" Post match analysis of the match against Arsenal"

The championship race remains wide open after Ryan Giggs headed United´s equaliser barely a minute after Arsenal had grabbed a second-half lead.

The result leaves United three points clear of the champions, who have a game in hand.

But Arsenal will be hampered on the run-in by the loss of injured skipper Patrick Vieira - and suspended centre-back Sol Campbell, who was sent off for an 82nd minute elbow on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be disappointed not to have left with three points after his side dominated most of the game. United, always prepared to scrap, took charge for all but a brief session after half time.

The difference between the sides was clear. Arsenal want to play beautiful football while United want to win.

Vieira, who limped off towards the end of the first half, is the only Gunners star who relishes a battle. United have repeatedly shown they can win while playing below their best.

Ruud van Nistelrooy´s 23rd minute opener was typical of the chasm. He fought his way clear on the left, held off Martin Keown and dinked a shot over stand-in keeper Stuart Taylor. It was the sort of goal Arsenal, who specialise in cameos, rarely score.

Yet their 50th minute leveller was bizarre. Ashley Cole shot with his ´wrong´ right foot. The ball hit Thierry Henry on the back of the legs and deceived Fabien Barthez.

Worse followed for United 12 minutes later. Henry looked a yard offside as he ran on to slot Gilberto Silva´s throughball past Barthez, but the goal was allowed to stand.

Typically, Arsenal admired their lead instead of protecting it. How they miss the leadership and organisation that Tony Adams gave them for so long. Within 60 seconds, Giggs finished off Solskjaer´s far post cross to set up a thrilling finale.

The game turned sour for Arsenal when referee Mark Halsey, alerted by an assistant, showed a red card to Campbell with seven minutes left. They may have gained a point on the night, but now they are playing catch-up in the title race.

" UNITED TARGET STARTS LEGAL ACTION TO LEAVE LAZIO "

Story by Editor 17 April 2003

And the big Dutch man may be right behind him

The Daily Express has reported that Lazio have fallen behind
on Claudio Lopez’s wages and that he has begun legal moves
to leave. This would apparently mean that he could leave
Lazio without them being able to charge a fee.

Meanwhile Japp Stam is ready to move on as well:

“Lazio have told the players we must sign the new contracts
offers by the end of the week or we will placed on the
transfer list. The new offer is totally unacceptable and
unless something changes, I will definitely not be signing
it. If that means I am not a Lazio player next season, so be
it.

" The club´s offer is to pay the remaining four months of the
players´ salaries for this season in shares in the club.
Secondly, they want all the squad to agree to a 45% cut in
their contract terms for next season. This offer is
laughable.”

He is according to Soccernet

Quite how these quotes from Fergie add up to Veron being fit
for the second leg of the quarter finals is anyone´s guess but
let’s hope that they’re right.

Speaking of Veron’s treatment in Rome Fergie said:

“Seba has got this guru out there who he believes in. He has
had him at Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio and we get that quite
a bit.

“The French players also have someone they turn to. They
have a faith in these sort of people”

BROADSHEET VIEW

Story by Editor 17 April 2003

The usual suspects

Guardian:

The result leaves Arsenal and Manchester United still
grappling tenaciously with one another at the head of the
table, but it may be the champions´ grip on the title that
is loosening. The visitors, dominant in the first half, were
perceptibly superior and Arsène Wenger´s team must be
conscious now of the obstacles in their path as, with a game
in hand, they hurry to catch the Old Trafford club.

With seven minutes remaining, Sol Campbell flung out an
elbow as he sought to drive away from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
and smacked the Norwegian in the face. If the deed was not
malicious, it was certainly imprudent. The Arsenal centre-
half received his second red card of the season and unless
the decision is overturned a four-game ban will keep him out
of the FA Cup final.

Sir Alex Ferguson can savour the worries that beset Arsenal,
but will not look back on this evening with contentment. A
linesman´s mistake permitted Wenger´s team to take a 2-1
lead when Thierry Henry, from an off-side position, snatched
his second goal of the evening and the result also wronged
United. They were superior for long enough to have merited
victory.

