" Reds fare better under floodlights
4/3/03 12:50 AM
Reds fans lobbying for a reduction in United´s lunchtime kick-offs may find allies in the team following the publication of some new statistics.

Not only are early kick-off times inconvenient for fans travelling to games, the Opta stats suggest they also have a detrimental effect on United´s form.

Sir Alex Ferguson´s team have recorded only 8 wins in their 15 lunchtime fixtures this season, compared with an impressive 17 victories from 22 evening matches.

The floodlit nights at Old Trafford have long been favourable amongst United fans and with good reason it seems, as ManUtd.com now reveals. This season, Fergie’s side have been formidable at night, winning 77 % of their evening games. Of course, that stat bodes well for Wednesday´s game against Leeds which kicks off at 8pm.

By contrast, the Reds have dropped points in almost half of their lunchtime matches, including their last meeting with Leeds in September.

United leak more goals in their earlier starts as well. The lads must still be clearing the sleep from their eyes in the early kick-offs – they concede 1.2 goals per early start compared to that of 0.73 in the evening matches.

Season 2002/03 12pm-2pm 3pm-4pm 7pm-8pm Total
Played 15 12 22 49
Won 8 7 17 32
Drawn 2 4 2 8
Lost 5 1 3 9
Win % 53% 58% 77% 65%
Average goals scored per game 1.93 1.58 2.05 1.9
Average goals conceded 1.2 0.83 0.73 0.9
Stats correct at 04/03/03

Our analysis was prompted by Gary Neville´s quotes in the press which said “you don’t need any building up to play in front of 70,000 at Juventus. But noon against Bolton is different.”

While Gary was perhaps referring to the ability of the opposition, United do seem more confident when they´re kicking off at night. And they have performed slightly better this season in games that have started at the traditional time of 3pm on Saturdays than they have in the 12-2pm slot.

It´s a record that United will have to set straight very quickly, as their next three Saturday matches – against Aston Villa, Fulham and Liverpool – will all start at 12.30pm.

In the meantime, the Reds will take on Leeds under the floodlights and, no doubt, under the spotlight after Sunday´s disappointing defeat under the closed roof in Cardiff. "

en attendant le match vs bale, roy keane donne son avis sur ce qui manque a man utd cette saison....

"Roy wants magic 7/3/03 11:33 AM

Roy Keane has highlighted what he feels has been United´s problem recently - the team needs some magic.

The Reds´ influential skipper cites the flair of Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona as a missing ingredient in United´s attacking play.

"If you look at the midfield, there is not enough running forward - getting into the box and supporting the forwards," said Keane. "We lack someone who can produce the moment of magic.

"In the past we´ve had Mark Hughes, Eric Cantona, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs all capable of doing something - but nobody seems to be producing that now."

But players of Eric´s stature are rare, and as hard to find as they are to buy - the kind of influence Cantona had on United is priceless, and there is no certainty that the likes of Pavel Nedved, Ronaldinho or Patrick Kluivert, who have been touted as players who could fill that role, could produce the catalyst Roy speaks of.

There is no doubt that Ferguson is looking for a player to fill that role - Paul Scholes, and Ryan Giggs have both been tried and tested in that role. But with rumours of a summer spending spree rife in thenational press, perhaps Fergie may dip into the transfer market to find the elusive magic that Roy Keane talks about."

Report by Ben Hibbs.

"The French rejection
Fabien Barthez heads the list of high-profile casualties if Sir Alex Ferguson decides on a summer clear-out at Manchester United. The French goalkeeper is homesick and United’s coaching staff are worried by his ongoing hip injury and the fact that he is 31. Ferguson has inquired about Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini, with Sunderland’s Thomas Sorenson also touted as a possible successor to Barthez."

"Fergie´s friends up the stakes"
"Two millionaire pals of Sir Alex Ferguson were thought to be on the verge today of launching a full takeover bid for Manchester United. Irish racehorse owners JP McManus and John Magnier have become the largest shareholders in the world´s richest football club, with 10.37 per cent of its shares. Previously, the largest shareholder in the club was BskyB, with a 9.9 per cent stake. Should they mount a full takeover for United, the two - who upped their shareholding in the club from 8.65 per cent yesterday - could lever Sir Alex into a senior boardroom position with the Reds."

"Seba Euro KO
Juan Sebastian Veron strained medial knee ligaments in Wednesday´s 2-1 win over Leeds and is expected to miss the two remaining Champions League group matches, at home to Basle and away to Deportivo, and the Premiership clash at Aston Villa a week on Saturday. The Argentinian is expected to be back for the home game with Fulham on March 22, while skipper Roy Keane will need an extra week after damaging a hamstring. Meanwhile, Mark Viduka has warned Arsenal not to ease up in the Barclaycard Premiership title race or Manchester United will steal up and snatch their crown. The Leeds striker was on target at Old Trafford for the second successive season last night but still finished on the losing side as Mikael Silvestre´s late goal gave the home side a 2-1 win."

=>2 infos sur le successeur de keano et sur les jeunes de man utd qui marchent tres fort....

"Where is the next Roy Keane coming from?
Where is the next Roy Keane coming from? That thought will be occupying Sir Alex Ferguson´s mind already . . and certainly when he gets down to transfer business in the summer. Not that the original Keano is due to be put out to grass. Far from it. The Irishman will bring a lot to Manchester United´s table in the future, but there is going to be a vital piece of the old Roy that won´t be available to the Reds any more. After 18 appearances since recovering from his hip operation, we have seen enough to be able to be able to come to some conclusions. I think we have all had to reluctantly concede that the old Keane is a thing of the past."
David Sadler, Manchester Evening News

"Kids on course for Final date
United stayed on course for a possible derby showdown in the FA Youth Cup with a 3-1 win over Tranmere in the quarter-final at Moss Lane last night ( Thursday). Brian McClair´s side booked a two-legged semi-final against Charlton and the winner of that one will face either City or Middlesbrough in the final. It was two of the Reds´ brightest young stars who sent them on their way, right-sided midfielder Chris Eagles and the sumptuously-talented Mads Timm both scoring superb goals before substitute Sylvan Blake secured victory with a third late in the game."

"Fergie plans clear-out to make way for Davies
Tottenham winger Simon Davies will head a list of four Manchester United targets at the end of the season. Deals for David Bellion of Sunderland and Rennes defender Julien Escude are likely to go through, while Sir Alex Ferguson would also compete with Arsenal for Real Madrid full-back Roberto Carlos – if Ryan Giggs moves to Italy. Ferguson sends out young players Darren Fletcher, Kieran Richardson and Daniel Nardiello to face Basle in Wednesday’s dead Champions League rubber – and against Deportivo La Coruna six days later – hoping they can fill the void following his clear-out in the summer. The prospect of another trophyless season has convinced the Scot it is time to dismantle a squad that has let him down too many time – and captain Roy Keane admitted the players know where they stand. ‘If things don’t go according to plan then, come the end of the season, we have to face the music,’ he said. ‘That’s the way it should be and I’m not frightened of it. That is what being a Manchester United player is all about."
Chris Wheeler, Daily Mail
