Manchester United are favourites to sign £2m-rated Derby midfielder Giles Barnes, who is also wanted by Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle. (Daily Mail)

CRISTIANO RONALDO will be ditched by Manchester United because of his World Cup shame.

Rooney is at war with the Portugal star and United fans will NEVER forgive him for getting their England hero sent off.

Ronaldo inflamed the situation by refusing to apologise — and admitting again he wants to quit United for Real Madrid.

He said: “I don’t feel sorry for Wayne Rooney. Why should I? This is a time for celebration.”

And when asked if he was betraying boss Alex Ferguson by saying he wants to join Real, he claimed: “I never said I wanted to go to Real Madrid.

“All I said was I liked Real Madrid. I don’t know what my future is.”

Yet he then told a journalist in Portuguese he WAS, in fact, about to sign with Real.

---------

Ronaldo: No Rooney apology

Manchester United´s Cristiano Ronaldo insists he has nothing to apologise to team-mate Wayne Rooney about.

Ronaldo was first on the scene after Rooney´s clash with Ricardo Carvalho during England´s World Cup quarter final defeat to Portugal on Saturday.

The United winger appeared to ask referee Horacio Elizondo to take action against Rooney and indeed he did as he sent the English striker off.

Reports have suggested that Rooney was incandescent with rage after England bowed out and that he tried to confront Ronaldo - who scored the winner in the penalty shoot-out.

Ronaldo, who over the weekend confirmed he had held talks with one of Real Madrid´s presidential candidates, says he will be speaking to Rooney - but not to apologise.

"People are saying the referee gave a red card because I spoke with him and asked him to show a red card - but that is not true," he said in the Daily Express.

"It was not my fault. I spoke with Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville and they did not have a problem with me.

"I did not get the chance to speak to Wayne, I will phone him.

"But why would I feel sorry for him? I don´t feel sorry for Wayne.

"This is a time to congratulate Portugal and celebrate our victory. We will enjoy this party."

Ronaldo´s Portuguese colleague Ricardo insists Rooney only has himself to blame.

"There is always the idea if finding a scapegoat but I don´t think the referee sent of Rooney because Ronaldo forced him to do it," he said.

"The referee had an eye out for violent conduct."

World Cup bust-up sparks Reds crisis
Stuart Mathieson

CONTROVERSIAL: Cristiano Ronaldo
SIR Alex Ferguson is facing a major crisis with wantaway star Cristiano Ronaldo accused of getting Wayne Rooney a World Cup red card.

The legacy of the Gelsenkirchen gamesmanship from United´s Portuguese winger that led to Rooney being sent off for violent conduct has left Fergie with a volatile situation that could blow apart his plans to rebuild the Reds.

Ferguson has consistently trumpeted the unique talents of 21-year-old Ronaldo and the world-class ability of England´s 20-year-old hitman, regarding them as the cornerstone of United´s future.
Advertisement your story continues below

But that precocious axis is now at breaking point and has landed the Reds manager with a nightmare scenario.

Ronaldo was caught on camera feigning a head-butt before the quarter-final clash and Rooney claimed his team-mate had whispered to him: "I am going to get you sent off."

Following Rooney´s 62nd-minute dismissal, Ronaldo winked at the Portuguese bench in a gesture being interpreted as ´job done´.

Rooney, angry and upset, is reported to have told England colleagues in the dressing room: "I can never play with him again. I am going to sort him out."

Ronaldo has insisted, however, that despite charging up to referee Horacio Elizondo following Rooney´s tangle with Ricardo Carvalho, he wasn´t trying to get his United team-mate sent off.

Bust-up

"People will say that the referee gave the red card because I spoke with him; this is not true. I spoke with the referee to say it was a foul, but I only said it was a foul, not a red card," Ronaldo said.

"I think the English press will say Rooney was sent off because of me but it is not true."

Fergie nailed his colours to Ronaldo´s mast at the end of the season when he sided with his winger over a training ground bust-up with Ruud van Nistelrooy, making it clear the Dutchman´s days at Old Trafford were numbered.

Ronaldo then stunned United by saying a move to Real Madrid would be his dream.

Madrid´s presidential elections took place last night and United and Ferguson were eagerly awaiting the outcome.

