MOST SIGNIFICANT STATS

Four days after their European aspirations were extinguished at the theatre of shattered dreams, Manchester United revert to the objective of picking up the only remaining piece of silverware available to them and winning an eighth Premier League title in eleven years.

United played their part in a classic Champions League Quarter-final with holders Real Madrid. Despite a high quality, mesmeric hat trick from Ronaldo, United won the game 4-3, but lost the tie 6-5 on aggregate. Two second half goals from sub David Beckham were not enough on the night.

The Red Devils go into the weekend at the top of the table, but by the time of this late Sunday afternoon kick off, may find themselves overtaken by Arsenal. Victory for the Gunners at lowly Bolton on Saturday, would be enough for the defending champions to leapfrog United and return to pole position.

Sir Alex Ferguson´s side have 74 points with three to play. Arsenal have 71 points with four to play and a superior goal difference of just one.

United have racked up more wins in the Premiership than any other club ( 22), have claimed 51 points from a last possible 63, suffered just two defeats in 22, are currently enjoying a top division season best 15 match unbeaten run and seven-game undefeated away sequence, and own the tightest top division defence with just 32 goals conceded in 35 games.

Since the 3-1 Boxing Day reverse at Middlesbrough, United have won 12 and drawn three top flight games, put themselves at the top of the Current Form table, maintained the best disciplinary record in the top League ( one red, 42 yellow cards) and in Ruud van Nistrelrooy boast the clubs leading scorer with 42 goals, 20 of which have come in the League. Indeed in two seasons at Old Trafford the Dutch striker now scored 78 club goals, 43 of them in the Premiership.

So much for United, what about the opposition? Tottenham showed signs of much early season promise and even led the table at the end of August. But they have gradually slipped down and with two victories in eight games, and four defeats in that period, have little hope of a Uefa Cup place. One clean sheet in 21 games in one reason why Glenn Hoddle´s side are seemingly ending the season in mid table obscurity. But here they have the rather awkward opportunity of doing arch rivals Arsenal a favour.

The Londoners are in danger of tumbling to a fourth consecutive League defeat by Man U, but are pursuing a third win in four corresponding fixtures.

Last season´s game was one of the most exciting of the entire campaign. Spurs built a three goal half time lead, but lost 3-5.

A van Nistelrooy penalty separated the sides at Old Trafford, so Man U are aiming to make Spurs the sixth club they´ve ´doubled´ this season, having taken maximum points home and away off West Brom, Southampton, Birmingham, Liverpool and Newcastle. Tottenham have already failed to take anything from home and away encounters with Newcastle and Liverpool.

While last season´s third placing was the first time the Red Devils had finished outside the top two in the ten years of the Premier League, Tottenham´s ninth placing was their highest position since ending in a club Premiership best seventh in 1994/95.

A draw will take Manchester United´s all-time Premier League points tally to exactly 900 - easily the highest of any club. Arsenal have 766.

Tottenham´s last away game is at Middlesbrough next Saturday ( 3 May) and they end the season against Blackburn at White Hart Lane on 11 May.

Man U wrap up their home matches against Charlton next Saturday ( 3 May) and finish the season against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, 11 May.

Jeff Winter is now due to referee this match. He was in charge of Tottenham´s 2-3 win at Manchester City on 23 December, when he sent off Christian Ziege for two bookable offences.

" United gain advantage in title race"

The Premiership pendulum swung firmly in United´s favour on Saturday as Arsenal threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

It´s fantastic news for United as, with the teams both having played the same number of games, United are two points clear with just three matches remaining.

Sylvain Wiltord and Robert Pires had given the Gunners a commanding 2-0 lead with just thirty minutes left on the clock at the Reebok. But goals from Djorkaeff and an own goal from Martin Keown looks to have scuppered Arsenal´s championship chances, and puts United firmly in the driving seat.

However, United must go to White Hart Lane on Sunday and pick up three points against Spurs if they are to go FIVE points clear at the peak of the Premiership.

The title race certainly isn´t over yet though. United must stay focused to avoid slipping up in the final three matches if the Reds are to reclaim the Premiership crown from Highbury´s clutches.

