" Kieran hopes for the future"
Reds midfielder Kieran Richardson says that he hopes to become a first team regular at Old Trafford next season.
The Londoner came on to score against Leicester City in the Worthington Cup, having made his full first-team debut away to Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League seven days earlier. He wants to make similar impacts in 2003/04.
" I hope to establish myself in the next year, and hopefully become a first team regular," Richardson said on Wednesday.
" I like it when the crowd sing my name, and love it when you see fans with your name and number on their shirt. I´ve not seen many, though!
2002/03 was a memorable season for the rising star who can play on the wing and in central midfield. He tasted senior action, and also won the FA Youth Cup - eleven years after his idol Ryan Giggs.
" My Worthington Cup goal was good, and I really enjoyed starting the match against Maccabi Haifa. That was a great experience for me," he revealed.
" Ryan´s on another level in training, but then all the players at United have different attributes and I´m learning from all of them. We´ll just have to see what happens."
Fergie´s new keeper
Manchester United have agreed a deal for goalkeeper Tim Howard, the American who has fought an extraordinary battle with Tourette´s Syndrome. The 23-year-old has risen to the top in America with New York MetroStars despite suffering from the neurological disorder that causes nervous tics and uncontrolled verbal outbursts or random swearing. The 6ft 2in star has quickly risen to the top of the Major League. United initially contacted Howard and MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz in March, expressing interest. Howard said then: " You dream about things like this. They are the biggest sports team in world history." After viewing tapes of him in action, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sent goalkeeping coach Paul Barron to Houston to watch the recent United States-Mexico friendly. Barron was hugely impressed after Howard kept a clean sheet and made five stunning saves - and has now persuaded Fergie to pursue the player.

United close in on £12m Ronaldinho
Ronaldinho’s emergence as the new face of Nike looks like sealing him a £12million move to Manchester United. Negotiations have already started to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford once the French season finishes at the end of the month. Sir Alex Ferguson wants to establish a better link between his midfield and attack – and has made the Brazilian his prime target. Just as significantly, Nike are using the Paris Saint Germain forward’s image to sell their new range and would welcome his presence at their flagship club. The Sportswear giants insist they avoid trying to influence transfer policy, but Nike hardly need to point out the mutual benefits of one of their most marketable clients teaming up with their major football partner.

Stop this crush says Rio
Rio Ferdinand wants Premiership stars to rise up and unite against the game´s crazy fixture list. Manchester United ace Ferdinand will be at the heart of the defence when England take on South Africa in Durban tonight. It is the first of three end-of-season internationals after a long, arduous season. The next is another friendly against Serbia and Montenegro in Leicester on June 3 and the last the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia at Middlesbrough on June 11. Then Ferdinand faces a season that could go on for an incredible 363 days. He returns to club training on July 7 and if England go all the way in Europe the final is on July 4 2004. Potentially he could have 80 games in that time, one every four and a half days. He said: " It´s a bit baffling sometimes that we´ve got to travel so far as we have. The whole fixture list is a bit baffling."

Gary: I dread leaving home
Gary Neville admits he dreads the day he may have to consider leaving Manchester United. ‘I know that if I played for another team I wouldn’t get the same feeling,’ the 27-year-old England full-back told United’s Members Review. ‘There are certain teams I can’t play for, or to use a better word, won’t play for. I can never understand how a player can play for United and then play for rivals clubs. I hope I never have to leave but the reality is that one day whether soon or in five or six years, it may happen.’

Inter get wheels rolling for Becks
David Beckham will return from South Africa after tonight’s friendly in Durban to discover that the multi-million pound auction for his signature is about to spring into life. Inter Milan will start the transfer bidding by declaring their intention of utilising the financial clout of long-standing sponsors Pirelli to bankroll the personal terms and record fee for the England captain. Inter’s move will surely inspire a bid from Real Madrid, with Manchester United likely to accept any offer that goes beyond £30million.

Rio rage
Rio Ferdinand last night called on Europe’s football to sort out the fixture chaos that is leaving top stars shattered. The Manchester United star will play his 51st match of the season when he lines up for England in South Africa tonight. But he can’t understand why England’s key Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia is being played on June 11 – exactly a month after United’s last Premiership match against Everton. Rio blasted: “The whole fixture list is a bit baffling. The lads can’t understand why Uefa can’t get it sorted so we play a week or two straight after the season instead of having to go on for a full month.
David Woods, Daily Star
And finally, the conspiracy theorists are scraping the barrel here…
Becks hair to a fortune
Is Beckham’s newly-braided barnet a marketing ploy? I once walked through a shanty village in Tanzania and was surrounded by small children. The only word of English they knew became evident when they pointed at my trainers and said: “adidas!” Brands like adidas and Pepsi pay Becks £1m a year, he has an adidas deal worth £7m over five years and, just before tonight’s match in Durban, he has adopted a hairstyle which is normally associated with black dudes. What a happy coincidence.

United´s summer spending spree - in the tabloids - has almost reached the £250 million mark, thanks to a boost from the Manchester Evening News.
ManUtd.com have been keeping track of all the names linked with the Reds since 25 April, and the local paper joined the fun and games to full effect on Wednesday.
Twenty players fill their centre-pages, with six new names to add to our Transfer Speculation table - at a total of £34 million. That pushes the total spent - in their heads - to a mighty £244.9 million.
The lucky men this time around are defenders Julien Escude, Lilian Thuram and Cafu, midfielder Roberto Ayala and Premiership forwards Alan Smith and James Beattie.
That means that 39 different players have been said to be coming to Old Trafford this summer - five goalkeepers, eight defenders, eleven midfielders and fifteen strikers!
Will any of them turn out to be true?

Although a long-term injury to Wes Brown has intensified Ferguson’s search for defensive reinforcements, the manager’s next priority is a goalkeeper to replace the erratic Fabien Barthez. Brad Friedel, the 32-year-old United States player, is understood to have emerged as the Ferguson’s favoured candidate, although Blackburn’s £10 million valuation may prompt him to exploit Leeds United’s financial plight with a bid for Paul Robinson.
