Smith ready for deep role

Alan Smith has confirmed that he is ready to take on a midfield role next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed earlier this week that he was keen on trying Smith in a holding midfield role and could even see him as a long-term replacement for skipper Roy Keane.

Smith starred in a pre-season friendly at Peterborough United and now he is set to take on more of a deeper role, as opposed to his usual forward one - despite the fact it could hamper his World Cup aspirations.

" Everybody has to realise Alan Smith getting to the World Cup comes second to Manchester United trying to win The Premiership," he said.

" The manager feels I can play in that position and it is something I enjoy because I am always involved in the game.

" As a centre-forward, sometimes you can get quite isolated and frustrated but sometimes I do have to remind myself to get back when an attack breaks down. And if I forget, I can usually rely on Rio Ferdinand to remind me."

Manchester UnitedCristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he will pen his new contract with Manchester United next week.

The 20-year-old Portuguese star has been in talks for a number of months, but now a new deal is in place.

" Everything is sorted out and hopefully, I will sign next week," said Ronaldo.

" I am very happy at United and believe I can achieve everything I want here.

" There is no reason for me to go anywhere else.

" I have improved as a player since I have been here and I will get even better.

" I am already looking forward to next season when we all aim to put the disappointments of last season behind us.

" We are all determined to get the title back."

Premiership clubs on Owen alert

Arsenal and Manchester United may move for Michael Owen after his Real Madrid future was threatened by the signings of Robinho and Julio Baptista.
Owen looks to be on his way out of The Bernabeu after only one season after the Spanish giants confirmed deals for Robinho and Baptista.

The 25-year-old England striker had a successful first season and Real, but spent many games on the bench.

And he is unlikely to accept a further drop down the pecking order.

Arsenal may be tempted to move for Owen after seeing Baptista taken from under their noses by Real after coming close to sealing a £14m move.

And United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-time admirer of Owen and has been linked with him throughout the summer.

Liverpool may also be alerted by the possible availability of their former striker, although it is understood manager Rafael Benitez does not want Owen and has just spent £7m on Peter Crouch.

Owen has stressed he is happy at Real, but he may now accept he has to move with the World Cup looming in Germany next summer.

Urawa Red Diamonds 0-2 Man Utd

Wayne Rooney scored his first goals of Manchester United´s Far East tour to beat Urawa in their final match.
After a tired first-half performance, United took the lead just five minutes after the interval when Rooney threaded a low shot under Ryota Tsuzuki.

Soon after, Rooney scored a sublime second, dribbling past three players before lofting a delicate chip over Tsuzuki from the edge of the area.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a second-half penalty appeal turned down.

Manchester United ended their pre-season tour of Asia with a convincing 2-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds.

A second half brace from Wayne Rooney gave United victory in Saitama, Japan on Saturday, as The Red Devils bounced back from Thursday´s defeat to Kashima Antlers.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson left striker Ruud van Nistelrooy out of the match, while centre back Rio Ferdinand was on the substitutes´ bench.

Giuseppe Rossi came in for the big Dutch striker, while Gerard Pique replaced Ferdinand in United´s backline.

Dawning their new blue away kit in front of a sold-out crowd at the Saitama Stadium, United applied most of the early pressure on their hosts.

Kieran Richardson looked dangerous coming forward from his left back position, but Urawa´s backline looked solid and well organised.

Darren Fletcher had a goal disallowed after Louis Saha was ruled offside in United´s build-up, while Wayne Rooney made claims for a penalty after being obstructed following a run into Urawa´s box.

United´s best chance of the half came after Gary Neville´s dangerous from the right forced Urawa goalkeeper Ryota Tsuzuki to punch away, as Darren Fletcher looked set to connect with a goal-bound header.

Following a scrappy period of play, Urawa striker Yuichiro Nagai took a fine through on the edge of the box before forcing United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar into a save at the near post from his angled right foot shot.

Nagai then squandered another opportunity with a mis-hit volley that went into the arms of van der Sar from close range, while Tadaaki Hirakawa sailed a shot high over United´s bar from distance.

The half ended with Rooney trying his luck with a speculative right foot strike that drifted wide of goal.

The second half started with Ferguson introducing Cristiano Ronaldo and Dong Fangzhuo for Saha and Rossi, as United soon made their pressure tell with an opening goal.

Scholes took a pass from Richardson before slipping a through ball to Rooney in Urawa´s box.

The England man got a fortunate bounce of the ball to elude both Hideki Uchidate and Satoshi Horinouchi before powerfully finishing right footed past Urawa´s substitute goalkeeper Norihiro Yamagishi for 1-0.

The former Everton starlet then showed the immense talent he possesses when he eluded three Urawa defenders on the edge of the home side´s box before striking a sublime chip over Yamagishi for his second goal of the match minutes later.

The Japanese J-League club offered little in reply after half time, with Brazilian midfielder Robson Ponte going close with a free kick that went just wide of goal.

In the end, United finished their Far East tour on a high note and Rooney underlined his tremendous ability with his brace.

Je pense que maintenant on a un bonne effectif, je minquietais un peu au sujet des milieux defensif mais maintenant que Smith peut s´y placer, ca devrait aller. Il me manque plus que la venue de Obi Mikel pour que je sois completement satisfait.
