Bayern : finalement Ballack reste

Smith can replace Keane
Sir Alex Ferguson has finally accepted that Alan Smith could be viewed as a full-time midfield option, and even a possible replacement for ageing captain Roy Keane.
The tigerish former Leeds United striker arrived from Elland Road last summer with Ferguson insisting Manchester United only wanted to consider him as an out-and-out forward.
Smith started the season brightly when handed the responsibility of leading the line but faded from the picture in the latter stages of the campaign and did not even get off the bench during the FA Cup final with Arsenal.
The England international played the second half of the 6-0 friendly romp against Peterborough United wearing the number four shirt and played in a holding midfield role behind Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
Within seconds of his introduction, Smith added an element of aggression to the proceedings and his performance had Ferguson purring afterwards as United scored all six goals after the break.
" We see a lot of potential for him too," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. " He´s only 24.
" He´s young and obviously it´s something we´re possibly looking at in terms of maybe the replacement for Roy eventually. We keep talking about it.
" You don´t get Roy Keanes obviously but Alan Smith is Alan Smith and he brings a different type of character than Roy."
With Giuseppe Rossi pressing hard to join in-form Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha in the striking slots, the logical solution for Ferguson would be to withdraw Smith to midfield, particularly if he is unsuccessful in any attempt to land Bayern Munich´s Michael Ballack.
Cantona in Glazer attack
Eric Cantona has launched an attack on Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer.
The Frenchman has no time for the American following his controversial buy-out of the Old Trafford club.
" The only thing I can say is that I hope United will not lose the strong identity and philosophy of this club," he told Sky Sports News.
" I will be very sad if they lose it; they are so strong, stronger than him.
" United is not Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich. They don´t need one man. United is stronger than anybody in the world.
" Glazer, you ask me what I think about Glazer. I say to you what I think about him.
" I don´t care about him. I don´t need him. I need nobody."
Cantona achieved legendary status during his stint at United and is still worshipped by the Red Devils faithful.
Agent: Rio won´t quit
Rio Ferdinand´s agent insists there is no danger of the England star quitting Manchester United.
Ferdinand and United have reached an impasse over a new contract, which has led to sections of the Red Devils faithful booing the central defender during pre-season.
Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill have both backed Ferdinand in recent days, insisting he has done nothing wrong.
Pini Zahavi has now confirmed that Ferdinand is not looking to quit the club, despite recent reports of interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid.
" Rio will be playing for United in this coming season - there is absolutely no doubt about that," said Zahavi.
" He has said he wants to stay and I know for sure that United do not want to sell him."
However, Zahavi did confirm that that talks on Ferdinand deal were yet to reopen.
" There are no new negotiations going on at the moment but there is no need to panic," he added.
" When United come back to us we will talk again, although I don´t know when that will be."
Ferdinand currently has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.
Keane: Young Guns Must Be Ready To Fire
Roy Keane may be set to miss Manchester United´s Far East tour but he has still warned the club´s youngsters of the standards he expects. Keane, tipped by Ferguson this week to be a future manager, has underlined the determination at Old Trafford to make a flying start to the season - and that means getting into good habits in the warm-up matches. He said: " Pre-season tours are a time for the younger players to make their mark. In the game we played against AC Milan on the US tour last year, we gave the ball away in the last minute and they scored an equaliser. I came in the dressing room and there were players relaxed. That really annoyed me. You have to drill it home to these lads that it´s all about winning. We were disappointed with last season, and must start well this time."

Kleberson Move
United misfit Kleberson could find his escape route from Old Trafford closed after Celta Vigo switched their attention to fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva last night. Celta´s interest in the £4m midfielder cooled when they were alerted that Racing Santander´s Silva would be a free transfer on a lower salary.

United Sign Foster
United yesterday completed the signing of goalkeeper Ben Foster from Stoke, who have received an initial £1m which could rise to £3m depending on various clauses. Foster, 22, did not make a first-team appearance for City but made a big impression at youth and reserve level.

Fergie: Smith Can Replace Keane
Sir Alex Ferguson admits Alan Smith is a viable option to replace Roy Keane in centre midfield.
The firebrand Yorkshireman, accustomed to leading the line upfront, has starred in the middle of the park in pre-season friendlies against Clyde and Peterborough.
And Ferguson told Sky Sports: " Alan´s young and obviously it´s something we´re possibly looking at in terms of maybe the replacement for Roy eventually. We keep talking about it.
" You don´t get Roy Keanes obviously but Alan Smith is Alan Smith and he brings a different type of character than Roy."
" We see a lot of potential for him too. He´s only 24."
Fergie´s admission comes after Edwin van der Sar had told ManUtd.com that Smith had revelled in his new midfield role in training.
The Dutch goalkeeper said: " Alan has impressed me. He´s focusing himself on a different position and he´s doing a really good job on that."
Another youngster to catch the eye pre-season has been Giuseppe Rossi.
The Italian-born striker scored with a scorching left-footed drive against Peterborough, and Sir Alex sees a great future for him.
Ferguson said: " He´s a good, young player. He is only 18 and he has a great future I hope.
" He is a fantastic finisher and his performances in the reserves tell you that. Hopefully he will get even better.
" But he´s a striker and it will get more difficult, because it is hard to make it in that position."
Report by Steve Bartram.
