MAN UTD 4EVER!!!
Middlesbrough´s Geremi finds himself unexpectedly thrown into the intense spotlight on Beckham.
The Cameroonian has been an outstanding loan signing from Real Madrid at the Riverside this season and boss Steve McClaren - a former Man Utd coach - is desperate to make him a full signing.
But according to The Express newspaper on Thursday Beckham will definitely be sold to Real for £25m - with Geremi moving to Old Trafford to take the value of the deal over the £30m mark.

" Sporting director speaks out "
Real sporting director Jorge Valdano has again reiterated that the Bernabeu club will not be making a move to Madrid.
After yesterday claiming the Spanish giants would “never, never, never” sign David Beckham, Valdano has again moved to dispel any lingering rumours over a possible transfer.
Madrid came under fire after it was pointed out that, in previous summers, the club had denied moving to sign players before actually unveiling them as Real players.
Such denials immediately preceded the signings of Ronaldo last summer and Zinedine Zidane in the previous close-season.
Valdano is quoted as saying: " We made a very clear point to bring an end to this matter," he said.
" It is not true that this controversy is similar to that which existed in the months leading up to the signings of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.
" This is the first time the club have used an official channel to issue an emphatic denial," he added.
The speculation raves on in Thursday’s newspapers despite the fact that both clubs have categorically refuted the rumours.
Transfer Speculation - Arrivals ( Summer 2003)
Speculation over the contents of Sir Alex´s summer shopping list began early in summer 2003, with United knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and a rumoured £38million bid from the Spanish giants for David Beckham. The season hadn´t ended before the tabloids starting guessing who the manager would bring in. Here´s who they´ve plumped for so far...

United eye lamps
Frank Lampard is a shock target for Manchester United. The Chelsea midfielder, 24, has been tracked for months by United boss Alex Ferguson. Lamps has helped fire Blues to the brink of the Champions League with eight goals. A source confirmed: " United have had scouts looking at him at almost every away match. They are keen. Fergie is a big fan and is looking for more firepower from midfield. But Frank´s happy at Chelsea." Lampard moved to Stamford Bridge from West Ham for £11million two years ago. He struggled to make an impact in his first season. But he has shone this year, forcing an England comeback.

Fergie may be in a fix
Alex Ferguson faces a High Noon showdown today over his claim that the European Cup draw was rigged. That outburst could cost the Manchester United manager a heavy fine and a touchline ban of up to two months in next season´s Champions League. But at least he will NOT face legal action from the man who paired United with Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. Austrian FA president Friedrich Stickler branded Fergie " insulting and unprofessional" but said he would drop the matter because the Scot had apologised. Fergie suggested UEFA made sure his team were drawn against the Spaniards in a bid to make sure United did not make the final, at Old Trafford on May 28. He claimed: " They don´t want us there." At first, UEFA bigwigs dismissed the remark as " silly". But then they decided to charge him with disrepute for casting doubt over the integrity of the draw.
David Facey, The Sun
Uefa will be tough on Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson will have the book thrown at him by UEFA today for claiming the Champions League draw was fixed when Manchester United were paired with Real Madrid. He enraged European football´s governing body by alleging they wanted Spanish and Italian teams in the final. But the Old Trafford boss could be fined £50,000 and banned from the touchline because it was his second offence. Fergie insisted: " Real Madrid - they have a nice draw, they must have picked it themselves. The Spanish or Italian teams don´t play each other, how do you think they work that out? They don´t want us in the final, that´s for sure."

Real chief: I won´t bend it over Beckham
Real Madrid have repeated their promise not to sign David Beckham from Euro rivals Manchester United. After discovering their " never, never, never" pledge had served only to fuel speculation that they are working to a plan to relieve United of their England skipper, Real repeated the mantra. Real Sporting director Jorge Valdano is angry the official denials are still being treated with suspicion and claimed the Spanish giants would not perform a Ronaldo-style U-turn and sign £38million-rated Beckham. Real issued a statement last summer insisting they had no intention of signing Brazil World Cup star Ronaldo, then paid Inter Milan £26million for the striker 22 days later. But Valdano insisted there would be no repeat with Becks. " We made a very clear point to bring an end to this matter," he said. " It is not true that this controversy is similar to that which existed in the months leading up to the signings of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.

