Rio sympathy for Cole

Rio Ferdinand has sympathised with Ashley Cole following the massive fine levied out to the Arsenal defender by the Premier League.

Cole was handed a £100,000 penalty while Chelsea and their boss Jose Mourinho were also fined for their parts in the tapping-up saga.

Ferdinand admits he could have found himself in a similar situation in the past and felt for Cole.

" Definitely, in the past situations have arisen like that but without the same outcome," he told Sky Sports News.

" But what can you do, I am not going to go into Ashley´s case, I am sure he can defend himself and he will want to speak out himself at one point and everyone´s ears will be listening out for that.

" I think it´s a massive fine to be honest, but I don´t know much about the actual case. I don´t like to comment on other peoples´ situations.

" Ashley is a friend and I know he´ll be quite upset, but he will deal with it in the best way he can. I don´t know if he´ll appeal but I am sure he will do what´s best for Ashley Cole."

Ferdinand confirmed that talks are still ongoing over his contract.

" I am still negotiating, it is something between me and United to discuss," he added.

" We are still negotiating and there is nothing more I can say on the matter."

The England defender also confirmed that United staff were not allowed to talk about the fans´ prospective breakaway club they would like to form.

" I have heard of that, but it is not for me to go into," he said.

" I´m not going to breach rules as we as players aren´t allowed to speak about it."

:d) Fergie Eyeing Valencia Pair

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

Spanish sources claim Manchester United are ready to join the race to try and prise Vicente Guillem Rodriguez and Pablo Aimar away from Valencia. Sir Alex Ferguson believes they can help bring the major trophies back to Old Trafford.

Liverpool have had a long-standing interest in the Valencia pair, but now United could try to beat their Premiership rivals to them.

Valencia are not looking to sell them, but they are not completely shutting the door on any prospective deals that the English suitors may put to them.

Spanish newspapers reports claim they are is unhappy and that they´re considering they´re Mestalla futures. With this in mind, a number of Valencia based sources are claiming United have already offered £20 Million for the couple.

Si c´est vrai tout ça, on peut s´attendre à un depart de Kieran ce qui serait quand meme dommage vu ses performences actuelles. Pour Aimar, je suis pas convaincu, on ne joue pas avec un 10 à MU.

Rio feels at home
Rio Ferdinand has given the strongest hint yet that he is staying at Manchester United by commiting himself to major renovation work on his £1.5m Cheshire home. The £29million England defender has come in for criticism from United fans after failing to sign a new contract and holding out for a deal worth £100,000-a-week. But the 26-year-old is inching closer to agreeing a new three-year extension with a new salary of around £90,000 a week which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2010. And the revelation that Ferdinand has submitted detailed planning applications to Cheshire County Council for significant rebuilding work to his mansion all but confirms he is staying.

Wenger and Fergie chase £2m Niemi
Arsenal and Manchester United were on alert last night after Southampton put Antti Niemi up for sale at a cut-price £2m. Niemi, 32, has been told he can leave St Mary´s as boss Harry Redknapp attempts to rebuild following relegation from the Premiership. Arsenal, just like United, have been scouring Europe in their desperation for a new No 1.

Park interest intensifies
Manchester United´s interest in South Korea World Cup midfielder Park Si-Jung intensified last night when the player´s agent told them that the 24-year-old is ready to move to Old Trafford. With one year left on his PSV Eindhoven contract, the Dutch club could be forced to sell this summer.
Staff reporter, Daily Mail

>> Niemi, meme pour 2M£, ça me parait pas etre une super solution pas plus que Robinson, si on doit y mettre 10M£. Il doit y avoir d´autres bons gardiens à prendre, on peut d´ailleurs retenter Casillas puisque on etait pret à casser la tirelire pour Buffon.

" Man U boss in summit with Glazers"

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

Denis Campbell, sports news correspondent
Sunday June 5, 2005
The Observer

Manchester United´s new owners will this week finally reveal their business plans for the club at a summit with the chief executive David Gill that could lead to his departure from Old Trafford.
Gill is travelling to Florida for two days of meetings with two sons of Malcolm Glazer, the American entrepreneur who last month bought the world´s biggest football club in a £790 million takeover.

Sources in the Glazer camp confirmed that the talks in Tampa would cover every aspect of the club´s future, which is likely to see United adopt a more aggressive commercial strategy in order to pay off the £540m in loans they borrowed to gain control.

Analysts say Gill will stay in his £900,000-a-year job if he is convinced that the Glazer family´s plans to turn United into an even more lucrative sports business are viable. He is due to hold discussions with Joel and Avi Glazer, who will now run the club.
Gill´s first encounter with his new bosses since they gained control will be tense. He warned publicly before the takeover that the Glazers´ plans were ´potentially damaging´ to the club because of the high level of debt involved.

Although the Glazers have pledged to work with United´s existing on and off-field management, associates admit that changes to the club´s senior personnel are possible. Gill, 47, is highly respected in football but he may have irritated the Glazers by trying to stop them gaining control.

Sir Roy Gardner, the United chairman, and his two fellow non-executive directors are due to step down after the offer period to shareholders to accept or reject the Glazers´ £3-a-share proposal ends on 13 June.

If Gill follows them, he is thought unlikely to seek another job in football, as he would see any other club as a step down from United. An accountant who joined United as finance director in 1997 from First Choice Holidays, he is certain to receive offers from the City if he leaves. He is already a director of a hotel company.

Subjects under discussion are likely to include the position of the manager Sir Alex Ferguson, kit sponsor Nike´s threat to pull out of its 13-year £303m deal and Chelsea´s new-found supremacy.

JI-SUNG´S A WALK IN THE PARK
By Alan Nixon

MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their efforts to sign highly-rated PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ji-Sung Park.

The 24-year-old South Korean international impressed United boss Sir Alex Ferguson in this season´s Champions League, helping Guus Hiddink´s side reach the semi-finals.

Park is valued at £3million, but United may have to pay more as he is hugely popular in Asia and therefore a massive commercial asset.

United chief executive David Gill will fly out to Holland this weekend hoping to finalise a deal.

Gill is confident he can land Park as he has just one year left on his PSV contract. He is currently on World Cup duty with South Korea.

However, if a price can be agreed he will fly back to England for United´s Far East pre-season tour.

The fact that United previously signed PSV stars Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam in controversial circumstances has spiced up negotiations.

Relations between United and the Dutch club were also strained by Arjen Robben´s visit to Manchester last year before a fee was agreed.

Man Utd agree fee for Van der Sar

Van der Sar made more than 150 appearances for Fulham
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Fulham over the signing of Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for an undisclosed fee.
The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year deal and will undergo a medical after returning from international duty.

The 34-year-old moved to Fulham from Juventus for £5m in August 2001, and made 153 appearances for the Cottagers.

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper after releasing Roy Carroll at the end of May.

Van der Sar had been linked with a move to United in January but agreed a contract extension with Fulham until summer 2006 instead.

The Dutchman is United´s first new signing since the club´s takeover by Malcolm Glazer and he is likely to join the squad for July´s tour of the Far East.

He will become the latest in a long line of keepers to have been tried by manager Sir Alex Ferguson since the loss of Peter Schmeichel in 1999.

Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez and Carroll have all come and gone while Ricardo´s contract expires this summer.

United´s other keeper, American Tim Howard, agreed a new contract until 2009 in May.
