robinson and Southampton´s Antti Niemi.

The speculation over a new goalkeeper arriving at Old Trafford has arisen since Fabien Barthez´s poor performances against Real Madrid.

In the closing stages of United´s campaign the Frenchman lost his place to Roy Carroll.

L´équipe d´Angleterre s´inquiète malgré sa victoire 2-1 contre l´Afrique du Sud, en match amical. En effet David Beckham s´est blessé au bras. Le milieu offensif de Manchester United est sorti après 50 minutes de jeu et s´est rendu à l´hôpital. La gravité de la blessure reste toutefois inconnue, la star doit passer de nouveaux examens aujourd´hui.

Manchester United have agreed a formal link-up with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.
Under the agreement, the clubs will exchange players and scouting information and co-operate in developing young players.
