Beckham: This is the greatest
Manchester United finally got to celebrate their record eighth Premiership title at Goodison Park yesterday - and David Beckham admitted that this season´s title triumph is his greatest of all. Already champions, United beat Everton 2-1 yesterday to end the Merseysiders´ Uefa Cup dream, thanks to goals from Beckham with a trademark free kick and a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty. As Beckham celebrated with jubilant team-mates after the trophy presentation, he revealed: " This is the sweetest of the six titles I have won."
David Maddock, Daily Mirror

Ruud´s Golden double
Manchester United lifted the Premiership trophy for the eighth time amid scenes of jubilation at Goodison Park. And there was double joy as Ruud van Nistelrooy won the Golden Boot after bagging his 25th Premiership goal with the penalty which sealed yesterday´s 2-1 win over Everton. Delighted boss Alex Ferguson was full of praise for the Dutch striker, who has hit 44 goals in all during an incredible season. Ferguson said: " Ruud has been fantastic. I thought this would happen. This season he has just got stronger and stronger with every game and has done superbly well."
Neil Custis, The Sun

The Red masters
Manchester United showed exactly why they are the best. Sorry Arsene! The professional performance left Everton´s European dream in tatters long before the end. Goodison boss David Moyes must have feared the worst when Alex Ferguson named his strongest line-up to ensure there would be no end-of-season flavour to this contest. Typical Fergie, really.
Mike Ellis, The Sun

O´Neill can replace Fergie
Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has tipped Martin O´Neill to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as gaffer at Old Trafford. Edwards, who is stepping down in the summer after 23 years in charge of the Premiership giants, revealed how highly O´Neill is thought of by the United powerbrokers. The Celtic boss has finally signed his one-year rolling Parkhead contract but Edwards´ comments will reopen speculation on his long-term future. He said: " One person we would have to put in the frame is Martin O´Neill. He won two League Cups with Leicester City and you see what happened there after he left. Then he went on to Celtic and all the success he has had there. He broke Rangers´ dominance and has now reached a UEFA Cup final, so he is doing the business in Europe. The only question is whether he can handle the really big players at United, because there is a huge difference."
John Shields, The Sun

Pass masters United stage grand finale
As Manchester United´s players cavorted around Goodison Park with the Premiership trophy, Wayne Rooney must have been in rueful contemplation. He could only reflect on how the script had gone awry at the worst possible moment, and a European place slipped from Everton´s grasp.
John Edwards, The Sun

We can regain crown
Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will recapture the Premiership title if they improve their defence next season. After scoring 85 goals this term there is no doubt the Gunners have enough quality up front to finish top. But, having seen his side ship 42 goals, Highbury boss Wenger insists more work is needed at the back. The Frenchman said: " We need to keep 99 per cent of what we do. We produced some excellent football and excellent entertainment all season and we promote the English game all over the world. But we need to redress our defensive performances. However, it would be harder to redress if we weren´t scoring."
Carl Liddle, The Sun

Sorry Thierry, but Ruud IS the real Golden Boy
Ruud van Nistelrooy thoroughly deserves to be the Premiership´s Golden Boot winner after missing out on both Player of the Year awards to his great rival Thierry Henry. Arsenal striker Henry was voted the best by both his fellow professionals and the Football Writers´ Association and he had had an outstanding season - but it still cannot compare with van Nistelrooy. Manchester United´s magnificent Dutch striker has not only helped his club win the Premiership title and finish as top scorer but he has also been the best player in the country by some distance.
Mark Lawrenson, Daily Mirror

Fergie taste for after eights
Manchester United know there may be troubles ahead, but yesterday at Goodison Park, amid the laughter and romance of their most remarkable Premiership triumph yet, they faced the music and danced. As Sir Alex Ferguson joyously raised aloft the glittering Championship trophy, the scenes of real jubilation and almost tearful triumph that greeted this wonderful success showed just how much the defeat of Arsenal in the title race meant to them.
David Maddock, Daily Mirror

Fergie still at the races
Chester Races last Wednesday, and Roy Keane was reminded why he has never been one for backing the horses. “I lost a few quid,” he said in what seemed something of an understatement. “We get introduced to all the right people when we’re there – the jockeys, the trainers. But it made no difference.” Keane went only because the outing had been organised for the entire Manchester United squad. A captain who, by his own admission, limits how much time he spends socialising with his team-mates, he thought it would be nice to celebrate winning the Premiership in style. Whisper it quietly, but that hard-man façade might just be softening.

