MICHAEL BALLACK

Bayern slight United

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has hinted that Michael Ballack would be foolish to join Manchester United.

Ballack is carefully weighing up his future at the Allianz Arena as he has just 12 months remaining on his contract.

The Germany international has been offered an extension by Bayern which Rummenigge has urged the midfielder to sign.

But Premiership giants United have been strongly linked with an offer for the 28-year-old, who was recently crowned Germany´s Player of the Year.

Though United have yet to discuss Ballack with Bayern, Rummenigge feels the player would be making a mistake in moving to Old Trafford.

Rummenigge claims Ballack would be joining a team on the wane if he was to accept the overtures from The Red Devils.

" [They are] not the Manchester of before," Rummenigge told Sport-Bild magazine.

" If I were a player, I would laugh about it."

Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer has followed Rummenigge in encouraging Ballack to commit his future to his current club.

Beckenbauer told Bild: " Ballack has all the trump cards in his hand. I would seize the chance now and not wait too long.

" Who knows what will happen in a year? Perhaps you get an injury and cannot play in the World Cup that everyone´s watching."

Meanwhile, Ballack´s agent Michael Becker has dismissed claims that the midfielder already has a gentlemen´s agreement with United.

Reports have suggested that Ballack has agreed to join The Red Devils on a free transfer next summer but this has been refuted by Becker.

" Michael Ballack is facing the most important decision of his career," Becker told SID sports agency.

" Why would he prematurely sign in England if we haven´t even spoken with the Italians and Spanish?"

Wrexham 1 - 3 Man Utd

Equipe : Steele; Bardsley, Pique, Heinze, P Neville; Heath, Kleberson, Miller, Jones; Rossi, Cooper.
Remplaçants : Richardson, T. Lee , Picken, Campbell, Gibson, Fox, McShane.

RICH REJECTS ALBION SWITCH

Kieran Richardson has spurned the chance to re-join West Brom in favour of staying and fighting for his place at Manchester United.

Manager Bryan Robson was keen to lure him back to The Baggies following the 21-year-old´s successful stint at The Hawthorns last season.

However, Richardson, although flattered, has decided to remain at Old Trafford and help The Red Devils win the Premiership title.

Richardson proved a key signing on loan for Robson last term when his goals not only helped keep Wes Brom up, but also landed him a place on England´s end of season tour of the United States.

" Everyone wanted to know whether I was going back to West Brom or not but I have decided to stay at Manchester United," explained Richardson.

" It was flattering to have the choice. I did well at West Brom and I enjoyed my time there.

" I owe Bryan Robson a lot because he took a gamble on me when I didn´t have a great deal of experience.

" I know he wanted me to go back but I want to make it at Manchester United and be a Manchester United player. Hopefully I can do that this season."

>> Kieran ne partira pas en pret finalement.

For sale
Michael Owen had a ´For Sale´ notice officially hung round his neck by Real Madrid last night as the Spanish giants demanded £16million for the England strike ace. Despite a clear statement of intent from Newcastle manager Graeme Souness, Owen´s agent Tony Stephens is understood to be scheduled to hold talks with Manchester United over the next 48 hours in a bid to set up a move to Old Trafford. A Real insider said last night: " The decision has been made and the fee has been set. Now it is up to other clubs to come to us." The England line leader is keen on linking up with Wayne Rooney under Sir Alex Ferguson, and moving back to his home in Cheshire.

Rush backs Owen to join United
Liverpool legend Ian Rush has told striker Michael Owen: Join Manchester United. Rush insists Real Madrid ace Owen should ignore the bitter rivalry between United and Liverpool. And he must not let his Anfield past stop him making the move. He said: “I had the chance to join United while I was at Juventus. Liverpool wanted me back too, so it was an easy decision — but if they didn’t I’d have gone to Old Trafford. Michael needs to make the right decision for his career.”
Staff reporter, The Sun

O´Leary poised to move for Saha
David O´Leary is hoping Michael Owen will move to Manchester United and free up Louis Saha for a switch to Aston Villa. The Villa boss fears he could be left short up front after Everton emerged as serious rivals in his bid to sign Milan Baros from Liverpool. Saha would be his next choice, but the manager knows he has little chance of landing the Frenchman unless he becomes surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. And O´Leary is monitoring the situation with Real Madrid and England striker Owen, who has been linked with a move to United after dropping down to fifth choice at the Bernabeu.

