Rooney pleads his innocence
England star Wayne Rooney has denied deliberately stamping on Ricardo Carvalho during The Three Lions´ defeat to Portugal on Saturday.
Rooney saw red mid-way through the second half of the quarter final defeat in Gelsenkirchen, with referee Horacio Marcelo Elizondo deeming him guilty of a deliberate stamp on the Portugal defender.
The Manchester United star´s dismissal cast a shadow over England´s penalty shoot-out defeat, with Fifa set to assess the incident later in the week.
Rooney has now broken his silence on the affair, claiming he was the victim of a foul prior to his red card.
"Obviously I´m bitterly disappointed to have been sent off in a World Cup finals match for England," said the 20-year-old striker. "I remember the incident clearly and have seen it several times since on TV.
"I am of the same opinion now as I was at the time that what happened didn´t warrant a red card.
"If anything, I feel we should have had a free kick for the fouls committed on me during the same incident."
Rooney and Carvalho were tussling for the ball in midfield when the Portuguese defender fell to the floor and was caught by Rooney´s boot.
Television replays have not proved conclusive, but Rooney is adamant he did not deliberately stamp on the Chelsea man.
"I want to say absolutely categorically that I did not intentionally put my foot down on Ricardo Carvalho," he added.
"He slid in from behind me and unfortunately ended up in a position where my foot was inevitably going to end up as I kept my balance. That´s all there was to it.
"If you ask any player - and indeed almost any fan - they will tell you that I am straight and honest in the way I play.
"From what I´ve seen in the World Cup, most players would have gone to ground at the slightest contact but my only thought then was to keep possession for England.
"When the referee produced the red card I was amazed - gobsmacked."
Rooney´s Manchester United team-mate has come in for severe criticism for his role in the dismissal, as he berated Elizondo prior to the red card.
It had been suggested that the pair were now at loggerheads, but Rooney has echoed Ronaldo´s comments from earlier in the day that there is no rift.
"I bear no ill feeling to Cristiano but am disappointed that he chose to get involved," added Rooney.
"I suppose I do though have to remember that on that particular occasion we were not team-mates."
Rooney concluded his statement by praising his team-mates for their heroic efforts in battling through to a shoot-out.
"I thought the England lads were awesome after I went off and the effort they put in was amazing," he added.
"Truly, if there was any justice England would now be preparing for a World Cup semi-final. Sadly, however, that is not to be in 2006.
"I want again to thank my team-mates for the unbelievable effort they put into the game and for all the support and encouragement they gave me after it."
Rossi signs new deal
Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with Giuseppe Rossi of a further 2 years to his current contract. This will see Giuseppe stay at the club until June 2010.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “We are delighted that he has signed a new contract, he represents the future of the club. Last year he had a remarkable season and he is developing all the time. Giuseppe is a fantastic talent and we see a great future ahead.”
Giuseppe Rossi said: “It is great to have extended my contract with the best team in the world. I just hope to keep progressing and developing my career.”
Reds Youngsters Rewarded
Six United youngsters have signed professional forms at Old Trafford.
Academy student Michael Barnes, first year scholar Febian Brandy and Kieran Lee, Ryan Shawcross, Sean Evans and Jamie Mullan have been rewarded for last term´s progress.
All six players featured sporadically for the all-conquering Reserves last term and should appear more heavily in the coming campaign.
Second year student Michael Lea has also had his scholarship extended by a further year, and will be a third year scholar next season.
Meanwhile, French striker David Bellion has completed his transfer to Nice.
UEFA Cup Winners To Open The New Old Trafford
Old Trafford will open as a 76,000 seater stadium by hosting the UEFA Cup holders Seville on Saturday 12 August, kick off 3pm.
The 8,000 seat extension of the stadium, which was partially opened ahead of schedule at the end of last season, will be fully opened for the start of the new season, confirming the famous old ground as the biggest in UK club football.
Announcing the game, Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It’s fitting that 50 years after the Club became the first in England to play European football, we are to welcome a current European cup holder to Old Trafford.
"It’s a good way to celebrate the club’s achievements in the past five decades – and a great way to open the fantastic new quadrants we have built.”
The match will be preceded with the burial of a time capsule which commemorates the Club’s achievements in the 50 years that have passed since the legendary Busby Babes won their first league championship in 1956.
Admission prices have been set to encourage children and families to enjoy a day out at Old Trafford, with all junior tickets costing £5 and a range of adult tickets from £10 to £25.
Discussions are underway to provide a variety of entertainment to make the day a special one. Tickets will be on sale from Tuesday 4 July via the usual channels.
All ticket holders for the Seville game will be entitled to a free ticket for the First Team’s open training session at Old Trafford on 11 August, which will be followed by the World final of the global tournament for under 15s – the Manchester United Premier Cup.
Those attending on the day will pay £3 for adults and £2 for juniors, with proceeds going to the Manchester United Foundation, which seeks to use the power of football and the name of Manchester United to benefit communities locally, across the UK and worldwide.

Sir Alex: We´ll be ready for new season
Sir Alex Ferguson wants his players to reach peak fitness ahead of the new season as the Reds prepare to travel to South Africa on a pre-season tour.
A squad of players not including those who took part in the World Cup will take on Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates between 15-22 July.
The likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all resumed training on Monday and will be among the big names on the pre-season tour of South Africa.
"We are taking a good nucleus of the experienced players over including Wes Brown, John O´Shea, Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, Kieran Richardson, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and some of our young players.
"In most cases [the players involved in the World Cup] have got a three week holiday. The ones who’ll be reporting on 24 July after the knock-out stages are Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Gabriel Heinze, Edwin Van Der Sar and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Ji-Sung Park will be reporting back on 18 July."
Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre, who could be involved in the final as France take on Italy, are scheduled to return on 31 July, while Cristiano Ronaldo, who exited the tournament at the semi final stage at the hands of France, should be back on 28 July.
Sir Alex also gave an update on the progress of Alan Smith, who is returning from a the broken leg and dislocated ankle he suffered against Liverpool at Anfield in February. Sir Alex says the Yorkshireman´s rehabilitation is going well.
"Alan is doing very well and we’re very pleased with the progress, but when he was injured in February we said he wouldn’t play for six or seven months so he won’t be back until the end of August, or early September."