How United rake it in
Manchester United lead the way in the Premiership - both on and off the field. Sir Alex Ferguson´s men have streaked five points ahead of Arsenal in the race for the title. And they are light years beyond the rest in the financial market in terms of profit, sponsorship and gate receipts and it shows the huge difference between the marketability of both clubs. However, their huge profits in all of the categories are offset by wages, transfer fees and running costs before the final pre-tax figures are announced which result in a loss for Arsenal and £20m profit for United.

Gonzalez is bidding to be the Juan for United
Manchester United target Mariano Gonazalez wants to move to Old Trafford - after talking to midfielder Juan Veron. Argentine midfielder Gonzalez, rated at £3million, is one of the names being lined up by United this summer - even if David Beckham decides to stay. Racing Avellaneda star Gonzalez, 21, said: " I spoke to Veron on the telephone. He wanted to congratulate me about being called up to the Argentina side recently and he told me great things about United.

Mad for Carlos
Alex Ferguson´s No 2 Carlos Queiroz has been offered the coach´s job at Athletico Madrid. The relationship between the Spaniard´s supremo Jesus Gil and current coach Luis Aragones hit a new low at the weekend after a 1-0 defeat by Osasuna - on the day of Athletico´s centenary celebrations. The club first sounded out Queiroz when Manchester United travelled to Madrid to face Real in the European Cup quarter finals last month.

Loud-mouth Fergie faces 3-game ban
Sir Alex Ferguson faces a three-game European touchline ban today for his recent outrageous remarks about Uefa. Fergie caused fury when he alleged that the Champions League quarter final draw had been fixed to pair his Manchester United side up with Real Madrid.

£10m - Leeds slap tag on Robbo
Hard-up Leeds are demanding a whopping £10m for England keeper Paul Robinson. The Elland Road club have accepted that sought-after Robinson will have to be sold to help ease debts of £80m - but they are not prepared to let one of the few stars they have left go on the cheap. The news is set to spark a bidding war between title-rivals Manchester United and Arsenal in the summer, with Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson favourite to land the 23-year-old.
Jeremy Cross, Daily Star
Let´s shake on £25m
David Beckham will move to Real Madrid for £25m, with midfielder Geremi coming in the opposite direction to take the total transfer valuation to over £30m - a new British record. The leaking of the plan prompted Real´s comprehensive denial, in a vain bid to reassure Manchester United they are not responsible for the wall-to-wall speculation surrounding the England captain. But the reality is that they have let it slip to sources in Madrid they will pay up to £25m and will add to the deal at least one player acceptable to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane´s eager to ease the pressure
Roy Keane has admitted the pressure is on his Manchester United team as they attempt to settle the Premiership title race this weekend. Having trailed in Arsenal´s wake for most of the current campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson´s side can strip the Gunners of their crown by the end of this weekend. Victory for United in their lunchtime meeting with Charlton on Saturday would mean an Arsenal defeat, or even a draw, at home to Leeds on Sunday would see the Premiership trophy returning to Old Trafford after an absence of two years. " The pressure can take it´s toll on people and the pressure is now on us," Keane said. " Charlton came here last season and got a goalless draw so we can´t take anything for granted."
Peter Edwards, Daily Express
Hofland firmly in Gunners´ sights
Arsenal plan to step up their search for a centre-half as manager Arsene Wenger has identified his defence as they key area to be improved next season. Their initial target is PSV Eindhoven defender Kevin Hofland, a player Sir Alex Ferguson has also marked down as a potential recruit for Manchester United. Hofland has been higly recommended to Ferguson by his former team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy, but until recently has carried a £15million price tag.