Fergie satisfied with squad

Sir Alex Ferguson claims he is happy with his squad despite suggestions that Manchester United are pondering another move in the transfer market before the August 31 deadline.

The United boss has only signed veteran keeper Edwin van der Sar and PSV Eindhoven´s Park Ji-sung but has been linked with moves for Real Madrid´s Michael Owen and Bayern Munich schemer Michael Ballack.

With the UEFA Champions League qualifier on the horizon, and The Red Devils will find out their opponents on Wednesday night, Ferguson has other matters on his mind as he travels to Antwerp for the friendly against United´s feeder club.

" So far it´s been pretty good," he said of the pre-season campaign. " The most important thing is to get through it with a full body of men.

" So far, fingers crossed, we´ve been okay.

" We´ve had one or two little niggles. Louis [Saha] got a little knock on the knee in the last game but, other than that, we´re in good shape."

Ferguson is pleased with the relationship with Royal Antwerp and satisfied with his squad as captain Roy Keane travelled with the party.

" We´ve got a smashing squad," he told Sky Sports News. " I´m pretty happy.

" It´s been a very useful for us. It´s a great relationship with us.

" Of course, it´s their 75th anniversary so it´s a good reason to go there and recognise our involvement with them."

As regards the Champions League tie next week, which will probably be against Debrecen, he admitted: " It´s the price you pay for coming third."

Meanwhile, Irish defender Paul McShane has been linked with a loan move to Brighton.

Football: Michael Ballack reste au Bayern Munich
mer 03 aou, 20h32

Antwerp 1 - 6 Man Utd

Everton in for Neville

Everton are lining up a £3.5 million move for Manchester United´s Phil Neville.

The versatile England international missed the trip to Antwerp after captaining a shadow side in Tuesday´s friendly win at Wrexham.

Sir Alex Ferguson may be willing to cash in on the 28-year-old in order to raise funds for another reinforcement to his squad.

" It´s probably been very difficult all the way through this summer to actually get the players in we´ve wanted," admitted Everton assistant manager Alan Irvine to Sky Sports News.

" I don´t just think it´s been at this club, I think it´s been at a lot of clubs.

" We hope we will get other players in, if not for this particular deadline [August 4 for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers] then before the August [31] deadline.

The Toffees will face competition for Neville but it is understood that talks have already taken place between the two clubs. Middlesbrough and Wigan are also rumoured to be keen on landing a player who made 12 Premiership starts last term.

Milan Baros remains another target for David Moyes but Irvine concedes a deal is far from done for the Liverpool hit-man.

" There´s an interest but how serious that is [I don´t know]," he affirmed.

" We are not anywhere near concluding a deal as far as that is concerned."

UNITED AGREE BRAZILIAN DEAL

Brazilian side Fluminense have revealed they have entered into a partnership with Manchester United.

The Red Devils have accords with several clubs across the globe and Fluminense have now been added to the list.

The agreement will see Fluminense send some of their most promising young players to England to train with the Premiership giants.

Fluminense reached the deal with United during the recent Youth Under-15 World Cup which was staged in Europe.

United were impressed by Fluminense starlets Rafael and Arthur and both are heading to Old Trafford for trials later this month.

Rafael is a right back, while Arthur is a central defender, and both will be put under the gaze of Sir Alex Ferguson and his coaching staff.

The duo will be accompanied on their trip to England by United´s South American representative and will look to demonstrate their potential to the club.

Everton have agreed a deal for Manchester United´s Phil Neville.
The versatile star will undergo a medical before joining David Moyes´ side in a reported £3.5m move.

Moyes has endured a summer of mounting frustration in the transfer market, but has now turned to the 28-year-old former England player.

Neville, who is able to play in defence or midfield, has won 52 England caps but started only 12 games for United last season.

Moyes has missed out on Scott Parker and Emre to Newcastle, while a succession of other moves have failed to materialise.

Everton have until midnight on Thursday to sign players in time for the Champions League clash against Villarreal at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

:d) Bonne chance à Phil.