ManUtd.com´s Face in the Crowd was delighted to see the Premiership trophy returned to its rightful owners on Sunday - and chuffed to see the players adopt his favourite chant...

“We’ve got our trophy back, we’ve got our trophy back, we’ve got our trophy back, we’ve got our trophy back.”

All week long I’d had these words running through my head. Over and over again. Like most Reds I’d been on cloud nine ever since Mark Viduka’s goal had secured the title for United. I’ve been bursting with pride that my team, our team, has won the Premiership title again. Eight Premiership wins in eleven years and 15 titles overall, now only three behind Liverpool.

Yesterday was a day of celebration as we headed off to Goodison Park to see the team presented with the Premiership trophy. United fans drinking in the pubs near to Anfield, the Arkles pub being packed with Reds before and after the match, were in celebratory mood. The words that have been indelibly planted in my brain all week were sung proudly by fans all through Stanley Park as they made their way to the ground. Once there, supporters were then required to show their ticket at a police cordon in order to get near to the turnstiles and then three times more whilst entering the stadium. It was clear that Everton Football Club were certainly prepared for any fans attempting to get to get into the game with fake tickets or through forced entry.

All week long there had been uncertainty over whether the Premiership trophy would be presented at Goodison at all. The Merseyside club citing ‘safety reasons’ for why the trophy should possibly have been presented back at Old Trafford. Sanity prevailed though and the home club agreed with the Premier League that the presentation could take place in front of United supporters after Everton had done their lap of honour.

Their concerns over safety centred on the fact that relations between the two sets of supporters are not good. The whole Manc-Scouser antipathy burns fiercely, though not with the same intensity as between Liverpool Football Club and ourselves, but concerns remained that any presentation might cause disorder or problems with ticketless Reds. The only antipathy on show inside the ground was verbal banter flying back and forth between the rival fans.

It came as a surprise when Everton took the lead after seven minutes but it hardly affected the great mood in the United end. Kevin Campbell’s header merely prompting a chant of “Champions”. The home fans were delirious believing they were on the verge of qualifying for the UEFA Cup. United supporters remained confident their full strength side would take one of the many chances they were creating. Sure enough the goal duly arrived. David Beckham, from a position that was hardly suited to one of his right foot curled free kicks, stepped forward and beat Wright in the Everton goal. He then ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the away end. Players and fans were United in joy.

“Out of Europe and out of work,” chanted the Red Army as the second half got underway ( a somewhat unfair reference to the stereotype that Merseyside has an abundance of unemployed people). Attention then returned to the play, Wayne Rooney missing two good chances to give his side the lead before United also missed chances through Ruud, Scholes and Beckham. Then came the winner, the Champions being awarded a penalty for a foul on van Nistelrooy. From where I was sat, side on to the incident, Stubbs clearly took a hefty tug at Ruud’s shirt, although the Everton fans didn’t quite see it that way. With boos ringing in his ears the 43-goal Dutchman stepped forward and slotted home number 44 for the season, in the process becoming the Golden Boot winner and equalling his own Premiership scoring record of finding the net in 10 straight matches.

After five minutes of the United players playing keep ball, to shouts of “Ole” from the away end, the final whistle blew. Everton fans again booed the referee as he left the pitch then roused themselves out of dejection at missing out on Europe to applaud their team on their lap of honour. Showing that the sportsmanship United fans displayed in applauding Ronaldo from the pitch was not a one-off, the whole away end rose to show appreciation of David Moyes and his players. It seemed to go down well with the home fans, many of which repaid the gesture by staying to watch the trophy presentation.

It was the moment players and fans had been waiting for. The Premiership trophy would finally be lifted by Roy Keane. A stage was set up in front of the visitors’ section in the Bullens Stand and the players retook the field to chants of “Bring on the Champions”. Then up stepped Keano. In one swift movement he flung the trophy aloft and tickertape shot into the air behind the stage. The away end erupted as if they’d just seen a goal. Champions again. It’s two years since we last experienced this but it felt a lot longer.

