" Beckham braced for change "
David Beckham has admitted he expects to see some new faces at Manchester United next season. The England skipper finally ended the frenzied speculation surrounding his own future this week when he confirmed he had no intention of quitting the club in favour of a big-money summer move to Real Madrid, although he does expect the club to be active in the transfer market. " You always look to strengthen the squad," Beckham told MUTV. " At this club, every time you win something you look at what you are going to do the following year. Immediately after we won the Treble in 1999, people were asking ´what are you going to do now´. We just wanted to do it again and while we haven´t managed that, we have moved on and carried on winning titles."

Their name´s on the trophy: United´s eighth Premiership title in 11 seasons has seen them reassert their superiority in English football and lay the foundations for further success
´United will dominate for many years´
By Matt Dickinson, Chief Football Correspondent
THE championship trophy has been reclaimed from Arsenal and the sun is shining for Manchester United supporters. Happiness is in the Salford air and the majority of United fans probably would not begrudge a victory for Everton tomorrow to give David Moyes’s side a place in the Uefa Cup.
Generosity of spirit should come easy to United supporters after an eighth title in 11 seasons and, in such joyous circumstance, it would be nice if they could finally acknowledge the huge role played by Martin Edwards in building the Old Trafford empire. It will not happen. A decrepit Laurent Blanc has more chance of being clapped into his belated retirement than the man who, tomorrow, will watch his last game as United chairman after 23 years.
It is the end of an era that began when his father, Louis, joined the United board on the day after the Munich air disaster in 1958, and the legacy could scarcely be greater than a 67,000-seat stadium, a team to fill it and the riches to sustain one of Europe’s superclubs. The Edwards dynasty must have done something right in 45 years, but there will be no fanfare to mark the end tomorrow, not even a pat on the back.
“One day someone will look back at the history of Manchester United and say ‘when did all this start?’ ” Edwards said. “And it will be this period just gone ( the past 20 years) they will look back at. Eight championships, the European Cup, six FA Cups. It has been phenomenal. The credit will come. It might be in 20 years, it might not even be in my lifetime, but someone will eventually look back and say somebody was doing something right behind the scenes.
“At first you think ‘why am I not getting the credit for this?’ Then it doesn’t arrive and you think ‘don’t kid yourself, don’t upset yourself about it.’ I don’t get bitter. The satisfaction for me is that, after 23 years as chairman, I think the club is beginning to get the full benefit of everything that has been done. Manchester United is in a dominant position in English football, a very dominant position. Provided it manages itself sensibly, it can dominate for many, many more years. Even more so.
“Only Real Madrid have done better in Europe recently and they aren’t living in the real world. They have had one reprieve with selling the training ground, but I am not sure who will bail them out next time. The question for United is whether you chase them in the short term and I don’t think you do. You have to be sensible. Our day will come.”
Prudence has carried United this far but, as Edwards has discovered, balancing the books does not win you friends on the terraces. To be a popular chairman, you have to go out and plunge a club £79 million in debt, as Peter Ridsdale did at Leeds United. Edwards acknowledges the comparison with a wry smile.
“I like Peter, but why did he become very popular? Because he overspent to bankroll the team. Leeds did exceptionally well for a short period of time and everybody loved it, but the day of reckoning is always going to come. There is no point in popularising yourself at that cost. You have to look at the long term and that is what I have always done.”
It is easy to imagine what might have happened at Old Trafford under a Ridsdale regime. Sir Alex Ferguson’s every whim would have been satisfied by an eager chairman, no matter the consequences. Edwards stood firm, despite the personal cost and, to his frustration, the chairman has never shed the image of parsimony.
“Most of the players Alex asked for he got,” he said. “There was the occasional exception and ( Gabriel) Batistuta was one. He was asking for £3 million net, which is £5 million gross, and we are talking a few years ago. Our top player at the time was on £1 million, so it would have destroyed our wage structure.
