Eriksson joy at Richardson debut
Sven-Goran Eriksson hailed Manchester United youngster Kieran Richardson´s " fantastic" two-goal debut after England´s friendly win against the USA.
The 20-year-old, who ended the season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, was the hero of England´s 2-1 victory.
Eriksson said: " For a young player to score twice and play like he did is fantastic. The free-kick was a great goal and he did very well for us.
" We have been criticised for coming here, but this was very useful."
England coach Eriksson added: " Our young players showed a lot of talent out there. To come to America with such a young side, play good football and win is fantastic for us.
" I have seen Kieran Richardson myself three or four times this season. He has done well and the reports we have had back from the scouts have also said the same sort of thing.
" He is a big talent who has done well at West Brom. I would not say that this has secured his World Cup ticket but he is one of those pressing their claims."
The ankle injury to Sol Campbell was because of the pitch. They are not used to playing on such hard pitches
Sven-Goran Eriksson
Debut hero Richardson said: " To score in the first four minutes is just unbelieveable. It´s such an honour to play for your country, and to score is great.
" I was a bit nervous before the game, but when I scored it settled me right down."
Richardson was substituted after half-time and revealed: " I felt a little twinge in my hamstring, so we will see how it settles down.
" It hasn´t quite sunk in yet, but maybe it will when I get home and see the reaction of people."
Eriksson was concerned about a rock-hard surface at Soldier Field in Chicago and he said: " The ankle injury to Sol Campbell was because of the pitch. They are not used to playing on such hard pitches."
Joe Cole said: " We played well in the first half then in the second half we picked up a few injuries and it seemed the travelling caught up with us a bit. But it was a good backs-to-the-wall performance.
" It´s welcome to have good competition at this level. Now you have the likes of myself, Stewart Downing and Kieran Richardson staking a claim to the place giving the boss a good problem to have which he has not had for a few years.
" I did OK. I felt quite tired at the end but I will be ready for Colombia. We need to keep the victories going. We need to go out and win. We know the importance of playing for your country.
" Winning is a habit - you can´t turn it on and off. We need to take it the winning form into the World Cup qualifiers."
USA coach Bruce Arena also paid tribute Richardson as he said: " He had a quiet game except he scored two goals.
" He took a great free kick. I could use a ´quiet´ player like that on my team."

Manchester United defender John O´Shea is a shock target for Premiership rivals Liverpool. ( The People)
Wes Brown - 6: A bit rash at times and looked less than assured in suspect and ever-changing backline.
Kieran Richardson - 9: Dream debut as he scored a curling 20-yard free-kick and added a second with a well-struck shot in a lively match.
Alan Smith - 6: Hustled and harried in typically aggressive fashion but lacked the cutting edge to turn his effort into goals.
Phil Neville ( Replaced Richardson, 59 minutes) - 6: His versatility came in useful when he switched to left-back for Cole.
O´SHEA IS ALL SET FOR KOP SWITCH May 29 2005
By Andy Dunn And Alan Nixon
JOHN O´SHEA is a shock target for Liverpool.
Even though he started the FA Cup Final, the £6million-rated Manchester United defender is finding it increasingly difficult to hold down a regular starting place at Old Trafford.
And his task is likely to get tougher this season as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to introduce outstanding young centre-halves Jonathan Spector and Gerard Pique into the first team.
Republic of Ireland international O´Shea has played mainly at full-back recently, but has always preferred a central role.
But that position is over-staffed at United with Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre all preferred - and the two youngsters in the reserves straining at the leash.
And O´Shea might be forced to concede that his best career path might be outside Old Trafford.
That has alerted European champions Liverpool who, despite their stunning success in Istanbul last week, are desperate for reinforcements at centre-half. Sami Hyypia is feeling the strain and Mauricio Pellegrino was a disastrous signing. And Rafael Benitez knows Jamie Carragher cannot go on shouldering an enormous burden and that he has to recruit in that area. Moves from Old Trafford to Anfield are rare, but that will not discourage Benitez.
And all of a sudden, Liverpool has become a far more attractive destination for players wanting to further their career.
Ferguson likes O´Shea, but believes Spector and Pique are outstanding prospects.
His priority remains a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and a solution to United´s goalscoring problems. And that is why he might be willing to offload some of his defensive riches.
BARCELONA and Real Madrid are ready to test Ruud van Nistelrooy´s resolve to stay at United.
The Spanish giants have been tipped off that the Dutchman is unsettled and both are considering big offers.

