Giggs, le diable du jeu

22/04/2003
Sports.fr

Ryan Giggs – David Beckham.

GIGGSY GIGGSY GIGGSY GIGGSY ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our finest hour
Roy Keane believes Manchester United are on the verge of their greatest ever comeback. United trail Real Madrid 3-1 after the first leg of their European Cup quarter-final. A 2-0 victory at Old Trafford in the second leg tonight will see them into the semis. And captain Keane said: " If ever a team was ready for the biggest challenge they are ever going to face, it is this team...and now. It is a massive challenge but the spirit in the camp and our form is excellent, as good as I have known in 10 years at the club. The lads are ready and eager for the game to start."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Madrid blast novice Alex
Real Madrid have described Alex Ferguson as a ´novice´ for his comments over the rumoured David Beckham transfer to the Bernabeu. Fergie suggested before the first leg between Real and Manchester United that the Spanish giants had put the story out to unsettle Beckham. He thought it was one of a number of dirty tricks they were going to try during the tie. But last night Real coach Vicente Del Bosque hit back. He said: " These rumours are always around at this stage of the season. So, if he believes they have come from Real Madrid, he has made a novice-like error. We prefer to concentrate just on football."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Can you stop them?
The lights were focused firmly on the man in the hot seat as he took a sip of water. His name was Alex Ferguson of Manchester and he was facing the 64,000 dollar question. Could United stop Real Madrid scoring in the battle of football´s ultimate millionaires? No amount of coughing was going to produce the solution for the United boss. Tonight, his players will provide the answer. If it is yes, United will move ever closer to a European jackpot. The forwards still have to do their bit to reverse the 3-1 deficit from the quarter-final first-leg in the Bernabeu. But Fergie knows keeping a clean sheet is absolutely vital to United´s chances of becoming only the second team in the history of the Champions League knockout stage to recover from two goals down after the first leg. Only once in Champions League history has a team recovered from a two-goal deficit to go through. That was in April 2000 when Barcelona came back from a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea to win 5-1 in the quarter-final replay after extra time.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

No place like home
Ryan Giggs believes the atmosphere at Old Trafford will lift United to a famous victory over Real Madrid. Giggs said: " Home advantage is hugely significant - and Real made the most of theirs a fortinght ago. We will be a different proposition on our own patch and we can raise our game. Real were superb in Spain but they are not superhuman - we can get at them."
Sports staff, The Sun

Get stuck in, Reds
Barcelona star Frank de Boer has told Manchester United: Get physical with Real Madrid." The Dutch ace was part of the Barcelona team that held Real 1-1 last Saturday. And he said: " The tactics we played against Madrid should be copied by United. We were much more aggressive and the wingers played very tight on the line. Only if United get at them physically and aggressively can their own quality show through."
Sports staff, The Sun

Sir Alex plans a Real late show
Sir Alex Ferguson is plotting a repeat of the greatest late show in football history to signal Manchester United´s path to glory. United need to become only the second team since the Champions League was formed 11 seasons ago to overhaul a two-goal first-leg deficit and get past the pass masters of Real Madrid. But Fergie summoned up memories of the remarkable injury-time climax in Barcelona in 1999 that saw his side come back from the dead to beat Bayern Munich and complete the Treble as a motivation for his men to eliminate the holders. Strikes from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that broke Munich´s heart on that famous night were the ultimate proof that United never know when they are beaten, even when they were without the suspended Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. Scholes and Gary Neville are missing tonight and, after Ruud van Nistelrooy´s goal in the Bernabeu gave United a quarter-final lifeline, Ferguson believes his side can emulate Barcelona against Chelsea three years ago and reach the next phase.

I have a dream
David Beckham has achieved much in his illustrious career but there is one special dream he is desperate to realise this season - raising the European Cup at Old Trafford. The Champions League final will be staged at Manchester United´s ground on May 28 and Beckham can think of no more fitting venue for them to be crowned kings of Europe once again. " Other than lifting the World Cup, I would have to say lifting the European Cup at Old Trafford would be my ultimate dream," said Beckham. " We´ve lifted the Premiership trophy in front of our fans at Old Trafford a number of times now and they are all memorable. But to win the European Cup in Manchester would be something special. Celebrating winning the biggest club competition in your home-town would really be an unforgettable experience." To have any chance of turning that dream into reality, Beckham and his team-mates must tonight achieve what manager Sir Alex Ferguson has described as " their biggest challenge yet".
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Keane is putting his shirt on United
Perhaps the idea appealed to the footballing romantic in Roy Keane. Or perhaps it was like he said and he didn´t have anything else to wear. Whatever the reason, when the Manchester United skipper appeared yesterday in a T-shirt with the word " Italia" emblazoned on it, it sent out a powerful message. Minds raced back to the night in Turin´s Stadio Delle Alpi four years ago when Keane single-handedly dragged his team back into the European Cup. If they do the same tonight it will be a comeback to put even that Italian job in the shade.
Oliver Holt, Daily Mirror

Rio must show his real worth
Rio Ferdinand could cost Manchester United more than the £30 million they paid for him if they crash out of the Champions League tonight. The England star is under more pressure than ever to perform in his club´s vital quarter-final against Madrid. No one player can be responsible for success or failure at a club the size of United. But Ferdinand knows better than anyone that it was for this type of game that the club paid so much money to Leeds for his services at the start of the season.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Vicente´s words are as sharp as his team
Real Madrid selected their psychological weapon carefully upon arrival in Manchester last night. True to their royal heritage, they chose the deft thrust of the rapier to counter the thumping broadsword of Sir Alex Ferguson. Inevitably it was David Beckham around whom the skirmish took place, with Madric coach del Bosque putting down Ferguson with just enough weary grandeur to suggest he values kidology as highly as they do at Old Trafford.
John Dillon, Daily Express

Figo almost joined City
Luis Figo is on course to wreck Manchester United´s Champions League dream at Old Trafford tonight - 11 years after almost signing for bitter rivals Manchester City. Former Maine Road boss Peter Reid has revealed he almost landed the Real Madrid playmaker, the second most expensive footballer of all time, as a teenager during his stint as City boss.
Sports staff, Daily Express

Fergie jibes hide his Real concern
Sir Alex Ferguson does a nice line in public insults, as Real Madrid have duly noted after being branded a team of performing seals more akin to the Harlem Globetrotters. Not even the imperious Zidane has been spared a Ferguson barb. According to the United manager the finest player in the world is someone who does " fancy tricks without hurting you". In private, though, Ferguson´s view of the side United meet at Old Trafford this evening in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final appears to give them more credit. During yesterday´s press conference, Ferguson turned to Roy Keane and began what turned into a fascinating aside to the main event. Using the voice of the Spanish interpreter as cover, the United boss and his captain briefly exchanged ideas on how Real would play in the absence of Raul.
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

Becks is still the target
Real Madrid will try again to sign David Beckham in the summer, despite Manchester United´s public declaration that the England captain is not for sale. A senior source at Real has told Sportsmail that they will simply " invite" Beckham to sign. If they receive a positive response - and Real do not believe that anyone would turn them down - they will open negotiations with United, but will not be held to ransom.