Ferguson was so enamoured of the St James´ Park show that he
picked the same line-up here. David Beckham was therefore on
the bench as an unused substitute. The attacking pattern
laid down in the north-east had been too effective to be
broken up at Highbury.

With 51 minutes gone, there was a neat exchange of roles as
Robert Pires dropped deeper and put Ashley Cole in for a
swerving run that carried him across Wes Brown. Even so, his
shot would have been unlikely to beat Barthez had it not
deflected off Henry.

The tonic effect may have been all the greater for Arsenal´s
recognition of their good fortune. There was an air of
purpose even if Henry should have been ruled off-side from
Gilberto Silva´s pass in the 62nd minute but, allowed to
race free, he slipped the ball home.

United´s spirit is, however, rarely broken and Arsenal have
a habit of relaxing prematurely. A minute later, Solskjaer
crossed deep and Giggs headed home from close range. Near
the close, Barthez blocked a Henry effort with his feet, but
a win for Arsenal would have been travesty more than
triumph. A match that was supposed to decide the title had
trouble separating these sides.

Telegraph:

All shared points are equal but some are more equal than
others. A smiling Sir Alex Ferguson will have loved this
draw gained at the home of his biggest rivals. Not only does
it keep Manchester United three points clear of Arsenal but
the champions finished with some notable absentees.

With eight minutes remaining, Sol Campbell was deservedly
dismissed for flicking an elbow into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer´s
face right in front of the linesman, Nigel Miller, who duly
informed the outstanding referee, Mark Halsey.

Here was English football at its intoxicating best, full of
nip and tuck, end-to-end moves, wonderful waves flowing
between a transfixed Clock End and North Bank. It
encapsulated all the rivalry between the Premiership´s
finest sides, well-matched thoroughbreds contesting a
compelling race.

Until Arsenal´s second-half revival, Ferguson could not have
been more pleased. His plan to steer the ball quickly
towards the lone front-runner, Van Nistelrooy, brought rich
reward midway through the half. Arsenal should have cleared.
But his 37th goal of the season was never in doubt. The ball
seemingly mesmerised by Van Nistelrooy, the forward guided
it into position before lifting it unerringly over the
diving Taylor.

First blood to United. Wenger´s men refused to lie down.
Five minutes after the restart, Arsenal´s heightened tempo
helped them level. Pires, so often the catalyst, cut in from
the left and played the ball into the box. It clipped Dennis
Bergkamp on the way through and fell to Cole. Alarms bells
rang in United´s backyard.

Then controversy. With Henry a yard offside, the Frenchman
received a wonderful pass from Gilberto Silva. As United
appealed vainly, Henry turned, raced through the gears and
slipped the ball past the diving Barthez: one-nil down, 2-1
up. No wonder Arsenal fans were singing. Extraordinary.

So was United´s response. Within a minute, they were level,
drawing on their deep well of determination, working the
ball wide and then in, devastatingly so. Solskjaer whipped
in a cross that David Beckham would have admired and there
was the unmarked Giggs to head home from five yards.
Brilliant.

Indie:

The destiny of the title, like the construction of Arsenal´s
new stadium, will have to wait. Having fought themselves to
a thrilling stalemate, the two leviathans of the English
game remain entwined at the head of the Premiership.
However, the rare sight of Sir Alex Ferguson on the pitch
after the match, waving to the travelling support and
punching the air, made it clear Manchester United believe
they are ascendant.

United achieved their point without David Beckham. In
leaving him and Gary Neville on the bench Ferguson had made
a statement aimed at his dressing room but audible in
Madrid. Confirming his abiding principle that no one is
bigger than the team, he put his faith in the XI that had
pillaged St James´ Park on Saturday.

For the first 50 minutes United´s performance suggested
Ferguson had got it right. Composed and fluid, they caught
Arsenal by surprise, their hosts expecting the more physical
approach United had adopted on the last three meetings.

