Ballack hopes fading
BAYERN Munich have confirmed that Manchester United have not made an offer for Germany captain Michael Ballack.

Speculation has linked the attacking midfielder, whose current deal expires next summer, with a move to Old Trafford, but both club and player insist he is going nowhere.

Ballack said: " I´m certain I´ll be playing for Bayern until 2006. We´re aiming high, and I want to be a part of it."

Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness confirmed that the Barclays Premiership club " had not tabled an offer" and that talks had started on a new contract.

The Munich giants are " hoping to secure the player for the long term," according to Hoeness, while chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge slapped a `not for sale´ tag on Ballack.

" These are the facts: Michael Ballack has a contract until June 30, 2006 - at the earliest. We won´t be letting him go before then under any circumstances," said Rummenigge.

Chairman of Bayern´s supervisory board, Franz Beckenbauer, is another person keen to keep the former Bayer Leverkusen man, but hinted Ballack might look elsewhere.

" We would be really glad if he would stay here," Beckenbauer said.

" We would go up to our limits, but we know that his following contract would be his last big one. It is his right to get the best contract."

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of his desire to bring in an experienced midfielder.

However, in the last two pre-season games Alan Smith has been employed in a defensive midfield role.

Ferguson told The Sun: " Alan has a lot of potential and he is still only 24. But in time he could become a replacement for Roy.

" We keep talking about another Roy Keane, but you are not going to get another Roy Keane.

" Alan is a differnet type of character, but it´s something we are looking at."

si BAllack ne vient pas c´est laid car le mileu de terrain a besoin d´être renforcé défensivement.Il faudrait un joueur avec bcp d´expérience car Roy, même si est toujours charismatique n´a plus cette agressivité et présence physique d´avant.Dès lors je ne vois pas qui pourrait on signer d´autre sachant que le budget est limité(même si les Glazer prétendent le contraire, jsuqu´à maintenant aucune grosse signature).Quant à Alan Smith, je ne l´ai pas encore vu jouer en milieu défensif mais c´est vrai qu´il a cette détermination et envie qui pourrait faire la différence.

Smith n´est pas un joueur defensif alors le mettre à ce poste c´est loin d´etre une assurance tous risques et c´est pareil pour Ballack, il joue plus milieu offensif au bayern et en selection que defensif.

ce qui m´inquiéte énormément c´est la méfforme de keano.

et dérriére on a personne de chez personne. en cas de meforme de giggs on a parks. pour scholes on a fletcher. et pour keane personne mais vraiment personne . ..

arsenal a vendu vieira. ils se sont vraiment affaibli et ne le remplacerons pas comme ca . ..

mais chelsea sera encore plus for. essien ira c´est quasi certains. swp y est. sans un autre millieu défensif ne révons pas on en les concurencera pas. méforme de keano qui est en nette baisse depuis 2 ans ou blessure et c´est l´écroulement du chateau de carte MU . .

en plus nje ne vois pas de solution . pas de ballack , pas d´essien qu´on va se faire piquer comme d´hab , pas de diarra , pas de gattuso . ..

franchement le millieu défensif est en panne a mU . .

Chelsea plus fort je sais pas...SWP va leur permettre d´avoir un vrai spécialiste à ce poste, et même chose avec Del Horno ( même s´ils avaient Bridge avant sa blessure). Mais à côté de ça leur attaque s´est bien réduite: Drogba; Crespo, Gudjonhsen. Faut voir...

En ce qui concerne MU, la solution peut venir d´un jeune comme Jones, ou éventuellement d´un réveil de Miller. Pas qu´ils s´imposent, mais au moins permettent à Keane de jouer moins et plus se préserver par exemple. Richardson et Fortune préférent jouer dans l´axe, donc il y a deja pas mal de monde.

Fergie: Saha bids ´stupid´

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United would be foolish to loan striker Louis Saha out for a season.

A number of clubs have enquired about the former Fulham forward but there would be little worth in United agreeing to send the 26-year-old away for a campaign.

The Red Devils boss, who could be without Cristiano Ronaldo for the entire Far East tour, has no intention of off-loading Saha.

" There is no chance of Louis Saha going," he told The Manchester Evening News.

" All these clubs are asking about a loan for him but that is absolutely ridiculous.

" They must think we are stupid.

" You just want him to be fit. His career here has been fragmented because of injury but, if he stays fit, you can add another 15 goals easily to our tally."

Everton, Newcastle United, Fulham and Lyon have all been interested in acquiring the United striker.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, missed the flight to Hong Kong because his father has been taken ill.

It is being speculated that the Portugal winger will be excused making the trip altogether despite initial suggestions that he would travel out on Friday.

Alex: Rossi has Lineker touch

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Giuseppe Rossi´s goal in the 2-0 win against Hong Kong was reminiscent of Gary Lineker in his prime.

The Manchester United manager clearly believes Rossi is an out-and-out goalscorer and is enthusiastic about the potential of last season´s top marksman in the reserves.

" It was a typical goalscorer´s goal," he told MUTV. " It bounced off his belly, I think, but he was there to meet it.

" A lot of goalscorers in the game score goals like that; you think of Gary Lineker, that type of player. He´s got great potential, the boy."

The other goalscorer, Dong Fangzhuo, drew praise from the manager as did Alan Smith and Edwin van der Sar.

" We´ve had him [Dong] for a couple of years now, he´s been at Antwerp, as you know, but we hope he develops and progresses," stated Ferguson.

" The important thing will be if we can get him into the country with a work permit. You´ve seen today, as we´ve known for a while, he´s a very useful player with good potential; he´s strong with a good head on him and it was a well-taken goal.

" I thought Smith was superb today; he created great spirit within the team, kept encouraging players and cajoling them. In essence, it was a very good performance. I am going to do that [play him in midfield throughout the tour].

" Van der Sar made a good save. He did well and his encouragement and experience at the back is proving very important."

Ferguson was satisfied with the overall performance in Hong Kong´s National Stadium.

" I think it was useful," he added. " We played some fantastic football in the first half, but it was like a replay of the cup final with the chances we missed.

" We had a lot of chances. We didn´t play as good football in the second half but it was nice to win it.

" We´ll change the team around a little bit as we can only use six substitutes in Beijing."