Newcastle remain in third place after a 1-0 win over rivals Sunderland while Michael Owen scored four in a 6-0 Liverpool win over West Brom at the Hawthorns. Chelsea could only draw with Fulham, but stay ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Leeds are still dangerously close to the drop zone after a defeat at home to Blackburn. If West Ham beat Manchester City on Sunday, the Elland Road club will only be three points clear of the Hammers.

Premiership Results: Saturday 26 April
Bolton 2-2 Arsenal
Sunderland 0-1 Newcastle
Chelsea 1-1 Fulham
West Brom 0-6 Liverpool
Everton 2-1 Aston Villa
Birmingham 3-0 Middlesbrough
Leeds 2-3 Blackburn
Charlton 2-1 Southampton

Quotes of the Week: Twenty-one

27/4/03 10:00 AM

From criticisms to compliments, there´s always something being said about United. Every weekend, ManUtd.com goes hunting for soundbites, pearls of wisdom and the favourite footballer phrases...

" United have been playing with an extra man recently. His name´s Mo - Mo Mentum."
Mark Lawrenson. We´d usually take the mick out of him, but there´s not enough space for all the jokes here

" We had a two-goal advantage on aggregate for much of the game but I was always concerned until the last minute."
Madrid´s manager del Bosque was worried

" That´s not something for me to comment on. It is up to Sir Alex Ferguson. He obviously thought there were other players better placed on the night to do better."
del Bosque on Ole´s inclusion and Becks´ bench-warming

" It was unforgettable. I will never forget it. It only happened once before when I was with Inter Milan at Brescia´s stadium. That day I scored a very nice goal and the people cheered me."
Ronaldo on his standing ovation

" We wish Real Madrid every success and they now have a marvellous chance to win the cup. I wouldn´t like to choose any side above them because they carry a goal threat and they showed that tonight."
Fergie wants Madrid to win

" I didn´t expect to see McManaman. I had many possible formations in my mind but none of them included him. Maybe it was down to the fact that it was Manchester United and he has played here before many times. I can´t find any other reason."
Fergie baffled as to why McManaman featured in Real´s team!

" We had the best referee in Europe refereeing the best match in Europe this season. People will talk about it for a long time."
Fergie praises the bald-headed Pierluigi Collina

United target £40m Vieira
Manchester United will make a £40million bid for Patrick Vieira if they decide to sell England captain David Beckham. The news will stun title rivals Arsenal as they prepare to enter crucial contractual negotiations with their club captain in the summer. Vieira´s pledge to remain at Highbury for life has fallen on deaf ears at Old Trafford. United believe that Arsenal will have no alternative other than to accept the British record transfer offer for a player they believe will provide the extra class they need to get back on top in Europe. With a massive cash crisis engulfing Arsenal´s attempts to finance a new stadium at Ashburton Grove, the club´s board will find it hard to snub United. Vieira has only a year remaining on his current deal.
Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

When Real come calling you can´t refuse - Zidane
David Beckham´s Manchester United shirt will take pride of place among the famous collection that adorn Zinedine Zidane´s wall in his Spanish home. But Beckham will probably end up wearing the one Zidane handed him after Real Madrid secured their passage into the last four of the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Zidane neither confirms nor denies that he told Beckham to try it on for size when the two friends embraced at the end of that epic clash. The England captain stopped short of putting the shirt on for fear of antagonising the United fans who fear his departure to the reigning European champions is imminent. There are striking similarities between Beckham and Zidane. They had similar upbringings, have beautiful wives and growing families, captain their respective national sides and share the same German boot sponsors, Adidas. The pair became close after Zidane won his second World Footballer of the Year award in 2001, when the Frenchman said the judges had been extremely harsh in placing Beckham five places beneath him.
Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

Fergie: Why I´ll never lose my iron grip
Even at an age when he planned to retire to the golf course and the company of his grandchildren, Sir Alex Ferguson continues to prove that no decision is too tough when it comes to managing Manchester United. In a week which saw Glenn Roeder hospitalised by a stroke as he struggled to cope with the stresses of West Ham´s survival fight, Ferguson demonstrated that the iron grip he has held on Old Trafford for almost 17 years shows no sign of weakening. As David Beckham has discovered in the defining period of United´s season, no player - even one worth tens of millions in the merchandising market - is bigger than the club itself. From Norman Whiteside and Paul McGrath to Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Jaap Stam, Fergie has shown a penchant for confrontation whenever he feels a player is either taking liberties or falling short of the standards that come with the territory down Sir Matt Busby Way. And that´s why there was no compunction on Ferguson´s part when he left England´s captain stewing on the bench for the recent Premiership showdown with Arsenal and the midweek Champions League epic with Real Madrid.
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

