Essien still unsure

Lyon ace Michael Essien remains unclear about his future after being named France´s Players´ Player of the Year.

Essien fended off competition from Lyon team-mate Juninho for the accolade, which was won last season by Didier Drogba.

Ghana international Essien has been linked with Drogba´s current club Chelsea after establishing himself as one of the pre-eminent midfielders in Europe.

Chelsea have already failed with a bid for the powerful Essien, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also firm admirers of the 22-year-old.

French champions Lyon are anxious to retain Essien´s services for next season while the player would be happy to stay at Stade Gerland.

He is due for talks on his future at the end of the season and concedes he is still unsure if he will be on the move over the summer.

" I can´t say anything, I don´t know yet," commented Essien on his future.

Essien did acknowledge his delight at being crowned the Player of the Year but feels Juninho was also deserving of the prize.

He added: " I am really very happy. It is a beautiful reward at the end of a beautiful season.

" But I also think about Juninho. He is a very great player that also deserved the trophy. It is a shame that both of us could not have won it.

" Since I have been in France I have always seen forwards rewarded so I am happy that this time a defensive midfielder has won the trophy."

Lyon´s outgoing boss Paul Le Guen was Coach of the Year, with Gregory Coupet claiming the goalkeeping prize.

There were also seven Lyon players named in the Team of the Year, while Nantes midfielder Jeremy Toulalan was selected as the next great hope of Ligue 1.

Barca reject Rio claims

Barcelona have told skysports.com that claims linking them with a bid for Rio Ferdinand in the summer are simply not true.

The Catalan giants have been linked with a big money swoop for the classy England stopper, as coach Frank Rijkaard looks to improve his defensive ranks.

United chief Sir Alex Ferguson would be loath to lose his lynchpin but in any case, Barca have now issued a statement to deny that they are interested.

Club director Txiki Beguiristain has confirmed that Rijkaard´s summer wish list does not contain the name of Ferdinand.

´´Barcelona do not normally comment on speculation published in the papers,´´ Beguiristain told skysports.com.

´´But on this occasion I will say that we´re not interested in Rio Ferdinand.

´´Our objectives for next season are in different places.´´

Barca have already added Dutchman Mark van Bommel to a squad which captured the Primera title last week - but it is expected further faces will be brought to the Camp Nou this summer.

Glazer reveals United debt

Malcolm Glazer´s formal offer document for Manchester United has revealed that massive interest rates will increase the huge debt at the club.

The opposition to Glazer´s takeover from United´s fans has focused on the amount of debt that he will run up in buying a controlling stake in the club.

The 76-year-old is due to take the club into private ownership next month but he will run up huge debts in buying The Red Devils.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Glazer has already said he will be borrowing £265 million from bankers JP Morgan, but the interest charges being revealed in his document mean that the cost of that single loan will run up to a huge amount of £570 million.

The full details of the amount of debt involved will send a shiver through the United fans, as estimates say the debt at Old Trafford will run up to £650 million, six times that which almost brought down Leeds United.

Glazer´s £275 million loan has been divided into four parts, £55 million, two lots of £62.5
million and £85 million, with repayments taking between seven and 10 years at a rate between 2.75% and 6.5% above base rate.

Although the base rate is low - around two percent - the premiums are still huge and impossible to pay back without a massive increase in present profits.

Although shareholders´ reaction to the document will not change the outcome, with Glazer having already taken a 72.6 percent stake, it will only serve to increase the fear amongst United´s fans.

The repayment figures that have been worked out for the £275 million loan from JP Morgan secured against Manchester United are:

£55 million - payable over seven years at 2.75% above LIBOR ( London InterBank Offered Rate). Repayment cost - £90 million.

£62.5 million - 50% payable over seven years, six months, 50% payable over eight years at 3.25% above LIBOR. Repayment cost - £110 million.

£62.5 million - 50% payable over eight years, six months, 50% payable over nine years at 3.75% above LIBOR. Repayment cost - £128 million.

£85 million - payable by April 2015 at 6.5% above LIBOR. Repayment cost - £242 million.

Carroll set to stay after United U-turn
Roy Carroll is staying at Manchester United after being reassured by Sir Alex Ferguson he has shelved plans to buy a No1 goalkeeper this summer. Carroll has stalled on signing a three-year deal since Christmas because he did not want to play second fiddle to a new keeper. But with United balking at Tottenham´s £8m asking price for Paul Robinson, and Chelsea refusing to allow Carlo Cudicini to move to Old Trafford, Ferguson has told Carroll he will again battle with Tim Howard next season to be No1. His agent, Francis Martin, said last night: " Roy has received certain assurances and David Gill said he would get back to us after the FA Cup Final, so we´re expecting to sort this out before Roy goes on holiday at the end of the week. We just need to clear up the finer points."

Carroll poised to agree new deal

Manchester United´s Northern Ireland international keeper Roy Carroll looks set to sign a three-year deal after it had appeared that he would leave.
He has been at United for four seasons but has faced a challenge from Tim Howard for a place in the starting XI.

But the 27-year-old is now expected to stay and Howard has signed until 2009.

" He´s spoken with the manager Sir Alex Ferguson and been given certain assurances," Carroll´s manager Francis Martin told the Daily Star.
