United wait on Keane response
Manchester United chief executive David Gill says the Premiership side are still awaiting a response from Roy Keane regarding a testimonial for the now Celtic star.
Keane ended a 12-year stint at Old Trafford in November as he departed the club under a cloud after criticising his team-mates, however he has been pencilled in for the chance to say a proper goodbye to the fans who still idolise the combative star.
Whilst United have agreed to the return of the 34-year-old, with Keane believed to be keen to take up the offer, Gill admits they are still to receive confirmation from the midfielder.
"Yes and no," said Gill when questioned on whether any progress had been made.
"They have asked us for a particular date and we´ve said yes, but we´ve not heard anything subsequently.
"They asked if we could do it and we said yes, but we´re just there to give them the ground really, and help market it.
"But you have to put a committee together, maybe he has a committee in place, I don´t know.
"We would be delighted to do it obviously, and I´m sure the fans would want it, but that´s Roy´s decision.
"We have quite rightly offered him a testimonial, it´s up to him whether he wants to take it up."
Keane´s acrimonious split with Sir Alex Ferguson left United with a hole to fill in the centre of midfield, and Gill says the club are ready to spend in the summer to compensate for their former captain´s exit.
Lyon´s Mahamadou Diarra and Lille´s Jean Makoun are both reputed targets for Ferguson, and Gill anticipates arrivals as United bid to build on a mixed season.
"I think everyone knows that it´s a bit of a year of transition to some degree," Gill added.
"We´ve had some issues with the midfield, but we´ve got plans to strengthen that this summer.
"In the meantime we have to try and finish as high as we can in the league."