Times:

Honours even, but no prizes for guessing who was the happier
manager after last night’s tumultuous 2-2 draw between
Arsenal and Manchester United. While Sir Alex Ferguson
strode purposefully towards the travelling supporters,
Arsène Wenger stalked off down the Highbury tunnel in a
fury. His blood was still boiling an hour later as he
contemplated the two blows that have swung the Barclaycard
Premiership championship race United’s way.

If Wenger had to nominate two players he would not want to
be without over the remaining weeks of the season, the
Arsenal manager would choose Patrick Vieira and Sol
Campbell, but both could be lost to him for significant
parts of the campaign. Vieira’s knee injury will need rest,
but it was Campbell’s impending suspension after his red
card last night that was driving Wenger to animated rage.
Wenger admitted that he was talking without the benefit of
looking at video replays and, when he does take the time to
sit down, he may have a better understanding of why Nigel
Miller, the assistant referee, flagged that Campbell had
struck Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with an elbow.

Mark Halsey, the referee, indicated last night that he would
be willing to look at the incident again, but the fact that
there was contact makes it a marginal decision. Officials
like to change their mind only when it is a clear mistake.

Fergie, Wenger and the rest

Sir Alex thought we were unlucky not to win:

“From a neutral´s point of view, it was absorbing. From a
manager´s point of view, I need a good night´s sleep now!

" I´m proud of my players. In the first-half, in particular,
they were fantastic. I´m surprised that we didn´t settle the
issue as we were the better team.

" The first Arsenal goal was a deflection. It´s a big boost
to get a lucky goal like that.

" The second, which I´ve just seen again on television, was
two yards offside. It´s hard to recover from that but they
showed their character and got back to deserve a point."

Fergie was unhappy with Sol’s flailing elbow:

“It´s happening far too often - I can see someone getting a
serious injury soon. I haven´t seen this incident again, in
fairness to Sol Campbell, but people seem to have forgotten
what happened to Gary Mabbutt a few years ago. I think
that´s coming back into the game."

Looking at the title race he said:

“I think it´s going to go to the wire. You´ve seen two great
teams tonight and our boys have got the momentum now - I´m
just sorry we didn´t weather their storm.

“Arsenal have scored more than us - we have to do something
about it. We´ve got four games left and they are all tough.
Arsenal have five left and two or three of them are tough -
the pot is still boiling very strongly.”

Giggs:

“The team who won would have been in pole position, but it
was a draw. And there are plenty of games left yet and I am
sure points will be dropped. Blackburn on Saturday will be a
difficult game for us, Arsenal have a difficult game at
Middlesbrough, so there are a lot of points to be won and
lost, so we will concentrate on what we have to do now.

“It was a difficult game for both sides with a lot riding on
it. We knew we were going to be under pressure because they
are a good team and it was nice to get back into the game.”

Talking about the offside claim on the second goal Giggs
said:

“You just have to get on with it. It probably evens itself
out. We were just happy to get back into the game because
not many teams do [against Arsenal].”

He was also happy with his own goal:

“It was a great cross from Ole. I just headed it down. It
was nice to see it go in. I have just got to carry on
getting in the positions - I have missed a few - and just
keep putting them away. It was a crucial goal in the
circumstances.”

Sol Campbell is a bit upset about the sending off:

“I admit that I touched him, but it wasn´t deliberate. It´s
not as though I swung my elbow at him. It´s tough. My whole
season could hinge on this and I´ve worked so hard to get
this far.”

Amazingly, Arsene Wenger actually saw something for once,
although he wasn’t too happy with it:

“Sol is destroyed because he cannot understand it. Everyone
who knows Sol knows he didn´t touch him ( Solskjaer) on
purpose. I can show you some stray elbows, but this one was
definitely an accidental one.

“What is his interest in doing Solskjaer with an elbow? He
had the ball and just wanted to gain an extra yard to give
the ball by pushing his arm out, which 99 per cent of
players do. I can show you some straight elbows against us,
which were really dangerous, but this was definitely an
accidental one. I´m very disappointed.

