LES FAITS MARQUANTS
Manchester United tient enfin sa revanche. Privés de titre la saison dernière par Arsenal, les Red Devils retrouvent les sommets du championnat d´Angleterre. Les hommes d´Alex Ferguson, vainqueurs samedi de Charlton ( 4-1) avec notamment un triplé de Van Nistelrooy, accrochent un 15e titre à leur palmarès à une journée de la fin de l´exercice grâce à la défaite de leur premier poursuivant, Arsenal, face à Leeds ( 2-3), qui assure ainsi son maintien.

Les Gunners savaient, en effet, que seule une victoire pouvait leur permettre de disputer le titre à MU lors de la dernière journée. Le club londonien n´a jamais réussi à prendre l´ascendant sur son adversaire en courant désespérement après le score.

En vain. Arsenal, désormais à 8 points du leader, ne peut plus refaire son retard et ce malgré son match en retard à disputer à Southampton. L´équipe coachée par Arsène Wenger pourra peut-être se consoler avec la Cup dont elle dispute la finale le 17 mai.

Courte mais précieuse victoire de Newcastle face à Birmingham City ( 1-0). Les Magpies sont ainsi assurés de terminer le championnat à la troisième place et gagnent par la même occasion leur billet pour la prochaine Ligue des champions.

Chelsea et Liverpool, tous deux battus respectivement par West Ham ( 0-1) et Manchester City ( 1-2), se disputeront le dernier ticket pour la C1 lors de la dernière journée. Hasard du calendrier, les Blues accueilleront les Reds à Stamford Bridge.

Dans le bas du classement, Bolton, 17e, et West Ham, 18e, lutteront à distance pour le maintien. Les deux équipes ne sont séparées qu´à la différence de buts, pour le moment favorable aux Wanderers.