“We’ve got our trophy back,” sang the players after they’d taken it in turns to collect their medals. “We’ve got our trophy back,” joined in the fans. Briefly the retiring Laurent Blanc was carried on the players shoulders before they all did a lap of honour around the pitch. In the region of 1-2,000 Reds were in the home ends all around the ground, a ‘champions’ flag was unfurled in the Main Stand. A large number of Everton fans remained to applaud the best team in the country.

At the end of the lap the players were held back from the away section but Rio, then Ruud burst through stewards and threw their shirts ( and boots) into the crowd. They were clearly loving every minute of it and so were United supporters.

Yesterday was a great day and a great end to a great season. The Reds hung in there when Arsenal were flying, then found their own form and ultimately overhauled the Gunners in the title run in. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s goals were instrumental, our young defence with the brilliant John O’Shea was the best in the top flight, Keane, Giggs and Beckham came good and Scholes just maintained his season long brilliance.

There were also plenty of times over the past 10 months when the season didn’t feel great. Like the away day back on November the 9th when I wrote, “Manchester United are not the team they were. Our squad is simply not strong enough. Too many of our players are living on past glories and no longer have the hunger necessary to achieve success.” Looking back now that criticism looks ridiculous, not to mention harsh. But back then that was exactly how many United fans felt. The 3-1 defeat to Manchester City was a result that hurt and one that was not good enough.

Six months on the Premiership trophy is back at Old Trafford and the Maine Road derby defeat looks like one of our most important results this season. That loss had to happen. It re-focussed the squad on their objectives and catapulted them towards better form and better times. Times like yesterday at Goodison.

So now for a summer of celebrating the fact that we’re Champions again and no doubt a couple of months of having the words, “We’ve got our trophy back” going through our heads. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Best Team in England
" It´s a great day for Manchester United, there´s no doubt about that and you can´t deny our form´s been fantastic. Don´t believe all the stories that´ve come from south of the Birmingham divide. We proved ourselves as Champions."

Season Finale
" It was fantastic, some of the stuff. We were playing an Everton team who´ve been absolutely fantastic this season. I thought for around twenty minutes that we were in for a hard match and they were looking very good, Everton. But we got a goal at the right time from David Beckham and second half we were much better. Confidence is a big factor obviously, you saw that in the last 10-15 minutes, we played with massive confidence."

Players Rediscovered Their Hunger
" It was a great test for all of us. They say the beauty of football is that it is a learning process, no matter how old you are, how much experience you have or however much you´ve achieved. With all that you´re learning something all of the time. I think through our own experience we made some good decision early in the season. Maybe they needed to be reminded of the excitement they´ve brought the fans. It´s been 2 years and no matter how you look at it 2 years is a long timefor footballers. I´m glad for them and I´m glad for the fans."

Tribute to Blanc
" I´m pleased for the ones who have their first medal. For Seba, for Laurent Blanc - I´m so pleased for him in his last game and you saw how the players acted at the end of the game and lifted him up. That was a marvellous moment for Manchester United, it tells you how much they appreciate great players and although he didn´t play a lot of games this season, he´s played a great part in the past 2 years for Manchester United."

2003/04 Season
" Next year we´ll be really enthusiatic and everyone will be looking forward to it. I think we´ll enjoy our summer better this year."

It´s on me ´ead Ferguson
By PHILIP CARDY

SOCCER ace David Beckham defied boss Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday — by playing in his girlie hairband.

The Sun revealed on Saturday how tough Man Utd gaffer Fergie told Becks men should not wear them to play football.

But yesterday the England skipper took to the pitch with the Alice band keeping his floppy blond locks in place.

Trendy Becks, 28, has been wearing the band for a few months after growing his hair long.

He has also been spotted around town sporting a tiny ponytail. His show of defiance came as Premiership champions United beat Everton at the Merseysiders’ Goodison Park ground.

Fergie . .. hairbands are ´cissy´

Becks scored a goal from a free kick during the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory on the last day of the Premiership season.

But, as he helped his side celebrate their league supremacy, the hairband row fuelled speculation he may be leaving the club.

A club source said: “Fergie doesn’t want grown men in hairbands. He thinks they’re cissy.

“He grew up in a tough area of Glasgow where men would never dream of wearing a woman’s hairband.

“But David’s his own man. He won’t be bossed around — and loves making fashion statements.”

In February Becks scraped his hair back under a band to show off a cut after Fergie accidentally kicked a boot into his face.

=>pfff ^^ ^^