Milan pair also in hunt
Inter Milan are ready to compete with Real Madrid for the services of David Beckham. The club´s president Massimo Moratti will enter the bidding if it becomes clear Manchester United are ready to sell the England captain in the summer. Inter spokesman Bruno Bartalozzi said: " Massimo believes Beckham is a great player. If it was confirmed about Beckham leaving, Inter would be interested."

Makelele attracting United´s interest
By Matt Dickinson and Oliver Kay
On the move: the signing of Makelele would serve the dual purpose of strengthening United´s midfield at the expense of Real
THERE could be one midfield player moving between Manchester United and Real Madrid but, rather than David Beckham, the most likely candidate is Claude Makelele. The France player is high on Sir Alex Ferguson’s wish list as he attempts to turn his team into European champions.
Weakening Real is a good way to start and, while there has not been formal contact between the clubs, Ferguson has good reason to think that he might be successful with a bid for Makelele. The holding player is the lowest-paid of Real’s regular starting XI and, unless he is given a new contract at the Bernabéu this summer, is understood to be ready for a move, if it can make him rich.
At 30, Makelele is only 18 months younger than Roy Keane, but he was far more mobile than the United captain in both legs of the European Cup quarter-final between the clubs. Keane’s hip surgery has forced him to accept that he can never be the rampaging midfield tyrant of a few years ago.
Makelele, who has won 24 caps for France, has a fearsome tackle, wonderful athleticism and is underrated as a passer. He is the best of Real’s defensive midfield players, although he is not quite in the same league as Patrick Vieira, the Arsenal captain who has been a long-term target for Real.
Makelele would cost less than £10 million because of his age and United’s interest in him is another complication to the continuing saga involving Beckham.
Real denied that they were planning a move for the England captain in a statement this week. If that proves to be true, and Real have a history of being disingenuous in their public denials, Ferguson may be the most disappointed. Selling Beckham to Real would increase Ferguson’s chances of luring Makelele and would also provide him with the funds to rebuild his team.
A new goalkeeper is essential after the collapse of Fabien Barthez’s form and the United manager also believes that he must recruit more players with pace and the ability to beat opponents, which explains why Jermain Defoe, the West Ham United striker, and Ronaldinho are also on his list.
Ferguson’s prime summer target remains Ronaldinho, the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil forward, but a proposed £10 million deal for the 23-year-old is being held up by complications over his image rights. The commercial rights are owned by SportFive, a marketing company that claims it is owed a sum in excess of £5 million for setting up his original transfer from Gremio, the Brazilian club, in the summer of 2001.
Negotiations with Roberto Assis, the player’s brother and agent, advanced swiftly last month, to the point that United felt that the deal was close to conclusion, but an agreement between PSG and SportFive is still some way off.
In addition to a transfer fee to the French club, United may be forced to pay a sum to SportFive to secure the rights to Ronaldinho’s image, which is of considerable value.
Sources at Old Trafford have described the situation as “very complicated and highly sensitive”, but they remain confident that a deal will be reached to the satisfaction of all parties.