“Some of the time it was the players who turned us down. I thought we had a deal for Gazza but, at the last minute, he chose Spurs. With Shearer, particularly the second time we went for him, we pushed the boat out for him. With Patrick Kluivert, he also turned it down. I had agreed the price with AC Milan, but he didn’t want to come. I think he said he would only go to Arsenal.”
It was no fault of Edwards that United did not purchase Zinedine Zidane, the world’s finest player, in the summer of 1996 when the Frenchman moved from Bordeaux to Juventus. As Ferguson has admitted, he “couldn’t decide Zidane’s best position” alongside Eric Cantona.
The directors were also willing Chief Football Correspondent to go for Patrick Vieira, the Arsenal midfield player, whom Edwards would have loved to have seen at Old Trafford. “Roy Keane and Vieira in midfield could have dominated everyone, but it was a question of Verón or Vieira,” Edwards said. “Verón was available and Vieira wasn’t. Arsenal weren’t going to sanction that, especially while Wenger was there.”
Some United fans have never forgiven Edwards for twice coming close to selling the club, although it is forgotten that, when he entered negotiations with Michael Knighton in 1989, even Ferguson, with whom he has had a turbulent relationship, sympathised. “He felt he could not win over the fans and that he had no other way out,” Ferguson wrote in his autobiography. “I was sorry for him.”
“We also needed to rebuild the Stretford End at a cost of £10 million and I had big debts going back to the original rights issue of 1979,” Edwards said. “My house was in hock to the bank, but people aren’t interested in that now.” Edwards has also never veered from his argument that the £623 million deal with BSkyB would have been good for the club, although the takeover was blocked by the Office of Fair Trading in April 1999.
The hostility towards Edwards, however, predates the Knighton episode, the BSkyB takeover, tabloid revelations about his private life and the fallouts with Ferguson. Edwards felt the animosity long before he began the sale of shares that recently saw him ranked as the 299th richest Briton in The Sunday Times Rich List, with a personal fortune of £108 million.
The scepticism towards him can only have been passed down from his father’s time and it developed on the back of the myth that, because he went to public school, Edwards was a rugby man. It has never been Edwards’s style to court popularity, though. The strange thing is that the attitude from the terraces has never softened with all the triumphs. Edwards has never asked for gratitude, just a little acknowledgement of his part in the success story. As he says, it will happen but, perhaps, only long after he has gone.
On Ferguson´s successor
FINDING a successor to Sir Alex Ferguson is not my decision and it is one that I am happy to leave to someone else. It is an enormous move and we don’t know yet whether it will be in two years or not.
I didn’t think there was a cat in hell’s chance of Alex changing his mind about retirement. I was surprised when he did and it was only just in time ( as United had lined up his successor).
One person you would have to put in the frame is Martin O’Neill. He won two League Cups with Leicester City and you see what happened there after he left. Then he went on to Celtic and all the success he has had there. He broke Rangers’ dominance and has now reached a Uefa Cup final, so he is doing it in Europe. The only question now is whether he can handle the really big players at United, because there is a big difference. He would have to be in the frame, but it can change so quickly.
A couple of years ago Ottmar Hitzfeld ( from Bayern Munich) would have been on everybody’s list, but I am not sure now.
On the class of 1993-94
ALEX was an easy choice as manager. We knew all about his achievements at Aberdeen and I had dealt with him when we bought Gordon Strachan and he was on our side. He had to go through the learning curve. He didn’t know as much about English football as he thought. In the early years, that meant missing one or two players. I am thinking of John Barnes as a particular example.
If it had been down to some fans, Alex would have been out in 1989, before the FA Cup run, and even in 1995. It is not easy when the fans get boisterous and vociferous, but we never panicked. We rode it out and we stood buy him. I am sure Alex appreciates the support.
We have had some fantastic players throughout my time, but the best team as an XI was probably the 1993-94 side. Schmeichel in goal and a solid defence of Parker, Bruce, Pallister and Irwin. Robson couldn’t always get into that team because of Ince and Keane, and then you had Giggs and Kanchelskis on the flanks. With Hughes up front, Cantona could lie deep. That side could tear teams to bits.
Un sondage sur Wenger
Arsene Wenger says Arsenal are still the best team in England. Is he right?
No he´s talking nonsense again ( 92.2%)
Yes they´re a great team ( 7.8%)

