Fit-again Solskjaer asks for time

Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to play down expectations after his long-awaited return to action.

Solskjaer´s seven-minute substitute appearance at Birmingham ended a 19-month exile from first-team action.

The 32-year-old Norwegian received a warm welcome from United fans but said: "It´s going to take time to get my proper fitness back.

"I´m back in the squad now and available if the manager needs me."

Solskjaer has undergone two bouts of knee surgery since his last first-team appearance in the 2004 FA Cup final against Millwall.

The Norwegian warned it will take time for him to reach the level that made him one of the Premiership´s most feared penalty-box predators.

He said: "The fans have been fantastic, it is surreal and in a way maybe a bit unrealistic.

"They have seen me come back now but hopefully they will see a few better performances from me.

"It was a great feeling just to get back on the pitch again and to be able to wave to the supporters at the end."

World Cup hope fading says Heinze

Manchester United´s Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze believes he has little chance of playing in the World Cup.

Heinze suffered a cruciate ligament injury in September and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already cast doubt on whether he will be fit for the event.

"I don´t see myself in the World Cup, but not because of Ferguson´s words," Heinze said." I don´t see myself there because I´m not playing at the moment.

"If I don´t play for my club, I wouldn´t play for my country."

Heinze is back in his home town of Rosario, and is hoping to step up his recovery in the new year.

"I don´t have a fixed timetable," he said. "I´m making an enormous sacrifice and in January I´ll start working on the ground.

Le défenseur international de Monaco (L1 de football), Patrice Evra, qui ne s´est pas entraîné avec son club depuis la reprise, le mercredi 28 décembre, souhaite quitter l´AS Monaco, a-t-on appris jeudi, de sources proches du dossier.

Patrice Evra, 24 ans, ne s´est présenté ni mercredi, ni jeudi à l´entraînement de l´AS Monaco. Vendredi matin, il s´est contenté d´un bref passage d´environ une demi-heure au centre d´entraînement de La Turbie sans s´entraîner. Il ne s´est ensuite pas présenté lors de la séance de l´après-midi.

Joint par téléphone, son agent italien Frédérico Pastorello, a confirmé qu´il y avait "un problème à régler" et que le joueur était "sollicité par différents clubs".

Fergie hits back at Pat

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at Patrick Vieira´s vicious criticisms of Ruud van Nistelrooy, turning accusations of cowardice and cheating back onto the former Arsenal star.

Vieira, now plying his trade in Italy with Juventus, launched a stringent attack on the Dutch striker in his autobiography earlier this year, following a series of clashes involving the two players during famously fierce games between the great rivals.

Vieira attacked the United man as he stated: "Ruud van Nistelrooy is a cheat and a coward who is sneaky in the way he goes about fouling other players. Everyone thinks he is a nice guy but, in fact, he´s a son of a bitch."

However, Ferguson has now questioned Vieira´s own record, alluding to a famous incident in 1999 when Vieira received a six-match ban for spitting at West Ham´s Neil Ruddock.

"It depends what you call cowardice and cheating," said Ferguson.

"Some people think spitting in other people´s faces is not a brave thing to do.

"We all have different ways of looking at these things."

Ferguson´s comments come just three days before he takes his Red Devils to Highbury for the final time, as perhaps The Premiership´s most intense rivalry rears its head for the first time this season.

Previous encounters have seen numerous red cards, threats of police involvement in the manager´s war of words and an infamous food fight, but Ferguson believes that despite the drama and hint of menace surrounding the encounters, Liverpool is still the game United fans look to.

"I still think Manchester United and Liverpool matches are the best in the sense of the history of both clubs, which is greater than Arsenal´s," Ferguson added.

"There is an historic rivalry between the fans as well. This all makes United v Liverpool games stand out for me and I think the players will agree with that."

However, Ferguson did concede that the ferocity of the meetings with Arsenal were unrivaled, as the enmity between the sides has grown ever since Nigel Winterburn famously goaded Brian McClair for missing a penalty in 1988, and the disgraceful 21 man brawl in 1990.

"The difference is United and Liverpool games have traditionally been well behaved. The players get on well and compete.

"There are always flashpoints in Arsenal games that make them unsavoury at times.

"There has been intense rivalry since George Graham´s time in 1991-92. It has not abated."
