" Which stars will move on?" ( "Manchester Evening News")

With Ferguson keen to freshen up his squad that leaves a question mark hanging over the heads of several United stars. Here we take a look at the players who could be on their way out.

Laurent Blanc – the 37-year-old defender has barely figured since November and his lack of pace has been exposed this season. Out of contract in the summer, he will not stay on as a player, though a move into coaching could beckon.

Ricardo – Signed as a deputy to Fabien Barthez, he has had few chances to shine and has even had to wait behind Roy Carroll in the queue for first team starts. If a top young ‘keeper became available Ferguson might consider offers.

Fabien Barthez – After a dodgy second season, Barthez has been back to his best his season and losing him would be a big blow for United. But despite the Frenchman splashing out on a luxury pad, the rumours persist that he could leave in the summer, though Sir Alex Ferguson would be loathe to lose his number one number one.

Phil Neville – A useful squad player, the younger Neville is on the fringes of the first team at Old Trafford and is unlikely to get many starts when everyone is fit. His versatility is useful, but with John O’Shea, Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre all shining in defence he might have to move on to secure regular first team football.

Quinton Fortune – After the World Cup, Fortune was hoping this would be a breakthrough season, but injuries have hampered his progress and he’s drifted back to the outer reaches of United’s first team squad. Though undoubtedly talented, the emergence of Darren Fletcher will see him fall further down the pecking order and with his contract up for renewal he could make way for a top quality midfielder. ( il partira pas c sur!!!)

Michael Stewart – Stewart has seen fellow Scot Darren Fletcher steal his thunder as the top youngster set to break into the first team and it would be no surprise if he followed the example of Jonathan Greening and Mark Wilson in leaving.

Luke Chadwick – After a promising start to his Old Trafford career, Chadwick has been treading water for the last year and a half and a loan move to Reading could signal a more permanent drop down to Division One football.

Ryan Giggs – Sir Alex Ferguson would be loathe to lose a player that has given United’s a decade’s great service and remains one of the most talented midfielders in world football. However he would be sure to attract a huge fee from an Italian suitor and if a deal for a replacement was rubber-stamped he could leave for a new challenge. ( il reste c sur!!!!)

David Beckham – As with Giggs, it’s hard to see Beckham leaving Old Trafford. The England captain has been an integral part of United’s success and with image rights thrown in he remains a valuable commodity for the club. That though has not stopped the interest and Real Madrid could offer up to £40 million this summer, a fee that would allow Fergie to bring in the new faces he feels are necessary to freshen up his squad.

We had more bottle
Alex Ferguson has blasted Arsenal by claiming: We won the title because we kept our bottle. Ferguson was reacting at the end of a week in which Highbury boss Arsene Wenger reckoned his side had deserved to capture the trophy. He said: " We proved our mettle when it matters and that´s how you win championships." The United supremo pointed to their incredible run-in while the Gunners imploded as proof of their achievement." Fergie added: " Once we got the momentum going and hit our form, I knew these players were up for it. The focus was great, the team spirit was marvellous and we knew we were in with a hell of a chance."
Neil Custis, The Sun

United didn´t deserve it
Gilberto Silva claims Manchester United did not deserve to win the title. United players were furious after Gunners boss Arsene Wenger insisted they were only crowned champions because they had an easier run-in. Wenger refused to back down and believes the achievement of reaching the FA Cup final, along with narrowly losing the title, makes his team the best in England - regardless of what the Premiership table shows. Now Brazilian star Gilberto, 26, has revealed Wenger´s sentiments are shared by his players, who feel hard done-by. He told Sky Sports: " If you look over the championship then, no, Manchester United do not deserve to be champions because we stayed at the top nearly all season.
Eric Beauchamp, The Sun

Moyes: Let the party begin
David Moyes is happy for Manchester United to receive the Premiership trophy at Goodison - provided he can do the same at Old Trafford soon. Safety fears have prompted the police and Everton officials to issue an urgent plea to ticketless United fans to stay away tomorrow. But Moyes does not have a problem with Alex Ferguson´s champs taking centre-stage after the match. Especially if his side can have a party of their own to celebrate qualifying for Europe. Fergie fan Moyes said: " I think it is right the ceremony will take place at Everton after the game. In years to come I would like to think we could be going to Old Trafford to receive the trophy as champions."
Mike Ellis, The Sun

Fergie: we proved to be the best
Sir Alex Ferguson last night rubbished Arsene Wenger´s claim that Arsenal are still the best team in the country. The Gunners boss made the boast despite watching his players blow an eight-point lead as Fergie´s Manchester United claimed an eighth Premiership title. Fergie, who acknowledged Arsenal were the best team when they won the title last season, is amazed at Wenger´s reluctance to give United the credit they deserve. He said: " We proved our mettle when it mattered, which is how you win championships."

Moyes rolls out the Reds carpet – Everton boss calms storm
David Moyes welcomes Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United champions to Goodison Park tomorrow unperturbed by all the fuss over the presentation of the Premiership trophy. In fact, the Everton boss hopes it will be an occasion which lifts his men to the victory they need to assure a place in next season’s Uefa Cup. The former Preston chief said: “I’ve not been worried about the talk of whether they should get the trophy at our place or not.”
Chris Harper, Daily Star

Wrong Arsene, we’re the best
Sir Alex Ferguson last night responded to Arsenal claims that the best team in England did not win the Premiership title by laying out Manchester United’s claims for supremacy. A war of words has simmered between Highbury and Old Trafford in the six days since Arsenal’s home defeat by Leeds handed United the title. Ferguson said: " We have sailed through the games on which everyone said the title was going to be decided. We proved our mettle when it mattered.”