Real truth behind denial over Beckham
From Stephen Burgen in Barcelona
SO THAT is definitely it — David Beckham is not going to Real Madrid. Or is he? Real’s lengthy denial on Tuesday has merely stoked the fire beneath the smoke of rumour. This, no doubt, was the intention. After all, why deny something that is not doing you or your business any harm and is keeping your affairs exactly where you like them to be — in the public eye?
Real’s display of irritation about the Beckham story is entirely bogus. They are a great football team, but they are also a product and like their product to be talked about. The Beckham saga is free advertising. As with the “will he, won’t he” Ronaldo saga, the pro-Madrid football press has done little to dampen speculation.
The pattern of rumour and denial is a classic gambit by Florentino Pérez, the Real president, in particular the story that Beckham is unhappy at Manchester United and that Sir Alex Ferguson, his manager, would be pleased to see him go. This allows Pérez to make it seem that it is the player who is making the running, giving him greater leverage when it comes to cutting a deal. Ronaldo said that, when Real come looking for you, it is futile to resist, as though he were speaking about the Spanish Inquisition.
We heard similar utterings from Real over the signings of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, when both club and players denied that any deal was in the works. Ronaldo was signed in the last few minutes before the transfer window closed last August.
Yesterday, Jorge Valdano, Real’s sporting director, reiterated the denial over Beckham published on the club’s website, pointing out that it was the first time that the club had used official channels to issue such a statement. Valdano claimed that there was no parallel between the run-up to the Zidane and Ronaldo signings.
However, the key figure in all this is not Valdano, but Pérez. Like many other Spanish club presidents, Pérez made his considerable fortune in construction. He is a shrewd businessman, a brilliant publicist and, above all, a showman. When he ran for the presidency in 2000, he said that either Luis Figo would join Real from Barcelona, their arch enemies, or he would personally pay for everyone’s season ticket.
He said that he had a vision of a club that fielded the world’s best players, adding that Real would outstrip Manchester United in the marketing side of the game. It does not take a genius to see that if you wanted to hurt United on the marketing front, especially in Asia, you would try to capture their most valuable asset.
In Ronaldo, they already have one of Japan’s two most popular footballers; with Beckham, they would have both. As it is, Ronaldo more or less earns his keep via shirt sales, while Zidane has made the club popular throughout the Arab world and has helped Real to sell their television channel in the Middle East.
Real miss no opportunity for publicity. While the Barça players paraded with an anti-war banner before a recent league match, Real got themselves all over Spanish television by sending a consignment of shirts to the Basra football team.
In the case of Figo, Pérez made a deal with Joan Gaspart, who was then running for the Barcelona presidency, that he would not make a move for the Portugal midfield player until Gaspart was elected. In retrospect, this, too, was a coup for Pérez, because Gaspart was a disastrous president and was forced to resign this year.
Of course, Real do not need Beckham, but that is beside the point. Pérez has raised the ante by playing three aces in Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo. There is only one ace left in the pack and that is Beckham. To sign anyone else — such as a defender to replace the ageing Fernando Hierro — would be an anticlimax and that is not Pérez’s style. In any case, he and Valdano have promised the fans that each summer they will sign one “galactico”.
It is hardly a gamble. With Beckham and Posh on board, Real will be the undisputed international market leader in football business. The club will never be out of the news and not just for what it does on the field. And, as a bonus, the stock of one of its closest rivals will have fallen, in more senses than one.

Ferguson widens net in search of future
By Oliver Kay
IN ADDITION to his pursuit of Claude Makelele, Ronaldinho and other top-class players in an effort to reconstruct his Manchester United empire, Sir Alex Ferguson is slowly assembling what he believes will be a new generation of stars from overseas.
Few are likely to flourish during what remains of Ferguson’s reign at Old Trafford, but he is casting his net far and wide in his renewed commitment to producing young players.
United have already secured the signatures of Jonathan Spector and Markus Neumayr, who will arrive in the summer from the United States and Germany respectively, and they will be followed to Manchester by Floribert Ngalula, a 16-year-old midfield player who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and raised in Belgium, where he had been progressing through Anderlecht’s academy system.
Ferguson has frequently expressed concerns over the FA’s academy regulations, which prevent clubs from signing English youngsters who are not in their immediate “catchment area”, but over the past 12 months, since restructuring his youth system, he has sought to exploit a loophole that allows them to import young talent from overseas, as Arsenal have been doing for some time.
United won the FA Youth Cup last week with what was — with the exception of Mads Timm, a Denmark youth international, an entirely homegrown squad — but Ferguson has urged his scouting staff to cast the net farther and wider over the past year. In March, they gave a trial to two Zambian under-17 internationals, Dominic Yobe and David Nkausu.
The immediate future for Ferguson is far less rosy, though, given that he is likely to be fined several thousand pounds by Uefa for his suggestion last month that the European Cup quarter-final draw, in which United faced Real Madrid, may have been fixed.
He has since written to European football’s governing body to explain his remarks, but Uefa’s disciplinary body is likely to take a dim view when it meets today.