" In training, I´ve seen him in extreme situations. He
doesn´t hit or kick anyone. It´s a complete joke. Frankly, I
still can´t believe it. I would love us to play Manchester
United again and a linesman to do that to Manchester United
as I´ve never seen it."

Looking at the upcoming title race he said:

“It´s open for everybody to take. At half time I thought if
we lost it would be over but now I think we have a very good
chance. You can´t say anyone is in the driving seat - we go
from game to game now because it changes so quickly.”

And on the game itself:

“I´m pleased with the response from the boys after half
time. But I´m disappointed because I feel we lost our
concentration for one minute - if we had kept it at 2-1 we
would have won this game easily because we were putting them
under pressure. We played well for stages - but I must say 2-
2 looks a fair result.”

Thierry Henry knows he was lucky to get one goal, let alone
two:

“I don´t know [about offside]. I received ball, but did not
have clue. The first one was the luckiest I have scored!

“It is not easy to come back and even more so against
Manchester United. They play on the counter attack, but we
showed we had great character. Maybe we did not show enough
concentration to stay 2-1 up. We did not play well enough in
the first half. In the first half, we were lacking a bit of
power, but in the second half we put them under pressure and
scored two goals, one of them lucky. It has to go on now
until the end. All the games are cup finals now - starting
from today.”

" Henry admits lucky strike "

Thierry Henry has admitted lady luck was shining on him for his brace at Highbury in the 2-2 draw with United on Wednesday night.

Arsenal´s French forward claimed his first goal after a deflection off a shot from Ashley Cole. Cole´s strike went through Wes Brown´s legs, ricocheted off Henry and sneaked between Barthez´s legs.

Henry´s second goal was clearly offside, but the linesman failed to spot it and the Gunners front man wasn´t going to throw away the opportunity to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead.

Giggs managed to pull a goal back for United to bring the scores level, but Henry admitted to no small amount of luck for his brace as both teams claimed a point to leave the title race going right to the wire.

Henry said: " My first goal was one of the luckiest I´ve scored. I don´t know if the second was offside.

" I had my back to goal so I just wanted to make sure I controlled the ball and finished it," he added.

=> " Ruud confident going into the final straight "

Ruud van Nistelrooy says the title race is wide open as United and Arsenal charge into the final straight.

Wednesday´s 2-2 draw means the championship charge will go right down to the wire.

But the Reds striker is confident the Premiership pendulum has swung ever so slightly in United’s favour.

”We know there are four games to go and that the title race is wide open,” Ruud said. “We’ve got tough games, but so have Arsenal. We just have to concentrate on ourselves. We haven’t lost this year and we want to continue that run until the end of the season.”

Van Nistelrooy, who topped his 36-goal haul last term with his 37th of the season at Highbury, is confident the momentum is with United.

He said: “We scored four against Liverpool, six against Newcastle and two against Arsenal away from home, we can build on that for our next games.”

Asked whether he would have taken a 2-2 draw before the game, Ruud said: “It’s hard to say. I don’t think you want to take a result before the game because you have to see how the match goes.”

Ruud also took time to praise his United team-mates for their resilience at Highbury to turn around a 2-1 deficit.

”We kept calm and played our game, even when we were 2-1 down, and we managed to get a goal back almost straight away. As a team we were fantastic, we worked very hard to get a result here,” Ruud added.

”We came away with a point which was good considering we were 2-1 down. We got a result here which is what we wanted.”

You´ve got no Sol - Arsenal 2 Man Utd 2
Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson remain neck-and-neck in the title race - and at each other´s throats over Sol Campbell. Arsenal defender Campbell sparked a bust-up after being sent off for elbowing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seven minutes from time. He will be banned from the final FOUR matches of the season - including the FA Cup final against Southampton on May 17. Manchester United chief Ferguson blasted: " I am getting concerned about elbows. Someone will get seriously hurt. It is happening too often."