Beware of football fame, Keane warns Rooney
Roy Keane has warned Wayne Rooney and other young player against the perils of sporting stardom – and urged them to make sure they are getting the right advice. Manchester United’s skipper has been hugely impressed with Everton striker Rooney, whom he meets for the first time at Goodison Park tomorrow, and only hopes he receives the care and attention such a talented teenager requires. Keane said: “I hope Rooney is looked after, but I’m sure he will be. It’s very rare I get as excited about a player as I have about him, but when I’ve sat down and watched him he has been absolutely unbelievable. He’s got me out of my seat a few times this season.”
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

Snarling Irish terrier learns how to smile
Roy Keane has been the recipient of some unusual correspondence in the last few months. Letter from old women recommending surgeons who have replaced their hips have been commonplace, while only this week the Manchester United captain received a bizarre request from a magazine about dogs. It came in the form of a questionnaire and asked him to match the following celebrities to a canine breed: Sir Alex Ferguson, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Blair, Patrick Vieira and David Beckham. French poodles sprang immediately to mind, but it might have been more interesting had they asked the dog-loving Keane what breed he most resembled. It would, one assumes, have to be something with a snarl and plenty of bite.

I can´t wait to send Hammers down
Steve Bruce is praying his Birmingham side send West Ham down on Sunday - to end an EIGHT-YEAR wait for revenge. Blues boss Bruce will never forget the day he missed out on the Premiership title at Upton Park. And the ex-Manchester United skipper will never forgive how Hammers players celebrated after their 1-1 draw saw the crown go to Blackburn. The thirst for vengeance remains and Bruce admitted: " I have been waiting a long time for this. I still remember losing the league down there and how delirious they were. The fans were celebrating and the players were going down the tunnel giving it High Fives. So I´m looking forward to this match immensely - for the way they acted towards us, for being so delighted that we hadn´t won the title. Not that I bear a grudge!"
Janine Self, The Sun

Rio´s Hammers dream
Rio Ferdinand is praying West Ham can complete a Premiership treble. The England defender clinched the league title with Manchester United and then saw former club Leeds beat Arsenal to stay up. Now Ferdinand wants his original mates at West Ham to avoid relegation. He said: " I have my fingers crossed for West Ham. The club means a great deal to me. It is where I learned my football and I owe them a lot. I just cannot imagine the thought of them being relegated."

United eye Claude
Manchester United have reportedly bid for Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele. The French international is on much lower wages than Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane. And Madrid appear unwilling to give him a big pay hike, alerting United’s interest. They seem likely to land him if they are willing to pay £10m.

" TRANSFER STUFF " ( "Red Issue")

Story by Editor 11 May 2003

The usual suspects -Barthez, Ronaldinho, Defoe, Athirson, Bellion, Kewell

  • Monaco president Jean-Louis Campora has scotched rumours of a Fab return to the principality: " It is out of question from a Monaco point of view. We are very happy with our two keepers, Flavio Roma and Tony Sylva. We also have Stephane Porato who will come back from loan at Creteil. So this problem is not topical."
  • The Mirror reckon that we will offer Barthez as bait for Ronaldinho to Paris St Germain in a swap worth £16 million. However PSG chairman Francis Graille said: " There is no contact. I hear talk about any barter at the moment, but everything is false." The Mirror then say that we will try to get Rustu Recber or Paul Robinson. One is free and the latter is not.
  • The NOTW saysd that Jermain Defoe says he’s doing one if Worst Ham go down. United have been linked.
  • As we reported last Sunday, most papers say that United are interested in Brazilian left back, Athirson, who is owned by Juve but is on loan at Flamenco. Fergie is quoted in the Screws as saying that Martin Ferguson is in Brazil trying to find a left back.
  • David Bellion plays a straight bat in The People: " I was very flattered to have caught the attention of Manchester United.

" You see the kind of quality players they have. To know a coach like Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in you is very flattering and good for your confidence.

" I will wait and see what the offers are but I would like to stay in the Premiership. It depends on the options.

" I came to Sunderland when I was 18. It is a great souvenir that I think I am a better player than when I first came.

" I am out of contract and I will be joining another club. I don´t think I will sign a new contract at Sunderland. I cannot talk about Manchester United´s interest because I am still under contract with Sunderland.

" I just have to wait and see what happens. I am only 20 and I want to have a good career."

  • The Mail on Sunday say that we will move for Harry Kewell after he ‘rejected a £50,000 contract with Leeds’

Les dirigeants mancuniens posent leurs conditions.

David Beckham pourrait quitter Manchester United contre 50 millions d´euros.

Beckham valued at ´£35m´

Beckham has been subject to intense transfer speculation
Manchester United have put a £35m price tag on England captain David Beckham.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon told the BBC he would seriously consider any offer of that magnitude.

" It would be remiss of us not to," Kenyon said.

" That is the case for David Beckham and anyone else in the squad. David is a critical part of the team but things change.

" Ultimately players retire, so for any key figure in the team there is a life-span.

" Even if David sees out the rest of the career at United there will be a time when we have to replace him."

Beckham watch: the latest
Beckham has long been the subject of speculation regarding his future at Old Trafford, with United´s Champions´ League conquerors Real Madrid thought to be heading the list of potential buyers.

However, earlier this week Kenyon had appeared to end such speculation by saying: " You don´t spend 12 months negotiating a new contract to give up on it 12 months later.

" We re-signed David because we saw him as part of our squad for the next three years.

" It´s all about continuity and David is one player we want to form that continuity round."
