"Squeeze your bum time
Alex Ferguson reckons it is ´squeeze your bum´ time for Manchester United and Arsenal. Fergie´s United have cut the Gunners´ Premiership lead to just two points. And the Old Trafford boss said: "It´s all getting a bit tickly now - it´s squeeze your bum time! It´s back in our hands. It´s a real race." Ferguson rests most of his stars against Deportivo tonight as United are already through to the European Cup quarter-finals. But Arsene Wenger´s men need at least a draw in Valencia to join them in the last eight.

Giggs: Heat´s on Arsenal
Ryan Giggs has echoed manager Alex Ferguson´s warning that Arsenal´s chest-thumping title talk could prove to be a hollow boast. Giggs, 29, said the Gunners must now be regretting claims they would have the title wrapped up long before the season was over. And he believes they will be nervous now Manchester United have closed the gap at the top of the table to just two points. The winger, who could captain United against Deportivo La Coruna tonight, said: "Early in the season, Arsenal were talking about winning the title without losing a game. That was always going to come back to haunt them. It will be interesting to see how they cope with us breathing down their necks."

Arsene will eat his words
Alex Ferguson claims winning the Premiership again this season would be his greatest achievement - because he could make Arsene Wenger eat his words. The Manchester United boss is delighted that his side are now just two points behind the leaders after winning at Aston Villa on Saturday while Wenger´s Arsenal lost at Blackburn. And Fergie clearly relishes the prospect of Wenger choking on his boast that Arsenal would win the title and complete the Treble by triumphing in the European Cup and FA Cup - a feat accomplished by United four years ago. Ferguson said: "If we win the title this year it will be our greatest feat yet."

Simply the best
Sir Alex Ferguson last night declared that pipping Arsenal to the Championship this season would represent one of his greatest achievements. And the Manchester United manager went on to say that if his team are unable to wrest the title from Highbury then he would rather see Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle crowned as champions. Ferguson arrived in Spain for a dead Champions League fixture with Deportivo La Coruna knowing that weekend Premiership results had again placed the destiny of the title in his own hands. United are still two points behind Arsenal – but have a crucial trip to Highbury on April 15.

A job for the boys
At the time, it appeared to represent a further indication of Arsenal’s growing superiority over Manchester United. But Sir Alex Ferguson now believes that his team’s FA Cup defeat to their greatest rivals last month served only to hand United an advantage in an intriguing race for the Premiership title. Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at Old Trafford so angered Ferguson that, as the victors celebrated on the field, the Scot launched a football boot which hit David Beckham in the face in one of the most famous fits of dressing room pique the game has seen.

Ferguson called me to clear up job claims, says Sven
Sven Goran Eriksson last night revealed how he has been contacted by Sir Alex Ferguson in a bid to calm the current club versus country crisis. Manchester United manager Ferguson seriously damaged the England coach’s reputation when he suggested in an interview last month that the Swede had been lined up to succeed him at Old Trafford last season. But according to Eriksson yesterday, Ferguson telephoned him on the day that the interview appeared, in talks which were clearly designed to clear the air.

I’ll love it, just love it when we win title
Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Arsene Wenger of showing a lack of respect to the rest of the Premiership. In an ironic turnaround of Kevin Keegan’s infamous “I’d love it if they beat United” tirade of 1996, the Old Trafford boss said: “Given Arsenal’s triumphalism it would be our greatest feat. The results at the weekend brought it back into our hands. It’s our biggest ever challenge to win the Championship this season.”

Fergie just can’t stop playing his mind games
Sir Alex Ferguson arrived here in north Spain ahead of tonight’s ‘dead’ Champions League clash with Deportivo La Coruna with his thoughts set firmly on domestic matters – and a chance to get under his great rival’s skin. Ferguson couldn’t resist having another dig at Arsene Wenger by accusing the Arsenal manager of showing a lack of respect for the rest of the Premiership.

Ferguson: Have Arsenal got the title bottle to live up to boasts?
Sir Alex Ferguson last night accused Arsene Wenger of showing the Premiership a lack of respect by boasting the title is already on its way to Arsenal. Fergie said overtaking the Gunners to lift the title would rank as his greatest achievement because of the “triumphalism” of Wenger and his players throughout the season.

