" Brown suffers injury agony "
Brown was stretchered off against Everton
Profile: Wes Brown
Manchester United defender Wes Brown has been plunged into a new injury nightmare after scans revealed he has ruptured knee ligaments.
The 23-year-old, who has been plagued by injury in recent seasons, twisted his knee in the 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday and had to be stretchered off.
" Wes Brown has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee," a statement on the club´s website confirmed.
" Wes will undergo surgery shortly, and it will be into next season before he is fit."
Brown´s United team-mate Nicky Butt has also been told to rest and will miss England´s Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia with an ankle injury.
Butt to miss crunch England game
It had been thought that Brown had suffered only a minor problem.
However the injury was diagnosed on Tuesday, leaving the England international facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Brown made his debut as an 18-year-old in 1998, but missed the entire 1999-2000 season with a cruciate ligament injury.
He also suffered a broken ankle in the opening game of this season, but returned to action in November and played a major role as United came from behind to win the Premiership title.
" Nicky sits out the summer"
Manchester United have issued the following statement regarding midfielder Nicky Butt:
" Nicky Butt has had persistent problems with his right ankle and following discussions with the England medical staff it is in Nicky´s best interests that he will have an injections into his ankle.
" He will be rested over the summer."
Nicky was on the bench at Goodison Park on Sunday but did not come off the bench. He started 22 matches in 2002/03, coming off the bench in a further seven - having started the season on the sidelines with the same ankle injury.
Oh, des news ^^ ^^ ^^
" Sven backs Rio "
Sven Goran Eriksson says that Rio Ferdinand has a permanent place at the heart of the England defence, regardless of his form for United.
David Beckham and Paul Scholes were previously told that they will always start in Sven´s side, injuries and suspensions permitting, and now the Reds defender has joined the list of undroppable stars.
" Rio Ferdinand had an absolutely fantastic World Cup and I´m still very happy with him," said Sven after naming Rio - who has come in for criticism after his £30 million move to Old Trafford - in his latest England squad.
" Even if he´s not the best player on the pitch in every game, he will still be picked by me," revealed the England coach.
Sven´s reasoning is that players may have bad games if their club is performing badly, but that shouldn´t transfer itself onto the international stage.
" When a player is in or out of form, it also relates to what his team are doing," he explained.
" Before Christmas, Manchester United were not doing very well, but they have been flying since then."
With Wes Brown, Sol Campbell and Jonathan Woodgate all injured, Rio will be at the heart of Eriksson´s plans for the friendlies against South Africa and Serbia-Montenegro, as well as the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia.
" Bellion linked with Reds move"
David Bellion´s agent has responded to resurfacing reports that the French forward is poised to sign for Manchester United.
There was rumoured to be interest in the Sunderland player, whose contract expires this summer, during the January transfer window, but a deal never materialised.
However, the 20-year-old pacy forward, who signed for Sunderland on a free transfer from French side AS Cannes in 2001, is again being linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Bellion´s agent, Mike Morris, said: " I don´t think it is any secret United like him but nothing has been signed."
You ain´t seen the best of me
Golden Boot winner Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned Premiership defences: You ain´t seen nothing yet. The Manchester United hitman´s penalty in the final-day 2-1 win at Everton was his 25th league goal and 44th in all competitions. But the Dutchman said: " We all want to improve. I am 26 and I should have some good years ahead of me. Last season I scored a lot but I wanted to be a more complete player and not just a goalscorer."

Football stories
United will this week complete the signing of Sunderland star David Bellion. The French striker, 21, is out of contract but - because he is under 23 - United will be asked to pay around £1million to comply with UEFA rules.

Houllier £12m Duff gamble
Liverpool will confirm their faith in manager Gerard Houllier by making available the money to buy Damien Duff. And they will follow up the capture of the £12m-rated Irish international winger by allowing their French coach to make three more signings - at a combined total that will exceed £20m. The Anfield club are confident they are now favourites to land Blackburn ace Duff, after Manchester United´s interest cooled.

Bruce bid to snatch United´s Carroll
Birmingham manager Steve Bruce wants to buy goalkeeper Roy Carroll from his old club Manchester United. Bruce has asked Sir Alex Ferguson to name a price for Carroll, who has pushed Fabien Barthez out of the United side for the last three matches, but is still unsure about his future. City have already moved for Sunderland´s Thomas Sorensen. They have yet to go ahead with the transfer because of the £2.5m fee. Bruce is willing to make Carroll his No 1, if he can afford United´s asking price.

United in riches
Manchester United´s spoils from the season mount up to £50.6million from television and prize-money alone. Arsenal have earned slightly more, £51m - as champions last season they took the biggest share of the Champions League TV cash - while, by comparison, relegated West Bromwich brought in £16.6m.

Now watch this £30m
Ryan Giggs expects Sir Alex Ferguson to press the button on a summer spending spree despite Manchester United´s recapture of the Premiership crown. Giggs says United cannot afford to stand still and Ferguson has already admitted his squad is " one or two short", with a new striker, winger, goalkeeper and defender on his shopping list. Ferguson is closing on Sunderland´s out-of-contract winger David Bellion and preparing to swoop for Jermain Defoe, who handed in a transfer request yesterday following West Ham´s relegation. Leeds pair Harry Kewell and Paul Robinson, plus Nantes defender Julian Escude, are also targets. United chief Peter Kenyon is preparing to hand Ferguson a transfer pot of about £30million to restock a squad reduced by the retirement of Laurent Blanc and the likely departures of Fabien Barthez, Luke Chadwick, Michael Stewart and David May.

Kewell Fergie´s jewel
Ryan Giggs has predicted a shake-up of Manchester United´s title-winning team. Giggs said his record-equalling eighth success is " without doubt the greatest of the championships I have been involved in." But he is still convinced Sir Alex Ferguson will move players in - and out - this summer. And he is intrigued at the prospect of finding out who.
