" Phil feels fantastic"
Phil Neville is delighted to be back in the England squad.
The Reds defender-cum-midfielder was omitted from the World Cup party by Sven Goran Eriksson, but his impressive performances for United this season have seen him recalled to the international scene, and is hoping for a confidence-boosting win against South Africa in Durban on Tuesday.
" We need to stay injury-free, and hopefully we´ll be full of confidence going into the Euro 2004 qualifiers," said Phil on Monday.
" A win is always nice, but it´s vital that we´re ready for the Slovakia game which is the most important of the three matches this summer."
Phil trained with United colleagues David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand at Arsenal´s London Colney training ground on Monday, before the squad will fly out to South Africa for the clash with Quinton and his mates on Thursday.
Best of luck to all the international Reds.
Utd close in on US superkid
Manchester United will use their pre-season tour of the USA to stake their claim for an American superkid who was making fools out of seasoned professionals before he was a teenager. Freddy Adu is being touted as the player who will become Uncle Sam´s first superstar after excelling for the Under-17s last year against MLS Champions San Jose Earthquakes when he was just 12. United have contacted Adu´s uncle - former Leeds United striker Tony Yeboah - about the possibility of him being a special guest of the club at one of their matches when they go stateside.

United eyeing Baraja
Manchester United are lining up a move for £18 million-rated Valencia midfielder Ruben Baraja. Spain star Baraja, 27, is viewed as a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and has hinted he is willing to listen to offers. His agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, said: " We haven´t had direct contact with Manchester United, but we have been informed by intermediaries that United and another English club are interested. Ruben wants to go to a club with real ambition."

Mak ´no´ to United
Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele has insisted he´s not interestd in signing for Manchester United. Makelele has been linked with a move to the Premiership, with United leading the chase, but the Frenchman said: " My representatives have not been speaking to Manchester United and I don´t want to play for United."

Fergie backs ´bullish´ Brown
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wes Brown has the mental strength to recover from the latest set-back in his injury-blighted career. The Manchester United manager feels deeply for Brown, who has been ruled out until next year after rupturing cruciate ligaments in a knee for the second time in four years, and is bakcing him to return as good as ever. " It´s an absolute tragedy, " said Ferguson. " But the one bit of light is that these operations are not the terrors they were. I am very confident Wes will be back as quick as possible and as good as ever."

Neville´s silver lining
Phil Neville admitted last night he only has to look at his medal haul to remind himself why he stays at Manchester United. Neville accepts he will never be able to nail down a first choice place at Old Trafford, especially with boss Sir Alex Ferguson poised to strengthen his squad over the summer. But the versatile 26-year-old said leaving United is something he simply could not contemplate - because nothing could be better. Neville, who has earned an unexpected England recall for Thursday´s game against South Africa, said: " I´ve won six championships, two FA Cup and the Champions League. If I left I might play more games, but I know I wouldn´t be as happy."

Deadly hug
Bryan Robson launched a grovelling bid to take over the vacant manager´s job at Aston Villa yesterday with a fawning tribute to unpopular club chairman Doug Ellis. The England legend is so keen to get back on the managerial ladder and ingratiate himself with Ellis that he claimed the 76-year-old was doing an " unbelievable" job of building the club up. Robson, out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough two years ago, believes the blame for Villa´s fall to mediocrity lies with former bosses Graham Taylor and John Gregory...and most certainly not king-maker Ellis. The former midfield great´s views are at odds with Taylor´s who quit last week claiming Ellis was holding the club back and should retire. Villa fans have also protested against Ellis´s continued stewardship. Robson will face tough competition from David O´Leary and perhaps Leicester boss Micky Adams for the job, but telling Ellis just what he wants to hear will have done his chances no harm, unless his rivals launch their own servile charm offensive.

Plaits the way to do it
The plaits are just a passing fancy but no one should underestimate the straight-thinking that goes on beneath the skull of David Beckham. The England football captain recently expressed the opinion that it might not be a bad thing if the authorities forced the England team to play Slovakia in an empty stadium. Many poured scorn on such a suggestion and yet it was not only a courageous statement by the nation´s most prominent player. It was well-founded, constructive and absolutely right. It took guts, to say it - the kind of guts absent for decades at FA headquarters while the hooligans who follow the England side have wrecked and polluted countless towns and cities throughout Europe.

Loyal Nev´s United mad
Phil Neville last night hit back at the critics who claim he´s daft to stay in the shadows at Manchester United. Neville is set to face South Africa in Durban on Thursday at left-back, despite being in and out of the Champions´ side and playing mainly in midfield this season. " I´ve never been offered a route out of United," insisted Neville, 26, who´s back in the squad for the first time since before the World Cup. " Sir Alex Ferguson´s always made it clear how important I am to the club. As long as he is happy with me, then that´s OK with me."

The chips are down, Becks
David Beckham and England have been carping before even landing in South Africa by demanding they are only served . .. English fish. The England skipper has proved there is no plaice like home when it comes to the squad´s diet. But staff at the Beverley Hills hotel in Durban cod not believe it as Becks and co´s request left the chefs floundering before the three day visit began.

Don´t you know who we are?
In this age of celebrity worship it is gratifying to hear that the fully-booked Brasserie restaurant in Chester´s Grosvenor Hotel turned away Messrs Beckham, Ferdinand and Scholes when the United superstars had strolled in without warning after a day at the Chester races fully expecting a dinner table to be found for them.

PETE BELIEVES THAT CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE
Story by Editor 19 May 2003
It is what this club is built on
Peter Kenyon:
" Youth development is the heart of the team. You have to
look at our two most successful periods and that is when the
manager and the club have been concentrating on developing
the youth side, the 50´s and 60´s with Sir Matt and the 90´s
with Sir Alex.
" Youth development is important and we have spent and
developed our Academy and have probably got one of the best
facilities in Europe. We have brought in Francisco Filo and
strengthened our coaching staff under Les Kershaw, and those
are important statements.
Speaking on MUTV, Kenyon said: " I think we are sending the
message that youth is an important part of Manchester
United´s history and future and the youth team picking up
the FA youth Cup has again demonstrated that and this is
about building for the future."

UNITED MUST SIGN DAVID JAMES
Story by Editor 19 May 2003
This from a goalkeeping ‘expert’
Anyone who could possibly call Dave Beasant an expert wasn’t
at Old Trafford when we played Chelsea in April 1993.
However the MEN tout him as such, and apparently he feels we
should buy David James:
" From what I´ve seen, Barthez doesn´t seem to command his
penalty area in the way Schmeichel used to and that has led
at times to a breakdown in communications between himself
and his defenders. Sir Alex, I´m willing to bet, would like
nothing better than to sign a young Schmeichel but I don´t
believe that Friedel fits into that category. But David
James is in the Schmeichel mould. He has got the same
physical attributes and the same command of the penalty area
and If I was Alex and looking for a new `keeper, James would
be my choice."