"Ricardo looks to make a point "
Ricardo says that he wants to use Tuesday´s Champions League match against Deportivo to remind Sir Alex Ferguson why he signed him for United.
The Spanish international goalkeeper has made just three first team appearances since joining from Real Valladolid, but has already been told that he´ll be starting the match in la Coruna and he can´t wait to show the manager what he can do.
"When I get a game, especially when I´ve not had much action, it´s a chance to prove to myself, to the fans and to the manager and his staff why they signed me in the first place," Ricardo told the pre-match press conference at the team hotel on Monday.
"It´s great to be back in Spain. It´s my home country and that makes me feel positive and strong. My friends and family will be watching so it´s an opportunity to play well and put in a good performance."
The match is meaningless as United have already won Group D and Deportivo cannot qualify for the quarter-finals - a fact that has surprised the Spanish stopper.
"It was a strong group with tough games and it came down to that goal in the fourth goal of injury time. I wish them well next season," he said

"Fergie takes young squad "
Manchester United are missing eleven players from their usual first-team squad for the trip out to Spain to take on Deportivo.
Barthez, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Brown, Beckham, Gary Neville, Scholes, van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer were all missing from Monday morning´s flight, while Seba Veron, Roy Keane and Quinton Fortune were already ruled out through injury.
It is a young squad that Fergie takes out for the final Group D Champions League game in the Riazor - United´s squad has an average age of 24.
Darren Fletcher is likely to be given another start after his exciting debut performance against Basel last week, while experienced players like Giggs, Phil Neville, Blanc and Butt will have an important role to play in nurturing the young Reds into first-team action.
With Deportivo already out of the competition and United already through to the next stage, the game will give Ferguson the opportunity to rest some of his top stars for the crucial weeks and months ahead, and also to air the young talent at the club.
The clash between the two old adversaries will be the last group game before Friday´s quarter final draw.

Peter Kenyon has dismissed reports that Roy Keane may become the next Manchester United manager. However, he did not dismiss the possibility that one day the Irishman may take the helm at Old Trafford.
"Roy Keane will not be the next manager of Manchester United" stated Kenyon. "I know Roy is an extension of Sir Alex on the pitch and he has said that one day like to manage United, but it´s unlikely that he will immediately replace the current manager."
"But that is not to say Roy won´t one day manage the club"