If Juan Miguel Villar Mir is successful in his bid to win power at the Bernabeu then he will make good his election promise to bid for Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, who has an Old Trafford contract until 2010, was quoted in Spanish newspaper, Marca, last week as saying: "I´ve told my agent I am prepared to leave. I dream of playing for Madrid."

And after scoring the winning penalty which knocked England out, he again reiterated his desire to leave, saying of the reports: "Yes they are true."

Ronaldo’s willingness to turn his back on United has left Ferguson fuming, and Saturday’s bust-up has seen the odds on Ronaldo’s departure drop dramatically.

Ronaldo’s stock may have risen during the World Cup but it had already been on the decline with %United fans because his fancy tricks frustratingly lacked a consistent end product.

If it was a straight fight between Rooney and Ronaldo, the United support would be firmly in the scouser’s corner.

England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard saw Ronaldo rush up to the Argentine official and say: “Did you see that?”

Gerrard said: “If it was one of my team-mates who had done that I’d be absolutely disgusted.”

Fifa wait on Rooney statement

Fifa have confirmed that Wayne Rooney has until Thursday to file a statement with regards his sending off against Portugal.

The Manchester United striker made the headlines on Saturday after he saw red for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho just past the hour mark.

England eventually crashed out of the World Cup on penalties following a 0-0 stalemate after 120 minutes of football, but it is Rooney´s involvement in proceedings that Fifa are interested in.

´´Wayne Rooney got a direct red card so he will automatically be suspended," said a Fifa spokesman.

"It will be a disciplinary case. The committee will decide on the penalty."

Football´s governing body are keen to hear Rooney´s version of events, eager to investigate not only his stamp but also a push on Manchester United team-mate, and Portugal wide man, Cristiano Ronaldo.

While the English press have been quick to condemn Ronaldo´s role in the incident as he urged the referee to show Rooney a red card, later winking at the Portugal bench, Fifa have confirmed that the Portugal international has no case to answer.

Rooney has yet to comment but will now send Fifa an account of what passed at the weekend in the next few days.

Ronaldo clears the air

Cristiano Ronaldo insists there is no bad feeling between himself and Wayne Rooney.

Rooney was upset with Ronaldo after being sent off during England´s World Cup quarter final defeat to Portugal on Saturday.

Rooney showed his anger with Ronaldo by pushing him after the winger approached the referee following Rooney´s foul on Ricardo Carvalho.

It was claimed that both players were at loggerheads as a result of the incident and that Ronaldo could even be forced out of Manchester United.

Ronaldo has refuted the rumours and revealed he has cleared the air with his Old Trafford team-mate.

"The things that have been said regarding me and my team-mate and friend Rooney are incredible," said Ronaldo told www.gestifute.com.

"Between me and Rooney, there is absolutely no problem.

"I reiterate, no problem.

"At the end of the game, we sent each other some text messages and also today. Between the two of us everything has been cleared.

"He wished me the best of luck in the World Cup. He told me we had a great team and that if we continued to play like this, we would go far.

"He wasn´t angry with me and moreover, he told me to completely ignore what the English press has said, that all they wanted was to create confusion but we are already used to that."

Ronaldo again pleaded his innocence that he was not to blame for Rooney´s sending off.

"I am not a referee and I don´t have the power to send off a player," added Ronaldo.

"I had nothing to do with the fact that the referee showed the red card."

The flying winger also rubbished talk that he will leave United for Real Madrid this summer.

Real Madrid presidential candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir claimed Ronaldo was keen on joining the Spanish giants if he won control at El Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo has denied the reports and confirmed he is happy to return to United.

"There have been comments published in which I reportedly said that I didn´t want to go back to Manchester United," noted Ronaldo.

"That is completely false, of course I want to go back.

"It´s just typical of the English press but I don´t lose any sleep."

Ronaldo also revealed that he asked Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari if he could take the final penalty in the shoot-out against England.

The 21-year-old kept his cool from the spot to book Portugal´s place in the semi-finals and he was always confident he could decide the outcome of the game.

"When the decision was going to be taken on who will take the penalties, I asked Scolari if I could take the last one," Ronaldo said.

"I like to take penalties and to score them.

"Why did I ask to be last? Because I like to take responsibility and because I had a strong feeling that I was going to be the one to resolve the game."