MANCHESTER United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton will watch Roma´s Gianluca Curci today as Sir Alex Ferguson steps up his search for a new No.1.
Coton will watch Roma´s final Serie A game of the season against Chievo following some excellent scouting reports.
United´s only concern is that the 19-year-old lacks the experience to handle the Premiership - and if Coton´s opinion is not favourable the Reds will turn to Shakhtar Donetsk´s Jan Lastuvka.
Ferguson has already enquired about the man who is understudy to Chelsea´s Petr Cech in the Czech Republic squad and has been told the asking price is £3million.
United officials denied last night that new owner Malcolm Glazer´s son Joel met Ferguson at the training ground on Wednesday. There have been claims from club insiders that Glazer Jnr made a secret flying visit.
KAMENI MOVE A GIVEN May 29 2005
MANCHESTER UNITED have added Cameroon international Carlos Kameni to their list of goalkeeping targets in case a move for Shay Given fails.
Kameni has impressed at Spanish club Espanyol this season and is available for £4million.

From Ananova:
Manchester United have been warned by major sponsors Nike that a continued lack of success could cost them dear.
The sportswear manufacturers began a 13-year kit deal with the Red Devils in August 2002 worth up to £303million to the Old Trafford club.
However, it is reported that a get-out clause will allow Nike to decide in July next year whether to continue that agreement past the 2007-08 season.
And vice-president of sports marketing Ian Todd has admitted his company will be monitoring United´s progress following their failure to win a trophy last season.
Todd told The Sunday Telegraph: " We don´t know what is going to happen next year. All options are open.
" Chelsea won the league this year, Arsenal won the FA Cup and Liverpool won the Champions League. So you could argue that Manchester United is only the fourth-best club in England at the moment.
" If, for example, Manchester United failed to qualify for the Champions League next season, that might be a problem. We will look very carefully at this situation, as we do with all our sponsorship agreements."

A leading analyst has tried to allay fears that Manchester United under Malcolm Glazer are heading for a financial meltdown similar to Leeds.
The Yorkshire club´s debts spiralled to £103m, leading to a fire sale of players and eventual relegation from the Premiership.
Glazer´s formal offer document displayed a succession of steepling interest charges taking the approximate overall cost of a £265m loan to a massive £570m.
On top of his loan, the owner of NFL gridiron franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers has to pay back a bridging loan of £18.9m by March next year and another £90m as a credit and capital expenditure facility.
There is also another £275m in preferred securities - and fans are horrified at the scale of the debt and fear for the club´s future.
However Hilary Cook, investment analyst at Barclays Stockbrokers, believes Glazer will look to reschedule the debt over the next 12 months, once he is in full control of the club.
" Before he got full control he wasn´t able to borrow very efficiently," she said.
" He did not have that much security to borrow against because until he had control of the company he could not borrow against the assets.
" He has got expensive debt because it is short-term. What you would expect him to do now is reschedule the debt at lower rates over the next year or so to reduce his interest payments.
" Debt is quite normal - it is just that Manchester United have been a company that were run without debt.
" Glazer will be aware of the potential downside of borrowing so much and must have a convincing business plan or people would not have loaned him the money."
She added: " It is all about interest cover in the City.
" What you have to make sure is you have cushion between your trading profits and the costs that go with servicing your debt.
" Football revenues are volatile. You might be in Europe or the Premiership one year but not the next.
" The problem with Leeds was their costs of borrowing were greater than their profits.
" It is not in Glazer´s interests to put so much expensive debt in that they cannot afford to trade any more.
" Glazer has other assets he will be able to borrow against if need be.
" The most important thing is that you don´t want to be looking over your shoulder and saying ´do we have to sell a player because we have run out of money´.
" It is in his interests that Manchester United remain a global brand. So he is not going to be running the club down."