Resume du match vs La Coruna.....
"United completed their UEFA Champions League second phase group fixtures with a 2-0 defeat against Deportivo La Coruna in Spain last night ( Tuesday).
With United already through to the quarter-final, and Depor eliminated, the game, like last week´s against Basel, was more in keeping with a testimonial than a major cup competition.
Victor gave Depor, Spanish championship runners-up last term, the lead in the 32nd minute and an own-goal from Mark Lynch just after half-time condemned United to their third defeat in this season´s tournament.
Sir Alex Ferguson said he was he was going to use the match to give some of his young players a taste of European action and he was true to his word.
The team named before the kick-off looked more like the selection that would be sent out to play Oldham Athletic in Thursday´s Manchester Senior Cup tie at Altrincham´s Moss Lane than a Champions League fixture in potentially one the most atmospheric stadiums in Spain.
In from the start were defenders Mark Lynch, making his senior debut for the club, Lee Roche and Danny Pugh along with midfielder Darren Fletcher who made his bow in last week´s final home group game against Basel.
It was a similar story on the bench with Daniel Nardiello, Danny Webber, Jimmy Davis and Kieran Richardson getting rare outings with the big boys.
It was a terrific opportunity for the youngsters to sample the continent´s number one club competition as well as playing alongside established stars such as Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Laurent Blanc.
There were plenty of seats vacant in the Riazor Stadium - Depor having already surrendered their claim to a quarter-final place - as this virtually meaningless game began.
Accordingly, there was little evidence of the noise and passion normally associated with compact but fully enclosed stadium high up on Spain´s Atlantic coast.
In fact it was almost ten minutes before the first serious shot of the evening was recorded. Depor´s ´Toro´ Acuna claiming the the distinction with a right foot shot from the edge of the area which went well wide of Ricardo´s goal.
The very next minute saw the home team bearing down once again on the United goal with Luque firing a shot which went across the face of goal before missing the far post by several inches.
United´s first attack of note came two minutes later when Forlan blazed wildly over after taking a good right wing cross from Fletcher.
The locals dotted around the stadium roared for a penalty in the 18th minute when Valeron appeared to held by Blanc but the referee, who was close at hand, ignored the claims.
And not to be outdone, United themselves put in an appeal for a spot-kick a couple of minutes later when Andrade appeared to handle the ball after halting an encourging Giggs break into the area. It would have been a harsh decision for the ball appear to spring up and strike the defender´s arm.
In the 32nd minute the home supporters were given something to celebrate when their favourites grabbed the opening goal. Luque was the architect with brilliant run down the left which left Blanc trailing in his wake. The Spanish international was clear and when his low, firm cross was drilled across goal Victor raced in to push the ball across the line.
United ´Reserves´ had held there own in the first half, but there was always the feeling that if a goal was goign to come, it would be to the benefit of the home side.
United´s management team used the half-time break to make a change to the personnel and the formation of the team. In came Scottish interantional Michael Stewart for Lynch as the structure of the team was switched from 5-3-2 to a more familiar 4-4-2.
The alterations were of course designed to give United a bigger representation in midfield, but they had little chance to take effect before Depor had increased their lead.
The second half was barely a minute old when Victor provided a brilliant right wing cross into the United area. Luque looked certain to score but at the vital moment appeared to stumble under pressure from Lynch´s challenge. The United defender also lost his footing and as a result could do nothing to stop the ball from striking the side of his head before
crossing Ricardo´s line.
Depor´s appetite for the contest seemed to have gained an edge during the interval for their was a zip about their play which hadn´t been evident earlier despite them having the better of the opening half.
It wasn´t however all one way traffic with United almost reducing the arrears on a couple of occasions. Fletcher was all set to acclaim his first senior with a good shot, but his joy was short-lived after Cesar had made a fine goal-line clearance. Giggs also cursed his luck in the 69th minute when he turned brilliantly to thump a shot against the foot of the post.
Both Richardson and Webber were sent from the bench to replace Giggs and Forlan in the 72nd minute as Sir Alex took the opportunity to give a run out to more of his fringe players.
Phil Neville ruled himself out of the quarter-final, first leg when he received his third yellow card of the competition for less than tidy challenge on Luque.
Deportivo La Coruna: Dani, Manuel Pablo, Andrade ( Djorovic, 64), Cesar, Capdevila; Victor ( Hector, 78), Duscher, Acuna, Fran ( Scaloni, 52); Valeron, Luque. Subs not used: Romero, Tristan, Sergio, Juanmi.
United: Ricardo, Lynch, Roche ( Stewart, 46), Blanc, O´Shea, Pugh; Fletcher, P Neville, Butt; Forlan ( Webber, 72), Giggs ( Richardson, 72). Subs not used: Carroll, May, Davis, Nardiello. "

"Here is a selection of the best comments...
"I was really looking forward to seeing the young lads playing against Depor, and I must say there is a lot of potential but the inexperience was so blatant. The passing was so sloppy at times and the young defenders were caught out a few times, but they showed good spirit. But the passing was really abysmal, they had no foresight to make little runs here and there and there seemed to be no communication. I feel sorry for Fletcher who looks very very good, should have had a goal but it was a good clearance. One thing I don’t understand is why he took off Forlan, I don’t care if Webber wants a go on the pitch, Forlan needs more football and tonight would have provided that but Fergie had other plans. All in all, it was inexperience and communication that let them down today but the future of the club looks pretty good!"
Rowan, Ireland
"Shouldn’t really read anything into the result tonight. Giggs was the best player on the pitch tonight but the team struggled and didn’t really make many real scoring chances. Fletcher was again outstanding and Richardson looked good when he came on. Roche was good in defence and Lynch was unlucky. The work rate from all the players was great but all in all we should look forward to the quarter-finals, or further still to the final at Old Trafford!"
Jo, Manchester
"I thought it was a good performance by the youngsters. Well done. Although Depor went out to make a point against United they were late, about one more win late, it was just a give away to them, so keep it up. I have not broken anything in my house watching the game, that means it really was a friendly. Let´s go for the title in the Premiership and European Cup. Bring it on."
Vadim, Charlotte, NC USA
"Wasn´t much of a game. Depor dominated throughout. Out of the young ones, I thought that Fletcher played quite well. I´m just excited for the quarters."