=>SIR ALEX REND HOMMAGE AU " PRESIDENT".......
" Fergie says farewell"
Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to departing defender Laurent Blanc on the eve of his last match as a professional footballer.
Fergie has confirmed that Blanc will play some part of the Reds´ match against Everton on Sunday before hanging up his boots following a glittering career at club and international level. His time at Old Trafford may have been brief but he´s been better than the manager could have hoped.
" Laurent will play a part of the game on Sunday. And I hope our fans give him all the applause they could possibly could give him," Fergie said.
" He deserves it because throughout his career, not just at United, he has been an absolutely fantastic professional.
" He is also a great human being, an absolutely brilliant man. I couldn´t have been more delighted with my two-year association with him.
" I am delighted what I got from him. I couldn´t have got more."
Laurent has been a steadying influence in the Reds rear-guard on the pitch, but he´s also played a vital role on the training ground in helping the United defenders of the future develop.
" It hasn´t just been what Laurent did on the pitch but also what he did off it with the young players. It was marvellous, really first class," Sir Alex continued in the Manchester Evening News.
" He gave our young lads the assured confidence of knowing their job. He has been terrific, a truly marvellous pro. The respect he commanded in our dressing room was immense.
" He is a great player. His greatest qualities were his reading of the game, his composure on the ball and his vision. His control of situations when you are under the cosh and the way he brings the ball into midfield is marvellous. He brought a calm to it and our young defenders are lucky to have had the time with him. It´s been a great education for them.
" He has also showed us great temperament in that he was aware of a lot of criticism last season early on, unfair of course, but the critics were simply looking for a scapegoat. But they picked the wrong one in Laurent because he was fantastic for us."
And Blanc will end his career - in which he´s won trophies in Spain, Italy and France as well as the World Cup and European Championships - lifting a piece of silverware aloft.
" I am delighted he was able to win a title medal with Manchester United this season," Fergie concluded.
" It´s a fitting end for him."

" Kenyon promises cash "
Peter Kenyon says that Sir Alex Ferguson will be given money to spend in the transfer market this summer.
Previously, Kenyon had said that the manager may have to sell before he brought any new faces into Old Trafford but now the Chief Executive that will only happen if the Boss wants to spend more than he´s given.
" Money is available and if we go over the budget then clearly it´s a case of disposing of players as well as bringing them in," he explained.
" But that´s not a headline, it´s a normal course of business, the way we do things. Manchester United is about evolution, not revolution."
Kenyon´s earlier comments about retaining the size of the current squad are believed to refer to the likes of Laurent Blanc and David May - who look certainties to depart United in the close season.

" Gattuso links himself to Reds"
AC Milan and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso - known as Rino - says that United are interested in buying him this summer.
The abrasive player starred in the 0-0 draw with Inter in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday, and says that the Reds are one of several clubs sniffing around him.
" My agent informs me that there are a number of English clubs interested in signing me, including Man United," the former Glasgow Rangers man told Scottish newspaper The Daily Record.
" I´ve another two years on my contract at Milan and I´m happy here but Man United are also a huge club and I would be interested.
" If they do make a bid for me it would be a hard decision as I have a great relationship with Milan and their supporters."
Gattuso covered every blade of grass in the San Siro in the first part of the UEFA semi-final, impressing the fans who barracked him following Italy´s ignominious exit from the 2002 World Cup. He believes that his experiences in Scotland make him perfect for the English league.
" I think English teams like me because my style of play is suited to the Premiership," he said.
" I´m only 25 at the moment and I would like to play in England at some stage of my career.
" But for now the only thing on my mind is helping Milan reach the Champions League final."

Champs eye Sam
Manchester United want African sensation Samuel Eto’o as an £8m strike partner for Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Premiership champions have sent representatives to Spain to sign the Cameroon star. Eto’o was on fire for Real Mallorca as they handed Real Madrid a sensational 5-1 defeat on Saturday, a result which throws the Spanish title race wide open. The only snag is that Mallorca want Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan as part of the deal. Eto’o is only 22, but has already played in a World Cup. His 11 goals this season have helped unfashionable Mallorca climb to sixth in La Liga.