Talk about cocky. No, not Arsene Wenger - Alex Ferguson. Manchester United emerged from a pulsating night in North London with a point and Fergie´s body language made it appear they had earned the vital edge in the title race. Wenger has predicted for months that his Arsenal side will win the Premiership. But, as the full-time whistle blew, Ferguson ran on to the pitch, pumped both fists at the travelling fans, then turned and thrust his right hand in triumph at the directors´ box.

Wenger quit threat
Arsene Wenger could end up quitting Arsenal over their stadium fiasco. The Gunners boss signed a four-year contract in December 2001 after plans were unveiled for a new £150million home. But workers are now set to down tools on the 60,000-capacity ground at Ashburton Grove because of a cash crisis - and there is no chance of the club moving in by 2005. Last season´s Double winners admit they do not know where the money will come from to finish the job. But it could cost them a lot more unless the board dig deep to bankroll their dreams of challenging Europe´s elite. And it is not just Frenchman Wenger who will consider

Wenger rage as campbell is banned from title run-in and final
Arsene Wenger slammed Sol Campbell´s sending off as Arsenal´s title hopes were dealt a huge blow last night in the titanic Premiership clash at Highbury. The match ended all square and the championship race is still finely balanced, but Wenger was left fuming as Patrick Vieira limped off with a recurrence of his knee injury and Campbell was shown a straight red for elbowing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 83rd minute.
Sports staff, Daily Mirror

Knee gives Wenger´s title hopes the elbow
The goals settled nothing. But the knee and the elbow may prove decisive. Sir Alex Ferguson certainly thinks so and the clenched-fist salute the United boss gave to the travelling fans and the directors´ box at the final whistle was one of celebration. Understandably so, at the end of the night which may have tilted the balance more dramatically towards Old Trafford than the scoreline could ever suggest. In normal circumstances, a draw to keep the championship in their own hands after losing Patrick Vieira would have been good enough for the Gunners, even if Ryan Giggs snatched an undeserved triumph from Arsenal´s grasp.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Curses, it´s Fergie´s
When it comes to mind games, one thing stops play. Last night, the sight of Arsene Wenger´s head exploding on the Highbury touchline left Sir Alex Ferguson as triumphant as the man with two brains. Forget the fact that this tempestuous draw left Manchester United and Arsenal in exactly the same positions as they were yesterday morning. You only needed to study the agonies that contorted Wenger´s face and the joy that creased Ferguson´s features to know which way the title appears to be heading now. Ferguson pushed every psychological button known to man in the closing stages of this clash and kept on going after the final whistle.

Henry blocks direct Ruud to title glory
The manner in which Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated the final whistle last night suggested the balance of power had already shifted back towards Old Trafford. Manchester United´s manager embarked on an extraordinary journey across the Highbury turf at the end of this epic contest, congratulating the referee, then his players, before marching towards the Clock End and shaking his fists defiantly at the visiting fans.
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

After a nght like this, how could Ferguson think of selling Giggs?
When Manchester United do their housekeeping at the end of this momentous season, they must re-examine their plans for Ryan Giggs, the player most likely to fee the needs of a plc seeking to balance the books. While the debate rages about whether David Beckham, with his massive commercial earning strength, can be allowed to leave, there has been assumption that Giggs would be on his way to Italy and to Roma.
Steve Curry, Daily Mail

It’s going right down to the wire
Phew what a scorcher, and that was well after the sun had gloriously slipped behind Highbury’s West Stand. A sweltering afternoon in north London was followed by a white-hot night, as these two giants of English football produced a match which lived up to all the hype but failed to decide the championship race.
Rob Shepherd, Daily Express

Fergie is up to his old tricks
Back in the old mean city of Glasgow, they used to love a turf war. Sir Alex Ferguson, belligerent, bombastic, brilliant son of the Clyde, just can’t give up the habit. Has there been a more extraordinary sight in all of the title race than the act of this throbbing night of drama, right across the Arsenal homeland of the Highbury pitch.