Becks set to start at White Hart Lane
David Beckham is set to return to Manchester United´s starting line-up at Tottenham today. Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that there will be changes to the team that were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in midweek as United look to maintain their title challenge at White Hart Lane. The United manager will assess the physical state of his squad before deciding on his team. But Beckham, who scored twice as a substitute against Real, is in line for a recall on the right-hand side of United´s midfield at the expense of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Paul Scholes and Gary Neville are also in the frame to play after missing the epic European clash with Madrid through suspension. Ferguson said: " I will definitely be freshening the team up at Spurs. We´ve got Gary Neville and Paul Scholes to come back in, while Becks is also fresh."
Sports staff, Sunday Mirror

Not so sexy
If Arsenal do throw away the title - and this debacle at the Reebok makes that outcome increasingly likely - they have only themselves to blame. After opening up an eight-point gap at the top in March they are now two points adrift of Manchester United with only three games left. And it´s all down to their " I´m too sexy for my shirt" attitude. Yes, we all know the Gunners are, on paper, the most talented side in the country. But their cockiness looks like being their undoing.
Anthony Clavene, Sunday Mirror

Giggs: Heat´s on us to win the title
Ryan Giggs has spelt out the price of failure as Manchester UnitedÕs championship credentials go on the line at Spurs today. The Welsh winger has been at Old Trafford long enough to understand that Sir Alex Ferguson can be ruthless in deciding which players have a future at the club. Giggs himself has become a target for Inter Milan following reports that Ferguson was ready to listen to offers for a player who has served the Reds faithfully for the past 12 years. Even David Beckham seems to be indispensable now that Real Madrid look prepared to offer in excess of £30m for the England skipper. And while Giggs believes the close season should be a time for evolution rather than revolution at Old Trafford, he knows that the pressure on United to lift the championship has been cranked up even further by the midweek Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Real.
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

Let´s Scho for goals
Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for Paul Scholes to help bury Tottenham under an avalanche of goals at White Hart Lane - and leave title rivals Arsenal with a mountain to climb. Yesterday´s result at Bolton means Manchester United will definitely rip the championship back from Highbury if they beat Spurs, then claim maximum points against Charlton and Everton. It is less likely now that the Premiership will be decided on goal difference but boss Fergie still has just one message for his stars today: " Go for goals." And with Scholes eager to boost his tally of 13 league goals from midfield, he´s urging his hot-shot attackers to operate a ´shoot on sight´ policy.
Sports writer, The People

David set to be Beck
David Beckham is on the brink of a dramatic recall to the Manchester United team today. I understand the England captain played a ´full part´ in training yesterday. In United´s pattern-of-play work-outs, Beckham lined up on the right side of midfield. And that is a sure sign he is set for a comeback after missing recent key games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid. Sir Alex Ferguson has delayed naming his side until this morning when he will reveal the line-up at a team meeting.
Sports writer, The People

No return, Redknapp
Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp will be missing once again, despite making a successful return from a stress fracture in his foot. The England star played 65 minutes for the reserves against Arsenal last Wednesday after being kept on the sidelines for the past five months. But boss Glenn Hoddle is refusing to rush the former Liverpool midfielder back into first-team action, despite reports he would make an immediate return against Manchester United today.
Sports writer, The People

Lightning Bolt
Arsenal won the league in Manchester last season — but did they lose it yesterday just down the road in Bolton? Arsene Wenger´s champions incredibly — and inexplicably — threw away a match-winning two-goal lead. Wenger was dismayed. He moaned: " To concede two goals like that is difficult to accept." Especially after Sylvain Wiltord and Robert Pires had steered Arsenal into what appeared a commanding lead with a goal apiece within 10 minutes of the re-start.