Depor boss backs Reds
Deportivo La Coruna boss Javier Irureta believes United are strong favourites to be crowned European champions this season, despite his side´s 2-0 win over the Reds.
Deportivo beat a youthful United team, but Irureta believes United are likely candidates - alongside Spanish pair Real Madrid and Barcelona - for the Champions League trophy as soon as Fergie recalls his big guns.
"United are the strong favourites along with those two," Irureta said. "I mean their A team, not the one we beat."
United and Barca both finished on 13 at the top of their respective groups, while Real scrambled past the finishing post with a 1-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow.
Friday morning´s draw promises to be a tense time as United could be drawn against nine-time European champions Real Madrid.

"The kids are alright
Sir Alex Ferguson last night insisted his Manchester United side have no fears about taking on European Champions Real Madrid. United have a one in three chance of meeting the Spanish giants and nine-times winners in the Champions League quarter-finals. Fergie watched his young stars of the future put on a brave display against Deportivo, but believes United will be a match for anyone once his big guns returns.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror
Bring on Real, says upbeat Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson last night relished the chance to settle Manchester United’s Champions League score with Real Madrid. United’s 2-0 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna still left them as winners of Group D and they now approach Friday’s draw for the last eight knowing that a meeting with the likes of Real, Inter Milan or even Arsenal awaits. Ferguson said: “I would be happy enough to meet somebody like Real Madrid.”
Ian Ladyman, Daily Mail
Shut it, Fergie
Robert Pires last night told Alex Ferguson to forget the mind games and keep his nose out of Arsenal´s business. Manchester United boss Fergie branded the Treble-chasing Gunners as over-confident, arrogant and full of triumphalism. But Highbury winger Pires, 30, hit back by insisting: "Let him look after his team - and let Arsene Wenger look after the Arsenal players. Mr Ferguson is trying to make us lose concentration by saying things like that, by saying Arsenal and its coach and its players are arrogant. "If that´s how he takes it, that´s up to him. Myself, I don´t want to get into a debate with Ferguson or the Manchester United players. We will see where we all stand in May."
Shaun Custis, The Sun
Fergie eyes Real deal - Deportivo 2 Man Utd 0
Alex Ferguson is licking his lips at the prospect of a European Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid. Manchester United have a one-in-three chance of facing the Spanish giants when the draw for the last eight is made on Friday. And boss Fergie admitted: "I would be very happy if we are paired with Real. Facing teams like them, Barcelona, Juventus and the rest is what the Champions League is all about."
David Facey, The Sun
Deportivo 2 Man United 0
This Champions League non-event certainly lived down to all expectations, as United slipped to probably the least painful defeat in their history. The result was totally insignificant in terms of qualification for the quarter-finals, with United runaway Group D winners and Deportivo condemned to the also-rans. And the impression both teams were merely going through the motions was impossible to escape in a match high on goalmouth incident but woefully low on quality. With their passionate fans cheering them on, Deportivo managed to rouse themselves more than United, who fielded a disjointed mix of nearly men and tired-looking senior players.
David Facey, The Sun
Arrogant? No, just confident
Arsene Wenger last night dismissed the latest sniper fire from Sir Alex Ferguson by insisting Arsenal will back up his words with a campaign of glory. The Manchester United manager latched on to Arsenal´s defeat at Blackburn to suggest Wenger´s "triumphalism" was the spur his men needed to take the title from north London. But as Wenger prepared to go into tonight´s make-or-break Champions League game at Valencia with a makeshift line-up, he fired back at Ferguson, saying his anger at Saturday´s Ewood Park debacle had not seen him kick any boots at his players.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror
Laurent´s old not gold
It was supposed to be the night Sir Alex Ferguson afforded the world a glimpse of the next generation of emerging young superstars at Manchester United. Instead it turned out to be the final curtain on the career of veteran defender Laurent Blanc, who has surely played his last game for United before retiring at the end of the season. There are no pressure-free games for United from now until the end of the season so, barring a major central-defensive crisis at Old Trafford, it is safe to assume Blanc´s career is now officially over. And it was not the way the 37-year-old World Cup and Euro 2000 winner will have wanted his glittering playing days to have ended, embarrassingly beaten for pace to concede the first goal and a shadow of the man who was once regarded as one of the most elegant centre-backs in the game.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror
Lesson for Lynch
They say misfortune can make a man grow stronger and young Manchester United defender Mark Lynch will hope the old maxim is correct as he reflects on an embarrassing start to his senior career. The 21-year-old defender was one of four inexperienced players given their head in this dead Champions League match by Sir Alex Ferguson last night. Alas, he marked his big night with an own goal.
