Reds Tasked With Winning Third European Cup Title

It is imperative Manchester United win the Champions League next season in order to re-establish their status as one of the leading clubs in world football.

By the time of next season´s European Cup final in Paris, it will be seven years since Sir Alex Ferguson´s side claimed a dramatic victory over Bayern Munich in Barcelona.

Former Reds midfielder Mickey Thomas says lifting the European Cup for a third time in the United´s history would set a benchmark for Ferguson’s next United team.

" The club are desperately trying to win that trophy again," Thomas told MUTV. " It was disappointing United went out so early in this season’s competition. But it was to the team I think were the best in the competition - AC Milan.

" When you look at players like Rooney, Ronaldo and Fletcher, they are still learning the game. But you want to try and win the European Cup as soon as possible."

Ferguson believes a club of United’s stature should be on tales of AC Milan and Real Madrid, who have won the tournament seven and nine times respectively.

" You don´t want to go to a great length of time without winning it," adds Thomas, reflecting on the six years that have elapsed since United last lifted the trophy.

" The manager will want to win the trophy again, and only when it is back in the trophy cabinet will everyone be happy.

" Liverpool won the Champions League this year, which United fans would have been very disappointed by. But the club has to move on.

" There is always next year and, hopefully with one or two additions to the squad in the summer, Manchester United can win the European Cup again."

United have much to put right and everything to prove next season after a disappointing 2004/05 campaign. And, although Thomas says United must covet the European Cup with even greater endeavour next term, the Premiership title, which the Reds have not lifted in two years, must remain a high priority.

" Chelsea are so strong and they´ll probably sign 100 players in the summer," he joked. " They will be well-equipped to win the title again. Arsenal will be there and Liverpool, having won the Champions League, will have money to strengthen their squad.

" It will be tough to win the league next season, but United showed a few times last season - particularly against Arsenal - just how good they can be.

" The future looks promising," he adds. " There is the nucleus of a very good squad here. If Sir Alex can tinker with the squad over the summer, next season may see United bring the Premiership back to Old Trafford where it belongs."

United Park bid confirmed

Park Ji-sung´s agent Chiel Dekker has confirmed Manchester United are trying to sign the PSV Eindhoven wide man, leaving the South Korean with a difficult decision.

Although happy in Holland and having huge respect for coach Guus Hiddink, the midfielder has already admitted he would consider leaving Eindhoven if the right offer came along.

A switch to Old Trafford would be difficult to resist although the two clubs have yet to discuss any transfer fee for Park, who has been offered a new contract with the Dutch Double winners.

" Of course he wanted to extend his deal," explained Dekker to De Telegraaf.

" But, when a club such as Manchester United approaches you, it will make you doubt.

" Such clubs will not come along every day."

Park is preparing for the World Cup qualifier with Uzbekistan and is to consult Hiddink, who was his international coach at the last World Cup, before deciding on his future.

" He has much respect for Hiddink," explained Dekker.

" It is not said that he has already chosen for Manchester United.

" But this move is a fantastic chance."

The former Kyoto Purple star will decide within the next week or so, with Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly convinced to try and sign the player after witnessing his performances against Milan in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

The midfield man can play on either flank but operates mostly on the right for PSV.

>> ça se confirme pour Park.

Ruud targets United stay

Ruud van Nistelrooy has shot down speculation that suggested he wants to leave Manchester United.

Some mischevious tabloid reports claimed the Dutch striker told Sir Alex Ferguson he was keen to quit Old Trafford after a disappointing season, with a sensational swap deal with Michael Owen of Real Madrid in the pipeline.

However, the former PSV Eindhoven attacker has moved to quash the rumours.

" There is no question I want to stay," emphasised van Nistelrooy.

" I´m committed to United and that is where I want to be and where I will be.

" It´s the most important thing for me.

" For me, it was a season of injuries. I only played 27 games but I scored 16 goals and, if you look at it like that, it´s not too bad.

" But at clubs like United you are pushed to do an impossible number of games and, for a player, it is becoming physically impossible without rest.

" Overall, it wasn´t my best season and everyone knows that. I know that myself.

" I was rushed back too quickly and now I am struggling and it is a bit of a disappointment."

Van Nistelrooy is due to feature in Holland´s double-header with Romania and Finland but is already looking ahead to next Premiership campaign.

" Next season will be different," he warned. " Especially with the squad we have."

Rennes : Offre de Manchester Utd pour Isaksson
03 juin 2005 - 13 h 02 -
